I haven't really played any square games extensively except Chrono Trigger and Einhander. Aside from that, I've dabbled a little in some of the Final Fantasy games, but that's it. So the "Square sucks!" rants are kinda lost on me, simply because I've played so few of their games.

But honestly, if it was the exact same game with a new 3D graphics engine and voice acting and cutscenes, I would be happy.
