Ok, so I have a softmodded wii and I've been bored and broke lately so thought hey how about I visit that generation of nintendo I totally missed, the gcn days. Problem is every tutorial or walkthrough I find is from 2009 with a broken link, or a link to a site that just automatically dowloads iLivid or some trojan horse bs.

Simple question, I need a GCN backup launcher on my soft modded wii. I have the homebrew channel and actually several emulators on my wii, so not a total noob. But, 4 or 5 years ago when I softmodded it I was in the know, now I'm just old and clueless and I just simply want an app I can put on my sd card load in homebrew and be done. But every tutorial I read tells me I need to update cmos do this that wad this wad that. Again, when I softmodded it I'm sure I would have understood this jargon, but now, I'm just clueless and wanna play luigi's mansion lol. I would read past posts, etc, but EVERY one I've gone to either has a broken link to software or leads me to a site that adds yet another spyware virus program to my computer (as if the loads of porn I download haven't crippled it already lol)

Any help appreciated...

Ok, so I got the normal loader to work, but realized I needed an actual gamecube controller with memory card to save, but as I am a cheapo I have a 5 dollar knock off from five below gamecube controller, works fine, but no saves. So, I read more and found I needed dios mios, but in every tutorial it said I needed to install via a wad manager. I have tried and tried and tried and wad manager 1.7 will simply not show up in my homebrew channel. I placed all of the files (boot.dol icon etc etc) in my apps folder but it simply will not display when I go into my homebrew channel. All of the other apps I have in there show up, so now I'm totally lost...

dios mios replaces the nintendo wii gamecube system (mios) so its not a channel..

you need a fowarder or use wiiflow/usbloader gx or configurable usb loader (modded) to launch the games.

if you want the fowarder (which is a channel to launch the games) i can't help you because i dont use this method

if you want to launch using a usb loader\wiiflow, i can help you with that

which version of dios mios you used? lite or normal?

I have usb loader gx on there already. But all the tutorials I found told me to use wad manager 1.7 to install dios mios so that is what I was trying to do, but unfortunately wad manager 1.7 will just not show up in homebrew, but dios mios will. Should I just run that? Sorry to sound so totally confused but I haven't messed with this thing in several years and have completely forgotten what is what on here, and most guides simply give a step by step do this and give you no clue as to what you are doing (can't see the forest for the trees).

make sure you put wad manager in the right folder, in you sd card it should be like this: SD://apps/wadmanager/boot.dol

so, this means the 3 files must be in a folder inside apps on the sd card

dios mios should be inside a folder "WAD" or "WADS" i dont remember which one.. inside your sd card

dios mios should NOT appear as a wad inside homebrew channel, because it must be launched using another program.

Thanks so much for trying to help, but I delved deeper and apparently I had one of the versions of the wii that will simply not recognize wad manager 1.7, so I had to put Multi Mod Manager on it instead, 20 seconds and BOOM, we're in business. It didn't read the iso's on my usb pen drive but I'm sure I can read through the readme and figure out how to format them or whatever. I swear, I always have the ONE issue that applies to like .05% of users lol. Apparently most 4.3 wii's cannot recognize mod manager 1.7 (or any version), who knew lol, I just happened to see one post on a forum on google, took a gamble, and it worked! But again, thanks so much for trying to help migles, awesome to know there are cool people out there :-) Now at 7am, do I start playing games or consider it a win and crash? That is the question lol

i have a 4.3 wii and there is no problem with wad manager.. but i use multi mod manager which is more simple for me... the only problem with the yet another wad manager 1.7 i had was selecting the right IOS

if you used dios mios (normal version, not the lite one) you must format your HDD to fat32 (usb loaders now support fat32 anyway, there is no reason to stay with wbfs filesystem like the old times..)

so, format your HDD\pen drive to fat32, and copy the gamecube games with the tool included on the zip to the HDD\pen

you must create a folder "games" in the hdd

the gamecube games should be in a folder like this "hdd://games/gamename/game.iso" 1 game for each folder, and the name of the iso must be game.iso If i remember correctly.. (just select the "games folder in the dios mios tool, it will create the subfolder automatically

also, i forgot to tell you, you can save without the memory card, there should be an option on usb loader for enable memory card emulation

try to search on the options for NMM (i guess this means no memory card) and enable it, or memory card emulation, something like that
it will save on a folder inside the HDD next to the game. but a lot of games got problems with this, a real memory card should be better...

for example, i tried pokemon XD and it had problems in creating the save, but i just used dolphin (a pc emulator) to make a save for the game and it is working fine after that, its saving with no issues in the wii

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.
