For anybody who switched off their wi-fi in fear of getting the update prompt for 9.3.0, if you have admin control of your wifi router just block nintendo's update servers according to the "Balanced Urls" in this thread: https://gbatemp.net/threads/blocking-update-servers-clarification-needed.367645/ (Note: This will block the EShop too!)
Edit: Some users have reported their routers not blocking correctly, please be sure to test if your block works!
You can see under the "Domain Name" I put all of Nintendo's update servers and set it so all incoming or outgoing connections to those domains are dropped all day every day for just my 3DS and JAP N3DS LL. I have it set so both my 3DS' will always get assigned the IP 192.168.0.220 and 192.168.0.221 and those IP's are set to block the domain names listed. So far both my 3DS and JAP N3DS LL have been connected to the wifi both on and in sleep mode for about 2 hours now and I've got no updates and I can still enjoy internet features like Nintendo Video/YouTube and such
EDIT: If your router isn't blocking the domains correctly or your router doesn't support domain blocking try this:
DD-WRT users: Domain blocking won't work since it only blocks HTTP and not HTTPS. If you don't want to use OpenDNS you can try something like this
Note: I am not responsible for firmware update nags if your blocking somehow stops working. It's never happened to me before but you never know.
Block them before they block you!

OpenDNS looks like the best bet. At first I thought it was something I needed to install. But actually it's completely webbased (the only software needed is a basic client app to update the IP on the account for those on ISPs that use dynamic IPs, which is what most folks likely have)
So I just configured my LAN connection to use their DNS servers as well and confirmed they are blocked on my PC, thus will definitely carry over to my virtual access point:
And thus results in this when I attempt to view any of the blocked domains in my web browser:
Others who do not need a complicated setup like mine could just point their routers to OpenDNS's DNS servers to apply the filtering to the entire wifi network in their house. So this would be the best option for those who don't have a router that supports this kind of filtering or is finding that they have the feature, but it doesn't work correctly for whatever reason.

OK I know double posting is not allowed but I need to bump this thread.
After messing around in DDWRT I think I managed to block *.shop.nintendowifi.net and *.shop.wii.com
IDK if this block updates or not but it did block eShop (error code everytime).
You just use DNSMasq.
Save, apply and restart your router (or just dnsmasq).
EDIT: Just to be safe, do this:
Code:address=/.shop.nintendowifi.net/127.0.0.1 address=/.shop.wii.com/127.0.0.1 address=/.shop.nintendo.net/127.0.0.1 address=/a248.e.akamai.net/127.0.0.1
EDIT2: Just tested with eShop and System Settings updater. Both returned an error.
Btw this will block for any devices under the router. So be careful if you have another Nintendo device.
