Kogorasumaru - can you do something else than abusing people? Ok, people like Keigo screwed up but that's not the reason to suggest they bed their own mothers. Also I wouldn't say that asking for a partial translation means somebody is stupid, I could even tell that saying "nobody cares..." when actually more people asked about releasing a partial translation than not doing it, and even DevNoName considers it as a mean to advertise the project, is stupid on your part. So keep some internet etiquete and don't act like a douchebag. With regards 00713.
Excuse me... But what you said makes no sense.

Of course the voice of those who rushed the patch were louder. It's what you guys do, ask and beg on each post!

And what we would do, anyway? Ask the translators (the real ones) to ignore you and others, and take the time needed to finish the (true) translation? If so, I'm doing it now. (Better late than never.)

Translators and reviewers. Please, ignore these guys. For the sake of the project!

Eeeee, how does it make no sense? Count people telling "no beta" and people telling " a beta would be good". Plus, DevNoName stated they actually consider doing it to promote their work so more people will know about the project once it's complete. Plus, releasing a beta translation doesn't mean that the project will end with it and that it'll be the final effect of entire project. Apparently your logic doesn't work today as it should be...

Plus, releasing a beta translation doesn't mean that the project will end with it and that it'll be the final effect of entire project.

There are various factors related to that though. Even if your project isn't finished yet, once it's public on the net, other people will make use or potentially exploit it in some way, whether they have your consent or not. Take a very early leaked version for example, that still has a load of issues, including a crashing issue early in the game. There will inevitably be people who take such content and upload it as a draw to their site. Often they remove all identifying info (such as that it's not a finished work), and just designate it as "<GAME NAME> FULL ENGLISH DOWNLOAD XXX" .

People will download it and run into the crash, untranslated text, or very poorly translated text that reflects poorly on the project, and write their opinions or actual reviews about it. And possibly come back here to complain about various flaws they noticed, or spread negativity about the project . And all that is about a version that wasn't even supposed to be public.

I've been following this issue as it's somewhat interesting. For those that think they're helping by using machine translations, nothing could be further from the truth. Japanese isn't a language that works well with conventional machine translations, a big issue is the prevalent lack of pronouns. Without them, it's hard to get a coherent script, and the translator needs a decent grasp on the language to understand what is being said, in order to translate the material.
As many lines in Japanese are often about inferring things, since passive tenses are common, or sentences are cut off, words are omitted, slang, and so on. None of that is transferred in a machine translation.

In short, even if you clean up and rephrase a machine translated script, it wouldn't even come close to the meaning of the original, and before that, it would already be a huge pain in the ass and take a skilled writer, just to get a coherent dialog out of it.
Of course it all depends on how high your standards are, and what you find acceptable. Personally I refuse anything that was machine translated for above reasons, but perhaps others find it acceptable to have a coherent sounding script that isn't too truthful to the original.
But at any rate, by using a machine translation, you're not helping, you're only making things harder for actual translators. So even if you think you're being helpful and it took you a lot of effort to do so, in the end it does more harm than good.

@devnoname120 and all the others working on the project , i have a suggestion .
why not select some trust worthy guys as beta testers to test the translation and tell you about any flaws ? wouldn't it make the progress a bit faster ?

I tend to just read stuff on this site but yeah made an account and id like to put an opinion into the matter in front of us.
I'm going to put up info on other release so that maybe a decision from the translators can be made:
I've watched many translation projects go through the steps and their releases are somewhat different for every one
-The monster hunter portable 3rd had their release as a whole piece and slowly patched on updates as time went on (patches was one click away)
-The Final fantasy Type-0 released as a single full complete edition (fans waited long but outcome was worth it)
-The .hack//link project has released small updates every so often so that they can get feedback on their work (it's been going on for years though and patching is pretty time consuming for each re patching because there wasn't any one click patching tools made for it)

I personally like the idea of of how monster hunter and .hack did it. but a full creation is pretty great as well. Maybe a half patch may get settled because we know that at least half is correct and reviewed and by the time a tester is done that half they can give feedback on it and most likely the other half may be completed by then; if you are a casual gamer and not a rusher that is.

@Weyu - well, there's an easy way out I guess - in some points of the game drop info like "WARNING: Beta Translation" - throw it in some menus etc. so nobody can miss it. This way everybody will be warned that it's beta and only a total moron will miss it, but morons are morons and haters gonna hate, so no reason to care.

@Radwan126 - if translators will go for it I'm a volunteer - I may be new to this site (I actually came here when I completed my first run of God Eater: Burst, realized GE2 is japanese-only and started research for a translation) so the "trustworthy" part may be hard to identify, but my english is pretty good as I'm reading much books and many of them, like Game of Thrones or Patricia Briggs series about Mercedes Thompson are simply released in Poland much later, so I used enough english media to make it impossible for me not to become good with the language :)

Well i my self would love to be a tester too xD and by "trustworthy" i meant people who have time and know how to spot flaws...etc
i waited for years to be able to play GE:2 i mean i really loved the story, the characters, and everything about the game ! and i have been a fan since GE:B was released in the west

hi everyone. thankfully i wasn't the only one that noticed the issue about using machine translations. while we do all have differing opinions on this, as someone who did a couple of translations there, i'd say yes it is not easy to translate this game. & those machine translations just... hurts my eyes when i see them. :|

i happened to fix a few ones i came across with. & they're not something you can spot on a screen like this

i didn't even knew about it until i came across a couple of them on the unfinished ones. personally, i want to play this game with a proper english translation. some might be okay with a half-baked one with proper translations on equipment or what have you but there are also those in the same boat as me. of course the decision lies on how devnoname120 & coldbird wants to go with this buuuuut i'm on the side who wants a proper translation.

i'm not really gonna bash on those who think getting a half-baked version released is okay because there ARE people who are ok with playing with that release as long as they understand the essential stuff in the game (like weapons, mats & stuff). if we can release that kind of version, then i'm good with it too. i'd even play it myself. haha. buuut let's think both ways. i think everyone is just as eager to play as anyone else. the sooner the better right? lol. translating ain't an easy feat, & we know how google translate works & i don't really think it's all that different with the other machine translators.

lol tl;dr. but the point is there are people who wants an early "playable" release while there are also those who wants a polished release. why don't just try to meet halfway & let the real translators do their thing. an early incomplete release is not really impossible to do. but jacking in machine translations just creates more unnecessary work for those who review it. i think it would be best to just leave it alone instead of using machine translators to hasten (quite ironically) the process.

It's sad, i mean we're supposed to be happy because everything is 100% but when you know that most of them are machine translators ... your heart just breaks T-T

Machine translation didn't just happen last week. You had someone translated like this half a year ago and most of the lines are marked as reviewed. (The page showed the translator but not the reviewer. At least I hope Transifex allows you to sort translated lines by translators and maybe allow you to delete them.)

(The pic below is even funnier, especially the last line. I really wonder if there are people who can tolerate translation like this.)

I wish whoever seriously involved with the project good luck.

@Radwan126 Why people create girl characters? I personally don't know, but I'm one of the players that has his usual "set of characters" - I usually play most games that allow for character creation with two characters - one is named "Marek", after me, usually is a warrior/rogue type of character (aka high burst damage, dots (damage over time effects), heavy weapons in shooting games etc., chaotic good + a female character, Hysteriae (or sometimes Maniae) that is a rogue/mage (focusing on long range combat, spells, elemental damage, stealth etc, sniper rifles in modern weaponry games, lawful evil) etc. And if somebody asks "Why the hell did you described it?" my answer stands - because most people I know do something similar.

But I think this is a discussion for different thread so you can open it and post a link here if you want :)

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60
