CTurt Manages Kernel Exploit on PS4

cturt.png

Remember CTurt? The dev who managed to run unsigned code via the 1.76 Webkit exploit on PS4 a few months ago? Remember his cool Pong port to the Webkit exploit? And the Cinoop port?

Well, @CTurt has done it again, and has managed to get his PS4 Kernel exploit working! Using the 1.76 webkit exploit, he's managed to dump the PS4's kernel, and plans on looking for more vulnerabilities that'll work with the latest firmware!

This is excellent news, and definitely a big first step when it comes to current gen hacking! Congratz to CTurt!

EDIT 12/18: CTurt has announced he'll be stopping PS4 development, however he has posted a detailed explanation of how to get the kernel exploit working on 1.76 on his github

http://cturt.github.io/ps4-3.html

It's safe to say this isn't the last we'll see of this exploit, and now that he's published some details on how to get it working, I imagine we'll see something neat here soon.

I have ps4 with latest firmware, not angry about this. But for me its pointless to play homebrew or games, I dont want to get banned for a 399 euro console and dont care about back ups.

My friend had 3 launch PS4's. I got mine from him or hooking him up with a dual NAND 360, he uses one fully updated, and kept on NIB. More than likely, he'll have me do any end-user mods that may come from this. I still have yet to light my PS4 with a LED case mod. Until then have a gander at one of my best creations.

Oh man, already updated my PS4 months ago :/
Hopefully the exploit wasn't patched in later firmware versions...

we have to get things clear we still don't know whats possible with a kernel exploit we don't know if we would be able to bypass security and play ps4 games or it will just do nothing we care, we shouldnt get excited and buy a ps4, we have to wait, if a kernel exploits dosen't work we are really screwed up, ps3 was hacked becuase a small error sony had in their security same as xbox 360 so my advice is to wait

I'm not making the firmware by version list this time -_- someone else do it!

(I'm def gonna hunt around for one on the proper firmware tho ^.^)

Between Sony's awful hardware reliability for me, finding out the Xbox One's games acquired through Gold no longer stays with you even if the subscription lapses, and the WiiU's EULA update implying Nintendo could update me out of a vulnerable firmware willy-nilly, I am pretty much expecting to sit out this console generation, unless someone can perform a full-on, you-sunk-my-battleship level of jailbreak/exploit for it.

It's just not worth it to me anymore to deal with the limitations that these newer consoles want to instill on users. For all the tech that is being put in that should make them more capable than ever, we got lawyers and crap making them more gimped than ever before.

if its real Sony will stop supporting PS4 and start releasing PS5 on 2017 ahahaha :D
Actually, the way things are going, we'll be seeing a PS5 and Xbox Two soon enough, considering that AMD is already trying to tease them with new chips that supposedly get 5x the performance/watt that the current Jaguar chips in both consoles do. And none of the current gen consoles have anything that could even support a 4K display, let alone render in it.

I think it's funny that the news of a kernel exploit made the PS4 section of GBAtemp active all of a sudden. :yayps3:

Oh God you really think? Would probably be enough to drive the more frugal gamers completely out. I still feel burned that I spent all my money on black Friday for a PS4 just for them to come out with better (and cheaper) bundles a week later. It's hard to stay relevant.

It's not surprising that console makers pretty much start work on the next major hardware almost as soon as the new one releases so they can be prepared for the next generation.

But, much like with me on PC, Sony and Microsoft (and likely Nintendo as well) weren't prepared with 4K becoming a thing. Right now, NONE of the consoles can output a 4K signal, period. Let alone have hardware that could scale that high. And while so many cheap 4K displays are only 30Hz, you wouldn't want that for your actual display. But just like I wasn't expecting the Asus PB287Q, seeing 4K drop in price so aggressively is going to make it worth new buyers' time to get the 4K model, and thus want something that can feed it a proper signal.

Even the much overhyped PS4 can't even render a 1080p60 output internally. And none of the systems have HDMI 2.0 or displayport 1.2 to feed a 4K60hz signal.

I don't care about 4k. My pc supports 4k input and output, but I don't have a 4k TV or monitor to hook it up to, 1080p on TV looks fine, and whatever the HD 16:10 resolution is for vga monitors looks fine, too.
