For me, the more I think about death, the more motivated I feel to try and live my best life. I guess it's because I tend to reflect on my life so far whenever I think about death, for instance, I'm currently in the latter-half of my teenage years, but pretty much all of the years before it I had always been focused on what people thought of me and making good impressions, and to some degree that still is the case. So when I think about how short life really is, the more I realize that I should be going out, meeting new people, trying new things and all of that good stuff.

But at the end of the day, I'm still young, and while it definitely makes me somewhat uneasy thinking about it, I try my best to not think about it obsessively.

I'm not afraid of death but I fear the process of dying and suffering. It's really painful watching my relatively healthy father withering away after he caught delta. Death itself, well, do you remember what it's like before you were born? No? Then, it's the same as death. You will feel nothing, remember nothing, etc. and I honestly find it calming.

Oh, this is a great quiestion. You know, when I was little (8 or 9) my dad was enclosed in some shady things on his life, thus, bringing some grizzly experiencies for my family and he always talked about death and that he would be gone the moment we less expected it. When I was about 12 years old, my mind was trying to understand and cope with the definition of death as mature as possible (for that age, I mean, so, yeah it was hard) and I just went in a downward spiral thinking my parents will die someday, my brother and sister, too, some close friends etc. So I became an alcoholic and learned the hard way meany things, at that young and thus, inexperienced age. Creepy.

After some years of experiencing life and making the right choices (I could have been a horrible person, you see, but because I did not fall on the lure of my damned childhood, I was able to keep it up) I finally came to therms with that. I understood that life is a cicle and that it must end some day. It was not easy, but at least it was not as hard as a pain as it was before. It become, more and more an idea that my mind wrapped. Also, (and this is a personal decision) I am a catholic but also a man of facts, so believe me, I have seen death close, and take away some people close to my circle, and some miraculously events that I can't describe with the logic on this world. I believe in God and I am not trying to start a religion war, just my two cents. Not only because somebody told me, no, because I have lived and seen so many things, I truly believe we are not just coincidence.

Now, today, as father of two, married and thank God all my original family still around, I look back and smile because I made the right choices and that has led me to live a happy life, enjoying my loved ones and just living it up. But yeah, still, deep in my soul, sometimes that fear lurks... I guess we all have that fear, and we all are going to face it sooner or later, in ourselves or our dear ones, and that is truly horrible, to be honest, but then again, it is a cycle, it is a natural way of things.

And maybe there will never ever be a street with my name on it, but at least I am at peace beause I know my kids love me, my wife loves me and my original family too (it was not easy, it cost me years of understanding and learning about life and things in general). And if you ask me, that is more important than having a public legacy.

Just my two cents, I really hope you have happines, health and more important, peace in your soul. If you have that, you are assured to enjoy life, even when that grizzly end can be seen on the end of the road.

Cheers man and dont forget to tell your loved ones just that.

Shit ok. So this is something I've been thinking about a lot as of late due to my grandparents not doing too great (specifically my grandfather).
I'm really paranoid about any form of heart issues or cancer because it runs in my family.

It's more... i'm afraid of pain... than death?
I don't want to be in pain. I don't want to feel like my body's failing me. It's horrifying, and my anxiety makes it worse.
So... I don't think I have a method of coping fully yet other than trying not to think of it in the first place.

Existential nihilism, just live in the moment and do whatever makes you happy.

I'm with ya on the nihilism, mostly. More of a 'compassionate nihilist' as in there's no reason to do harm or punch holes in others' balloons, even if good and evil are just subjective human labels and none of it means much. Destruction for destruction's sake has no merit. Also the 'just live in the moment' part isn't wise ... whether life has any meaning or not, planning ahead for accomplishment and security is still a good idea. Living absolutely "in the moment and do whatever makes you happy" will absolutely lead to being forced to do things that make you very, very unhappy indeed.

Look around you. Pay close attention. Look thoroughly at everyone and everything. Every little creature you see, every big breathing animal, including you, we all are going to die, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Everyone who will ever walk on this Earth is born with a deadline, a time limit, that once you pass it you will expire. If you are lucky enough, little by little, you witness the death of all your loved ones. If you are unlucky, they will mourn your death. When the time comes, all of your accomplishments become worthless. If you live a fulfilling life you may become a Portrait in somebody’s living room. If you become important, they may name a library after you. But that is it. All your thoughts, memories, family, everything will be long gone. What 1921 represents for us is just what 2021 represents for those in 2121. No matter what time you have left, we are just in a blink of an eye for our own demise.
So I kindly ask you, how do we cope with death? What do we do?
We have children and the tao.

Death is an irreversible phenomenon in our life. But I think that each of us has the right to a happy life and no one has the right to take our life.

Well. That's when being spiritual come in. The problem with kids and people today is that no one believes in anything anymore. If you we're spiritual and believed in something you wouldn't believe your life is nothing and know that you're working under someones light and you wouldn't be afraid of death. It doesn't have to be Christianity, you just have to believe in something. Knowing that your ancestors is watching your life and will be waiting for you in open arms when the time comes. Even if its al BS in the end it wouldn't matter anyways. You lived your life and either it was true or not it will be relieved then and only then.

Next find something that fulfills your life and make a living on it. Do the work. If it games then create a lets play channel or compete in tournaments and leagues. Find your purpose and believe in something.

I'm at work when i read this so i'm typing quick. Sorry for errors. Believe in spirituality and Purpose.
- The philosopher Pascal believed that humanity should live as if (a) God exists. That way, if God(s) don't/doesn't exist, you have only a finite loss (pleasures, luxury, etc.). While if God(s) do/does exist, then you have infinite gain (everlasting life/Heaven) and avoided infinite loss (everlasting torture/Hell). I feel this is a logical conclusion, as we all have a 50/50 chance of being right or wrong.

I don't need to cope, and I don't say that flippantly. I don't need to cope because it doesn't bother me, at least not on a daily basis. Death is an inevitability and it ought to be your fuel for living. Memento mori, as the Stoics said.

I understand feeling sombre that nothing lasts, but I don't understand an actual fear of death. That said, OP, if you ever want to chat about it, I'd be happy to help (if I can).

I myself have just come to accept it as the inevitable. There is no sese worrying over it, as we will all go through it some time in our lifetime. I've lost a number of people in my life; my grandmother died several years ago; my mother's live-in boyfriend died in his sleep 2 years ago. My mother recently passed away due to Covid Pneumonia. My cousin and the girl he was with both died in a motorcycle crash this last week. Believe me, death is the only thing that has been on my mind. And to top of all that, I had to move within a few months after my mother's passing. I take walks on nice days and sit near a lake that's nearby to try to calm my thoughts. All you can do is keep moving forward, as ultimately, we don't know what life has ahead for us.
