Can you play backups on Xbox 360? Can it be modded?

I'm not familiar with the Xbox 360 but my brother has it and he wanted me to find out if you can mod it and have it play backups and iso's like how you can with the Wii. And if you can, is it done with a chip or can you do it through a hard drive? Thanks.

We have a 360 section where this very question was answered not but
1) Yes you can mod it.
2) Most people only flash the DVD drive with a hacked firmware. Only the later models of liteon (arrived middle/late last year) will need any soldering/fiddling with (still no need for a chip though)
3) If you only mod the DVD drive then you will need to use dual layer DVDs for all of them. If you get a JTAG hacked box then you can use the hard drive or a USB drive or a single layer disc.
