OpenDNS looks like the best bet. At first I thought it was something I needed to install. But actually it's completely webbased (the only software needed is a basic client app to update the IP on the account for those on ISPs that use dynamic IPs, which is what most folks likely have)

So I just configured my LAN connection to use their DNS servers as well and confirmed they are blocked on my PC, thus will definitely carry over to my virtual access point:

And thus results in this when I attempt to view any of the blocked domains in my web browser:

Others who do not need a complicated setup like mine could just point their routers to OpenDNS's DNS servers to apply the filtering to the entire wifi network in their house. So this would be the best option for those who don't have a router that supports this kind of filtering or is finding that they have the feature, but it doesn't work correctly for whatever reason.

EDIT: CONFIRMED! This works for me. I get a 005-4320 error when I attempt to use eShop. Looks like I'm good to go! :D

Just last night I actually posted a topic on the wifi board for using OpenDNS to block the update. https://gbatemp.net/threads/blocking-the-3ds-from-receiving-the-wifi-update-using-opendns.375643/

Also if you could please screenshot that error code, it would give us all some peace of mind seeing it working :D (or even a 10 second video)

Well, el-cheapo routers don't do what they are supposed to do. (Whether it's a Cisco or not..)

So I did this:
[TUTORIAL] Blocking online updates and the install update nag [EASY]
(Even tough T-games pictures are offline..., too bad.)

The install a downloaded update nag is also avoided IF the CCProxy is running. (As it will constantly try to check for an update and fail, and retry. Eventough an update is downloaded on the console itself.)

So it basically turns your PC into a proxy, then the PC blocks the outgoing request to Nintendo's update server. This won't work if your PC isn't turned on though.

Quick question - if you keep wi-fi connection shut off (on your 3DS) everything should be ok, right? I never turn on wifi, tbh.

Are those only Update servers or do those include StreetPass servers as well? I'd like my Homepass to work without getting prompted for the update. I've gotten one prompt today, hoping not to get any more if I can block their servers!

The domains listed are only update servers. Keep in mind though unless you block those domains on those HomePass AP's your 3DS will download the update and nag you about it.

Right, I just wanted to verify if blocking these would stop the Homepass tags. I'm about halfway done with those damn puzzles, thanks!

I tried to use that tutorial to block Wii U updates for the upcoming kernel exploit, but I could not because the images showing the correct CCProxy configurations do not show up.

Is there a better tutorial to use for blocking Wii U updates where the images will display correctly or the correct configurations are typed out? I have searched for over an hour with no luck.

I spent hours last night trying to block updates through my router. Tried blocking port 443 on the 3DS to disable HTTPS once we figured out that we couldn't block hostnames because of it, but that just broke all external communication. Eventually looked down the MITM HTTPS sniffing proxy route, spent hours reading and downloading tools... then checked here again, and now there's this super-easy method.
Don't I feel smart.

Thank you.

Just updated the post and added what worked for Duo8 and Apache Thunder after testing it out on my own router. This should hopefully help others as well :)

I don't see how being on current firmware would affect that at all.
I think i have the same router as you but i figured as long as you do not have the wifi on while in the main menu that you would be fine. Like only using the wifi to play games online but turn it off before you exit the game to go back to the 3ds main menu.

So between this
https://gbatemp.net/threads/blocking-the-3ds-from-receiving-the-wifi-update-using-opendns.375643/
this
https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-blocking-online-updates-and-the-install-update-nag-easy.369798/
and the tutorial that this thread shows which one of these methods works the best if at all? And will blocking this also block future updates past 9.3?

The OpenDNS guide is easy to do and works perfectly.

Couldn't access eShop, tried to search for new update and got error message, played a round of Mario Kart 7 with no lag.
