    Do you have a modchip?
If not, what cIOS are you using?

i have a soft modded wii, and my Cios is either version 13a or b (im not quite certain). I haven't updated it in a very long time, maybe thats part of the problem...

and i fixed error #002 by turning on the option in usb loader gx.

If you have 13a, you will have fixed 002 for all games, if it's 13b, you will get 002 related problems. Where do you get 001 error? In some "newer" title since Wii Sports Resort? If yes, you need to change your cIOS. Rev7, 14 and 17+ have a proper solution for 001 error(and for 002 as well == leave it to the loader).

im getting 001 on games like red steel 2 ,silent hill shattered memories, and fragile dreams. basically a lot of newer late 2009/early 2010 titles.

and i've been away from gaming for a while so i've forgotten a lot about Wii hacking, is there some kind of guide out there for updating my cios?

Couldn't be easier. Download this: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=07O5TMZ7
Extract zip file, rename cIOS38_rev17-Installer.dol to boot.dol, copy dol to a folder in your apps folder on your SD card (SD:\\apps\whatever\boot.dol), boot it through bannerbomb or the homebrew channel, choose ios 249 when it prompts, online installation and let it do its thing.
    Good luck dude
