Might just be that the DSTT doesn't work in recovery mode. For what it's worth though, neither does the CycloDS, so borrowing a Cyclo to do the recovery won't be any help.

I thought it does now.

Also, can you brick of you pop a stick with foil in the right hole, and ('accidentally') go wrong, so it shuts off. Without flashme flashings process?

You mean can you brick if you lose power when you AREN'T flashing you ds? no. its just like turning off your ds...the only reason it bricks when flashing is because its modifying the firmware, and if you lose power while thats happening, you're screwed.
