For anybody who switched off their wi-fi in fear of getting the update prompt for 9.3.0, if you have admin control of your wifi router just block nintendo's update servers according to the "Balanced Urls" in this thread: https://gbatemp.net/threads/blocking-update-servers-clarification-needed.367645/ (Note: This will block the EShop too!)

Edit: Some users have reported their routers not blocking correctly, please be sure to test if your block works!

You can see under the "Domain Name" I put all of Nintendo's update servers and set it so all incoming or outgoing connections to those domains are dropped all day every day for just my 3DS and JAP N3DS LL. I have it set so both my 3DS' will always get assigned the IP 192.168.0.220 and 192.168.0.221 and those IP's are set to block the domain names listed. So far both my 3DS and JAP N3DS LL have been connected to the wifi both on and in sleep mode for about 2 hours now and I've got no updates and I can still enjoy internet features like Nintendo Video/YouTube and such :)

EDIT: If your router isn't blocking the domains correctly or your router doesn't support domain blocking try this:
    Warning: Spoilers inside!

DD-WRT users: Domain blocking won't work since it only blocks HTTP and not HTTPS. If you don't want to use OpenDNS you can try something like this
    Warning: Spoilers inside!

Note: I am not responsible for firmware update nags if your blocking somehow stops working. It's never happened to me before but you never know.
Block them before they block you!

I'm running DD-WRT, can you post a screenshot for DD-WRT settings? I'm not 100% sure that I'm doing this right...

Is this necessary? I don't think they can do anything without your consent.

Then people will sell it at an overly inflated price.

I think the same. You have to accept to update, so I don't see the fear.

But if your 3DS doesn't have the update nag yet, then this should prevent it. :)

It's just super annoying to have an update prompt. Better safe than sorry :P

It's also nice for impatient idiots like me, who tend to jam the 'A' button while the console boots.

I've never quite been able to shake that habit.

Man I wish I still had my old dd-wrt router. Does that filter apply to the entire network?

The only time I spam the A button is during Pokemon battles. :P (Not that it ever helps me)

Yes. And I always find these flashable Linksys routers at goodwill stores near me. This one I have is a WRT54GL, the best one to own.

I could see this being useful for the N3DS since it doesnt have a wifi switch, right? But with my regular 3DS I just set up 3 invalid wifi ports on sysNAND and have my real wifi on emuNAND. Just when theres a new incompatible update I turn the switch off until I am playing something thats online. Might have to try this when I get a N3DS soon. So what do you do when/if you need to access the eshop? Disable it all, use the eshop, the reenable it I assume?

Hmm.. guess I'll look into that, I bought this tp-link router a month ago and I can't stand living without dd-wrt :'(. From the looks of it, the settings look correct. My router is weird how it handles URL's so to be safe I'd recommend adding nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net and nus.cdn.c.shop.nintendowifi.net to that block list (assuming dd-wrt handles the URL's the right way). If you're cool with blocking these update servers all throughout your LAN then everything is all good :)

If you have a rooted Android device to tether with, you can use AdAway and put those domains on the blacklist.

Yup, N3DS doesn't have a physical wireless switch. The eShop will only work when you have the latest update so it doesn't matter if you block it you won't be able to access it either way.

Thanks, I'll add those too. I am using my router to catch my neighbor's wi-fi and repeat the signal, with permission. (She gets to use our laundry machines in return)

Makes sense to me, I'll try to do this tomorrow then. I know sooner or later I'm going to mash my way into updating on accident.

Yeah I am just saying when you have the latest firmware version. I guess you could just disable it to get game updates and stuff and then reenable it afterwards.

I have a pile of s**t router provided by my DSL carrier. So of coarse it doesn't have any features to allow this kind of filtering nor does it support any known custom firmwares.

So....Is there a software solution to this? I can instead only allow my 3DS to connect to my PC's wifi adapter. (I use Ethernet to connect to the main router, so the Wifi adapter is just sitting there not being used). It supports being placed in Access point mode as well as using virtual access point.

I used it previously to MAC spoof so that I can fool the 3DS into thinking it's a Nintendo Zone so I could get a streetpassed Eon Ticket into my Pokemon Alpha Sapphire game. So I have been able to have internet access going through my pc and to the 3DS. It's now just a matter of using a middle man program to block certain things.

So I don't see something like blocking update servers being too far a stretch to just have my PC do for me. The question is what software do I look for that can do something like this or is there an existing windows feature or settings in Internet Connection sharing that can facilitate this?
