According to a report by Nikkei, a Japanese media conglomerate the specialises in business and industry, an e-book service is headed to the Nintendo 3DS.
Librica, which is a company formed by TOSE, developers of Densetsu no Stafy and Dragon Quest Monsters and partners in several more development ventures of the last few decades, and publishers Kodansha, Kadokawa Shoten, Shueisha and Shogakukan will be the umbrella company for the service.

So Japan keeps getting all the neat stuff huh? -.-

The neat thing is the fact that they are putting over 100 different Manga series for purchase through the service. I hope it comes to to the west so I can get my One Piece fix :D

Eh, I'm not so sure about this. E-books on tablets are one thing, but the 3DS seems like it would be a bit awkward to read from.

I figure they are just trying to bank on the "It looks like a book if you hold it sideways!" Deal.
Personally, I think its a good alternative for people that don't have an E-Reader, and even better for people to keep their entertainment all in one Package.
I'd buy it if I didn't use my Nook for so much :P

I'm pretty sure if it gets localized to the U.S, we will see titles like Twilight and Harry Potter. Books directed towards children and teens.
Its also a good way for Nintendo to release some Nintendo Comics like they used to years ago.
Plus, it's a good way for people to keep up with Pokemon Adventures!

100 Classic Books Collection, anyone?

I mean, this was pretty neat, and the 3DS has bigger screens, not to mention the 3DS XL/LL. The clamshell design is actually quite good at mimicking an actual book and I found it quite comfortable to use back when I needed those on literature courses. Yes, I used my DS at school.

In any case, it'd be nice if the next device in the Dual Screen family actually has two touch screens rather than one - that would make it the perfect device for such things. It's odd that it never occured as a good idea to Nintendo.

The service requires coordination with various publishers to bring content. Bringing Japanese content to US soils is licensing hell. It's possible, but it'll take a bit of work for anyone who decides to provide this service.

As for western content, yeah, I'm cool with that. But I hope they can bring big titles in, something like George R.R. Martin's novels, or stuff like that. None of those public-domain books, please.

Are you crazy? As long as they're free (as they should be), you've got a wealth of literature that costs you literally nothing.

I broke in my Kindle with Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, and Joseph Conrad without having to spend a single penny. Now that's a deal.

Japan + ebook = manga, US + ebook = moby dick

A literary classic vs. manga. I'll go with the classic.

I take the manga... for this service. Better than that, both.

They address this by saying "it would interfere with the 3d screen". Something like that.
They probably figure it would raised the price too. Maybe the next handheld.

Yeah, from what I read about it, they get free manga too for this service.

*Nintendo Power

Would be cool.

Sweet.

Hope it'll get released in the EU.
With some good content that is.

*dusts off 3DS*
*Knocks him out for having to dust off his 3ds*

I'm guessing this will be on the Wii u as well?

Because I can just get those on tons of other media formats. I want content I can only get there, as much as possible. Something like what I previously said, the A Song of Fire and Ice series, or Lord of the Rings, or the Jack Ryan series, or Redwall series, or fantasy novels, etc.

If Amazon are still on good terms with Nintendo (Amazon Prime Video on the Wii U etc) here's hoping they could strike a deal to start selling kindle books on the 3ds

I hate Japan sometimes, out of jealousy that is. They get so much cool shit the states never see daylight of. It makes me want to learn Japanese, but it's hard enough retaining several other language I don't get to use on a regular basis.

I wouldn't mind it it, but the screens aren't really that optimal in resolution for it compared to tablets around IMHO. We'll see if it ever comes across the seas to Europe/US, but I'm optimistic nevertheless.. Now where did I put my 3DS for safekeeping.

EDIT: Now here I'm just pointing out the difference in retina/high density screens vs the more common displays.. My 2010 MBP with upped res doesn't compare well against a 2012 retina, but is good by itself!

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
