first of all, im on some linux distro based on arch. and im lazy. yeah i dont know either how those two compaginate, but they are factors

so, some weeks ago, my n3ds xl met a terrible fate. i used it almost exclusively to play boi rebirth, and i ended up installing boi afterbirth+ on my laptop to play it again. but it crashed, consistently, everytime i picked up the "glitter bombs" item. always, no matter what. i looked on the internet, and there were other ppl with this problem, and exactly zero solutions or even real theories about why. i ignored it and went on with my life without picking it

days after that, i kinda forgot, and got the item again. picked it up. it didnt crash. i didnt know why, but it didnt crash. again, i went on with my life without really thinking much of it

while i was messing around just now, i think i finally discovered the reason behind the crashes

i tried to pick the item up. crashed. "not again". restarted the game. crashed. "ugh, what have i done recently?"

that one library

i downgraded re2 and booted the game again. picked up the glitter bombs. flawless, crashless.

specifically, i used the command sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/re2-1\:20201001-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst because i still had the package on cache from upgrading/downgrading it from time to time because of reasons. you may need to get it somewhere else, the version 20201001 is the one that works for me. i also think it reduces crashes in general a ton, but i havent really paid that much attention so that may be just a lie, idk

i dont think this is going to get a ton of visibility, but it is the best i can do, since this is the only place on the internet i have an account right now lol. if someone has this problem, tries this solution, and it works for them, it would be cool if someone managed to make a better version of this post and put it somewhere with more visibility

also btw im not even sure which wine version i am using right now but i think its the default one, not lutris not steam not any other

@SylverReZ, I dislike the kind of drm where you have to play single player games online all the time bc of some verification bs

@Xdqwerty, Don't use games that have Easy Anti-Cheat as its been exploited many times.

@SylverReZ, my PC can't run most AAA games so i wont

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

@SylverReZ, i think they have been doing that since late 2000s

Either that or their old games were unfinished aswell but we can't notice it

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol

I never knew about it at the time but a fixed version was available but you had to mail in your broken copy lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So that version is semi rare
