Hardware Exchanging thermal paste?

Don't use pads, use liquid metal paste. My silver paste keeps mine from thermal throttling in Zelda. Docked or handheld modes be damned.

Liquid metal is only ideal if your console stays docked as moving it around may cause it to leak and damage components

Mine is spread super thin, and is quite thick. I recently cleaned out my Switch's vents, and there's still no sign of it leaking out. (You really barely need *any*) I take my Switch to work and back in my lunch bag, and nothing yet. Just cool temps. My fan rarely even kicks on anymore compared to how it used to be.

I personally think cooling the ram will have no benefit since it is not downclocking due to temps. I only do thermal paste and copper shim removal on any switch I do. The few I did for myself and friends of mine use Carbonaut thermal pads for the CPU so they are paste free and will not dry out over time.

Agreed. I think I’ll stick with removing the shim and repasting, along with adding pads.

I recently did this...took everything apart cleaned up the old paste...Used MX4 and Heat Pads switch runs very cool now..Well worth doing but only if your competent.

Even that is not ideal as it's positioned vertically and liquid metal likes to seep over time from gravity.

Hey so I did a repaste twice with new mx-4, and my temps are like 32-33c at idle. Playing Diablo I get 47c and the fan is around 25-28%.

I was expecting lower temps.

I did remove the copper shim, but I'm thinking it should be there...

Maybe I should go to a thermal pad?
What did you guy use on the heatpipe to emi cover? Thermal paste or pad?

Hmm. Wondering what I should do? Too much paste? I heard you really can't go too much as it'll just squish out

Idle at home screen...it should be thin but not too thin and I would not really recommend liquid metal for console.

Hey fella.

I use the spread thin method and covered the whole of the die then I spread a think load over the copper heat pipe. I then used 2 heat pads on the metal shielding by the die which also gets hot during load.

See uploaded picture marked in black is where I spread the paste and attached the heat pads.

Thanks. So you did remove the copper shim? I put thermal pads on the ram chips and on the ram chip shield as well.

Yep I did indeed remove the copper shim you have to. If you want my opinion and its just my opinion because I build laptops, servers and pc's and Macs as a job remove the heat pads off the ram chips and just put them on the shields.

Ok will do when I get back in there. Maybe I went too thick on the thermal paste? And it's insulating the cpu too much?

I’m going to attempt the repasting later, but is the removal of the copper shim/sticker essential? I mean, why would Nintendo put it there if it wasn’t necessary? Also, how would you recommend I remove it safely?

if you have a look at my picture posted above...the copper pipe sits over the CPU die...where I have drawn the Black arrow...so to get to the die and apply the paste you have to remove the copper pipe.
