Gateway added bricking code to their firmware, knowing that clone cards would rebrand their new release for their card, to kill clone users 3ds's after a certian date.
Date hit, clone users start getting their 3DS's bricked. The brick blanks one of the controller chips, preventing a nand flash from repairing the console.
Various scene progamers find code in gateways launcher that appears to be designed to randomly brick the console if it fails a checksum - Essentially, if the software is modified then you have a chance of getting bricked
Gateway denies this, says that it's because the clones are just shoddy peices of junk.

Gateway says no legitimate users will get bricked, saying that the reports of such users getting bricked is just disinfo passed on by the chinese mafia/clone makers.
Gateway offers to repair/replace bricked gateways that were harmed by their anti-copying feature, but reliterates that only clone users are affected. They require the bricked 3DS to be shipped to them, and if they decide to say that you used a clone and thats why you got bricked you'd have to pay them 100 to get the 3DS back.
Another statement that clones (The r4 series and MT-Card) can cause bricks, and that if you switch over to their card you will be 100% safe
