Hacking Bought New 3DS XL but sadly was on 9.4

I just bought a black New 3DS XL from GameStop last night but sadly, it was on 9.4 so therefore not compatible with Gateway. It seems that I have missed initial launch window of old stock by a couple of weeks. I was holding out until I heard confirmation of Gateway support on New 3DS.

I have an old 3DS on 4.2 so no worries on being able to use Gateway, however, I'm considering selling my New 3DS XL and getting one that is compatible with Gateway. Is there any definitive method for determining the pre-installed firmware on a unit without having to unbox? I could potentially return to GameStop, but I doubt they have any old stock. I have seen somewhere that if the serial number begins with 1000, it should be on 9.2 or below. While it's nice to have the ability to play my ambassador GBA games again on my New 3DS XL, I have several other ways to play GBA games on the go so that is not a huge issue.

Meijer employee here we do have consoles that have 9.0 on them but we have also gotten 4026 consoles now that we are starting to go through consoles. last i checked ebay was a good place to get vulnerable consoles

Depending on the store, yes. Manufacturer's warranty would cover that.

You guys get pretty fucked over then.. Some stores here still refuse refunds, and returns sometimes, however you can take it further here.

Oooo, ouch. You forgot to do your homework about checking UPC codes. What's worse is they don't let you ask for a diff system, because they only hold the few behind counter (locked).

Bring donuts. Make friends. Ask for a 3DSXL with a certain UPC code. Might take it back for exchange, but they'll just give you one from the same shipment batch.

Majority of consoles with a QW10xx serial has a 9.0 system if it's red. My walmart has 3 qw1017 and someone confirmed the other day one with that serial was 9.0. I hope I can get the cash to grab one before they are gone.

I wouldn't say that's true. Just find an employee dumb enough, or one that doesn't really care. OP CAN get his full refund. I would fight it tooth and nail and trust me, it's possible. Open box or not it's returnable.

You know what's funny - GS shipped me my MM 3DS and there was no plastic wrap on it at all. I can easily re-package it and sell/return as a new un-opened item if I really wanted. I'd go to a different gamestop and get your full refund OP.

Walmart would even let you get cash back for opened DS games back in the day. I used to get a few titles I knew were very short, beat them and return.

I know but his sister (the one in US) doesn't know anything about electric devices (except her laptop and phone... maybe...) so she ordered it online :'(

Now hoping that I can get a GW compatible one....

Yup, so even more proof that GS was full of BS not taking it back. Unless OP threw out all of the internal wrapping it would be hard for GS to contend it is an open box.

Well.. if they ask you if it's been opened and you say "yes" then they can refuse it. I'd just walk in there and say "I bought this for my nephew but he's 5 and his mom said kids under 7 shouldn't use this thing". I doubt they'd put up a fuss with that intro.

Really? They've had a "no returns, only exchanges for software, movies, and music" policy for at least 20 years. They gave me a hard time about a Playstation 1 game that wouldn't load for whatever reason back in the late 90's. They had no more copies to exchange with me and refused to give me my money back. After arguing with the manager for a while they finally gave me my money back... but sheesh.

Any time I've returned a console, the desk-jockey opened it up anyway to check it's still in there and whatnot.
I usually buy a console release day locally, but have it on pre-order online for much cheaper, which doesn't make it for a week or so after launch since postal service and what not.
When I get the cheaper console, I return it as the one I bought locally saying my nephew already had it.

I'd try returning it to target as the one you got on 9.0 saying your daughter didn't like the colour, and wanted the N3DS, they'll say it's only available as XL in the US, and you'll egt your money back.
