You make it sound like the GOP had a primary. They basically didn't. When you have a single candidate hold rabid fanbase to give him 30% of the GOP voter base while the other 12 candidates cannibalize the remaining 70%, the outcome is pretty obvious. If it was Desantis vs Trump from the start, then it may have been a better representation of what right leaning voters would have wanted.

As for this, just try and find people on the left who are angry. You may find a couple here and there, but overall, people are breathing a sigh of relief. Nobody wants another RBG situation. Kamala is extremely qualified for the job, and will take Trump to task on every single one of his lies in a debate. Trump paid stormy to spank him, and now he'll get spanked on stage for free.

The Republicans are in a panic because they revolved their entire campaign around attacking Biden. What exactly were they doing for the nation if it didn't involve a jab at Biden anyways? Now, after billions (?) of dollars and years spent, they can't lean on that anymore. Continually talking about how Biden is too old to lead (Trump is older now than Biden was back in 2020) and how he should drop, but their act was with the assumption that Biden would stick to it and give them the edge they needed. But, Biden dropped out and endorses Harris, who could be their worst enemy. And Republicans are furious about this. It's so entertaining how they are crying that they should receive a refund on the cost of their campaign. This is just desperation of a party that has no idea what to do when faced with consequences for their own actions, wasting people's money because they spent it on attacking someone rather than building up their case. If Trump did not fear Kamala, then he wouldn't find excuses not to debate against her. He got what he wanted at the last debate, so expecting more is expecting too much.

Democrats aren't leftists though, and I'm tired of permitting the false equivalency. The US has no leftist party, relative to global politics. Supporting universal healthcare is a centrist position anywhere you go in Europe, for example.

Raising minimum wage would still be a progressive move today, as federal minimum wage remains $7.25, well under the poverty line. Progressive and leftist still have two distinct meanings, though. Leftist would be something like nationalizing banks, which actually doesn't seem unreasonable for the ones that taxpayers had to bail out.
