If he had even read that post FAST made, he would've been apologetic even. I have to admit, after reading that post, I realized just how complicated it is, even though I understood most if not all of what was being said.

Actually, some of FAST's guide was a bit complicated to comprehend. Going to romhacking.net and learning from there then going back to the guide makes it easier to understand.

Back on topic: The links and information provided to you, OP, will help you. If you don't want to learn from them, then you don't want to romhack/translate anything.

I wouldn't attempt this project if u don't understand Japanese. google will create a literal translation. for example, a Japanese sentence may translate to: "I broke my arm"; however, if u look up the word for broke (ie: bone), the dictionary would say fracture. does "I fractured my arm" make sense in English? that's what will happen with google. u might be able to make sense of it but there will be thousands of sentences with the same problem.

help? in what ways are you helping? if you really are experienced why dont you teach me how to rom hack yourself as i stated in my first post? i want someone to "teach" me. i'm only giving an attitude because people did not read and think they're all that just because they can redirect me to another site. and you said i dont want to learn? if i dont want to then why take my time posting a thread like this. i would've gave up, i did hours of searching. even if there is no easy way out i'm only asking for a clarification for the guides that look complicated and not "noob" friendly.

and i said i wish to use google translate to get me a better idea of whats the scene is going on, even if the words are gibberish i can compare that "gibberish" to the scene that is shows the text. common sense can be used here. maybe some of you can't but i believe i can.

i'm using google translate for a reason, as i do not know much japanese words i can use google translate to translate them to english, even if they are gibberish, they can be reworded to match the scene. use of common sense to compare what was translated to get a better image of that it actually meant to say.

You think you can reword gibberish into something that makes sense? Did you even stop to consider that maybe what google translate spurts out isn`t even close to what is being said? If you`re going to reword things to match the scene, you might as well not even bother translating and make up your own story.

What`s that? The first phrase isn`t even translated? The second phrase is translated with the exact opposite meaning?

And do you even know enough Japanese to distinguish when a conjugation of a ?-verb would be in the potential form or passive form?


You better pray to the plethora of divine entities out there that the game has kanji for specific words. And you better hope that everyone speaks standard Japanese. You also better hope that everyone in the game speaks in polite form, as opposed to slang.

Except that the above is a GREAT example of why you WILL NOT get 'a (better) image of what the "gave dev" is trying to say'.

You don't (just) get broken English when machine translating, you get incorrect translations and missing meanings.
You lose all forms of subtlety and nuance that comes with natural speaking (in this case, writing) of a language.

If I'm not mistaken, Google does a better (more accurate) job than Babel Fish.
But either way ANY machine translation is not going to give you a good result for more than a few words.

Yeah we can talk/argue about machine translating and how its basically pointless, but have we forgotten that first he has to actually decode the text files in order to even try to attempt to "copy" and "paste" translate? But seeing how this thread is going and his attitude toward our responses, I don't think he is going to get any help..

I think if someone wants to do a "perfect" translation and wants to understand the translatable language better, then he/she should take a dictionary and with patience step by step learn the basics of the language!

Note, that it took me many years the understand and spell them right, and I'm not saying that everybody needs to do the same... I'm just saying that if you want to start a translation of a game/program/anything, you at last need to know the very basics of the language you're trying to translate, for example spelling and stuff!
Don't relay on a translator, because it won't give you all the time good results!

so you're trying to tell me that reading the whole thing in another language that i dont understand will give me a better image of what the game dev is trying to say rather than translating it to english with google translator? interesting.

a "better" image does not mean an "exact" image.

like anyone was going to decode them for me in the first place, btw my attitude is imaginary. you guys just think i'm trying to give an attitude but in reality i'm just stating what you guys miss read. and somehow this turned into an argument about google translations and again all of you miss read that i said i did not mind the english in being gibberish.

You dumped the files form the rom right?
You see that nice directory thing thats going on? some files are graphics some are just instructions...

unfortunately this game has compression. I havn't decompressed these yet - but they are my bet as to where the text is - the arm9.bin and the overlay files. (not sure though as there is quite a few files compressed)
If I were you I would look up lz decompressors and then decompress those files. then open them up with EMeditor which has a detect function (file - reload - detect all)
which will tell you (hopefully the right encoding) I am pretty sure though that its sjis. The one and only font that has japanese characters in it in this game shows that. (the fontdata.bin has a subfile system in it with 7 files).
Use a ocr software dump the images to text and use those characters to search.

graphically some images that you will need to translate are in the console_bg_data.bin file (again anther file that has files in it. gba 4bpp 256 by 192 objH1234 to kinda see them.
Dang CT2 (what I was using to look through the rom) just crashed as I was exploring. sigh.

Anyways I tried and the compression is stoping me from finding any useful text for me to point you to.
So, try to decompress the files (not with dsbuff - dsbuff does not do that). search for the lz decompressors or use CT2's inbuilt compressor/decompressor then look through the files I mentioned.
Need more help p.m me okay. Seeing as this thread did not go where you intended it.

i'm using gibberish as an exaggerated phrase for whatever that may come out with the google translate. saying gibberish in my case will mean whatever that comes out i will not care as long as its done. so i dont know why you made your way to search through the dictionary.

sigh since you were the first one to reply and actually explain the first step for how to translate roms, i thought you were pretty decent, but i guess i was wrong.
