With the amount of times I've suggested to somebody they use a free alternative when their paid program (to do whatever) wasn't working and they just stuck with the free because it was better, I'm going to have to say no to that sentence, outside of some slim examples (such as flash) where there's no free alternative that doesn't suck balls.Aijelsop said:

@Rydian: I understand what you're saying, and on a rational basis, I absolutely agree. The thing is...this kind of reasoning isn't rational but emotional. It's something that fits in their view of the world that the price of something somehow MUST correlate to the quality, and any evidence of the contrary somehow gets ignored.
(my company decided to switch from office2000 to office 2007 because they got a discount because 2010 was released. I couldn't convince the managers that open office can do the same thing...except for free).
OpenOffice isn't as good as microsoft office when it comes to newbies. The ribbon bar makes a lot more sense, so in some situations it's what you'd prefer to use in your office, depending on the tech levels of whoever's working there.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.

But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".

Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
