Elden Ring tops Steam charts for concurrent players, user reviews drops to "mixed" after PC issues

Elden Ring is the hottest new game release in quite some time, becoming one of the most critically acclaimed games in recent history. You can see how successful the game is, going by the Steam peak players chart, where it shows Elden Ring having peaked today with a massive amount of 764,835 concurrent players just on PC. By comparison, previous From Software games like Dark Souls III and Sekiro have an all-time peak of 129,831 and 124,334 players respectively.

However, despite the critical reception, Elden Ring has sharply dropped from overwhelmingly positive user feedback to mixed, as of the time of writing. This is due to the PC port of the game having issues, frustrating players on the platform. Some posted reviews stating that while they have a powerful gaming PC, the game still stutters and can't hit a solid 60fps. There's a number of workarounds that users have found, including adding EldenRing.exe to high performance in Windows, or disabling the Steam Overlay. Digital Foundry noticed consistent stuttering in the game when in the open world area, and that variable refresh rate monitors help to make the gameplay a little smoother, but don't fully fix the problems.

While our own time with the game has been limited thus far, the stuttering bug is apparent in our review copy on Steam as well. Though Elden Ring is running on a 2080 Super and 3700X CPU, the game will drop down to 57 frames per second on a timely basis. Bandai Namco has not made any statements regarding the PC port's quality as of yet, or whether or not there will be a performance patch.

Update: Bandai Namco has addressed the problems and will be releasing a patch.

I don't speak for anyone else, but Elden Ring has a lot of graphical issues for me, namely:
  • Lighting causes the screen to be covered in varying amounts of rectangles with varying amounts of opacity (sometimes I can't see shit)
  • Certain areas (I think usually areas with a lot of reflections like water or metal) assault my eyes with flashing neon colors
  • Enemies can often be invisible at point blank
  • The horse also sometimes goes invisible while I'm riding it
  • The game has crashed without warning twice so far
I really hope that it's something I can actually fix, since my PC has not had a single issue running any other game to date (with the exception of heavily modded games, but that's expected)

It's a shitty optimization on their part. I swear their QA testers are nonexistent. Who are they trying to compete against, Ubisoft?

You're absolutely right, and I know exactly why I accidently said 8GB but I already feel dumb enough for the mix up so I'm not going to explain. LOLOL!!! I do however, actually have the 6GB version. :P

i'm not having fps problems, but my problem is that this game is very easy, they probably contracted some californians or some furry degenerates to work in the game.

Also this game is very different from other dark souls, who's saying the game is the same dont know anything.

8GB of furry porn?

Since you're not going to sleep very well until I tell you, lol, I had forgot which model I had and very briefly glanced at the Nvidia "System Information", saw the 8Gbps next to memory data rate, and my brain for whatever reason just processed what I was looking at incorrectly. I didn't think 8GB sounded right, but that's how it was processed in that brief moment. Brain fart. :)

I had the chance to get the collector's edition today for the ps5 or series x (probably would've bought the series x one, since I have no retail games for the system, all digital so far with discounts for being a gold member). however, I have close to no money right now. I don't know if the series x suffers this problem, but the op has a link to what's getting fixed, and I think it mentioned the ps5 version crashing causing loss of save data?

i have only one or two messages on these elden ring threads... unlike you with your keyboard and butthurtry, i mean this tells a lot lol. Is your furry tail plug not fitting well these days? lmao. What a loser.

btw the game is great, although very easy like i said, maybe that's why its 10/10, the journos could kill the first boss.

I've literally had none of these issues. Sounds like you need to update your graphics drivers.

Isn't it interesting how much social media algorithms have already influenced behaviour.

Imagine being so accustomed to the barrage of artificially selected negativity that it becomes uncomfortable to deal with something positive.
