This is an idea to cut down on the spam from members that were previously banned but make duplicate accounts. When you get banned and try to log in, you see a banned message and a message from a super if they choose to add one. The point being you can still see the forum software.

Since we don't really need the last word for someone that has been permanently removed from the community, why not just replace the ban screen with a 504 error screen? 504's aren't entirely uncommon here, and may make the user think the site is down until they get bored and do something else.

This is good for normal banned users, but not bots

The bots typically aren't an issue. The ad spammers get taken care of pretty quickly. The worst spam are those from disgruntled ex-tempers that spam gore/porn. But like I said, this might help prevent that.

I think they're smarter than that, since those ex tempers lurk around. In fact, they have probably already seen this thread. (Btw, hi Margen)

The problem with this idea, is that it would be quite easy to circumvent still. See a 504? Try an incognito window, where you're not logged in to GBAtemp. If it works, clear your cookies, and "problem" solved. And to shoot it down before it is suggested, tying the ban in some way shape or form to the offender's IP is a terrible idea. IP bans in general are a terrible idea and equally trivial to circumvent.

Well see, I thought the ban system here defaulted to an ip ban. You're right though, the biggest problem is that any kid with a laptop knows how to use proxies and such these days. My theory was that they would get bored with the 504 before ever considering that they were "ghost" banned.

the spam isnt caused by former members
There was that one time though. I can't remember the user, but I do remember the spam.

Still the recent spam isn't former user related and really there's not much the site can do about it. It looks like a lot the spam is most likely real people posting the spam or creating the accounts. The best we as a community can do is just Report and move on. Enough reports, less bumps, and the staff can quickly clean up the little mess.

You're right. The former user thing hasn't happened in probably a year. I don't think that's what Costello meant by "not former members" though. I derailed my own thread in the most ironic way.
