Setting what up? Name the distribution, version. If you know something about using computers setting up fedora or ubuntu should be straightforward.

Which Distro ya gonna use? Heres a few of them for some of the major distros, that covers the baseline part of the install. I'm assuming you'll have the CD ready.

Copy/print down everything you'll need, or use another computer with Internet access to view these pages

Ubuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall
By the way, each varient of ubuntu features these as the primary desktop environment.
Kubuntu=KDE4
Lubuntu=LXDE
Ubuntu=Unity
Xubuntu=XFCE4.8

Mint (Really suggest this one if you want an easy set-up process!)
http://www.techomag.com/linux-mint-11-its-...o-installation/
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=13252
Note: XFCE, Fluxbox and Debian editions are all based on Debian Testing (Currently Wheezy)

Debian
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/

OpenSuSE
http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Installation

Arch Linux (Do this one only if you're completely familiar with Linux and/or insane, and/or both like I am!)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Offici...x_Install_Guide

Gentoo (The weak hearted need not apply.....)
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml

Slackware (For those with absolutely no fear)
http://www.slackware.com/install/

Ubuntu: Major Release Versions
OpenSuSE: Major Release Versions
Mint (Non-Debian Based): Major Release Versions
Debian+Debian Mint: Rolling Release
Arch Linux: Rolling Release
Gentoo: IIRC Rolling Release

As for Eden Eternal being supported....no clue. Never played it before, never tried to install it through Wine or PlayOnLinux.

I prefer windows, mainly because that's what I've been using for the last 20 years. I tried Ubuntu recently, got so frustrated with the 'have to give yourself permission to do absolutely anything every time you try' that I nearly threw my computer at the wall. The fact that even if you are the admin of the machine and you still don't have automatic access to create a folder then copy a file to that created folder is absolutely insane to me.

What distro were you using?

EDIT: And Nimbus: Quit moaning. He simply said he preferred Windows. Clearly you don't. That's great. You don't have to rant about how secure it is. Spinal is a clever fellow, I'm sure he appreciates that it is being secure. However, some of us don't need that security.

Oooops im blind sorry.

nope its rated garbage :S
eden eternal

Figures...now Steam on the other hand...yeah that works.
But I would assume that no all games within Steam work? If I am wrong, I am rather impressed. I assume though that it is on a per-game basis whether they work or not.

i like and use more linux because well

1.it free all the future versions the updates (which are very often) are totally free
2.it boots fast like 10s for the ubuntu version ....even faster if you have a light-ware distro
3.its secure .........hell yeah.also it uses more resources to run, when you have windows a part of your memory will go to the antivirus running in background ,also not all antivirus are very effective and soon or later you will be infected
4.it has a nice software center like an appstore with lots of things free and now has some commercial games and apps too
5.it has a great community so troubleshooting made easy
6.no blue screen ....every one that has windows had one of this
7.you may learn something how the pc works
wink.gif

but it has some down sides the mostly are the software/games libraries that is a lot smaller than wind/mac :S
also some programs require that you compile the software yourself and if you are new to command line well it can get a little complicated but with time you will improve

and for a easy installing you should try ubuntu
smile.gif

EDIT: also as a downside id like to say

UNITY SUCK !!!
and it will be getting worse as in 11.10 the gnome classic will not be implemented

Gnome 3+G'Shell isn't as bad as I thought, you might wanna use that.

See my last desktop post in the "Post a pic of your desktop thread" to see what I mean.

Mine just did, you just have to use the command line sometimes.

Just installed Steam, .msi installer, installed without a hitch.

Not all exe or msi installers or executables work though.

Your argument is invalid. Except the part about wine's crappy loading...it does take a few seconds longer than it really should.

Really? Linux doesn't run Windows specific binary files? Shocker. On a side note, Linux doesn't care about file extensions I believe, and identifies files in a proper way, by the header of the file. Therefore you could name any type of file .exe or .msi and it should still open normally. So your argument is incorrect, because Linux CAN open .exe or .msi files, just not the ones you're thinking of. It should be Linux doesn't run Windows binaries.

Exactly, one of the best things about Linux is the fact that it can identify based on headers, rather than extention.

Hell, you can leave out the extensions, and it'll still identify it.

Eg: Trojan disguised as innocent jpg will show up as an executable in Linux.

In that example, on Windows it would open in an image viewer, due to the filename, so still not be effective - on Linux, if a n00b was using the computer they could actually run the malware, seeing as Linux would detect it as an exectuable. Bad example.

In Windows, it would only work if it DID have a .exe extension or whatever, but the icon used for JPGs in Windows, and some computer illiterate person tried to open it.

please dont speak about gnome3 i hate/love that
i love the fact that it looks great i hate the fact that.........everything else
its slow ,is buggy and for installing that you have to remove unity ..............if you install gnome3 and something goes wrong well without alt+f2 and then startx you are a dead man
well now i know about then ...back then when i installed gnome3 no.........
also im used to have like 3-4 panel widget like core-temp and close unresponsive apps ,in gnome/unity not
also not apps are implemented to work with unity ........
and ..........did i say that they are way slower than gnome classic ?
that why i hate them :S and im still with gnome 2 which im in true love

-Ability to put your user directory /home on another partition (Haven't been able to get anything like that in Windows in all the years I did use it)
..

Not wishing to distract from the discussion but http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310147 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310519

Huh....

Someone explain to me why I was never able to find that article, no matter how far I dug or looked for, back when I did use Windows? I looked forever, not once did I find anything on the subject.

I guess the question is, did Windows ever allow you to keep that particular setting across installs, or even set it during install for that matter.

Other than that great video a few months back ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPnehDhGa14 ) people actually use the upgrade versions of windows?

At install time, not that I saw (at least outside some of the network/thin client stuff) but most people that care use the likes of nlite or vlite if that level of customisation is called for.
