The Last of Us Part II sells over 4 million in 3 days

"We’re delighted to report that The Last of Us Part II is now the fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive ever with more than 4 million copies sold through as of June 21. This milestone would not have been reached without the support from our amazing fans, so on behalf of everyone at SIE, thank you!"

By comparison, Spiderman was the previous record holder with 3.3 million in 3 days. The Last of Us 2 obliterated Spiderman and is now the best selling PlayStation exclusive ever.

Neil Druckmann, Vice President of Naughty Dog and Director of The Last of Us Part II, wanted to share this message with you all:

"We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar.

The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog. We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone."

Anyway guys, this game is in developing for 7 goodanm years, i doubt all those sale are able to break even....
It started on the second semester of 2014, so nearly 6 actually.

I don't get all the hate, is it just because it has a gay protagonist? We knew Ellie was gay from Left Behind.

This is the basic run down practically. I don't know how to do spoiler tags correctly but if any mods can fix it for me that would be nice than you

The crazy thing is that there are people actually sounding like this when people don't like the game who rush to defend it. There are valid reasons for liking the game too like graphics and immersion but to me the story is really at the center of this. This is the story game so the story takes priority before anything else. Boy they screwed up imo

I haven't played yet, but what is the issue with the story then?

They corrupt the main characters of the last game, and focus way too much on trauma and death and gore. They brutally murder the only likeable male character, and try to villainise Ellie whilst humanising Joel's killer (who is, of course, a very masculine girl) by depicting their interactions with animals - the killer plays fetch with a dog and rescues a zebra from barbed wire, while Ellie's forced to kill that same dog.

Yet another game with undeserved success; there's been far too many of those lately...

I heard the game was pretty garbo.
I'm not a fan of the Last of Us anyways but here's my big F in chat for any TLOU fans; Now you know how us Pokemon fans feel.

I'll have to play to see, but it's a dystopian game, I think it's only natural the characters live in trauma, and the first game already showed some character complexity doing questionable choices to survive. Many didn't agree with Joel's ending decision and they were forced to do it.

Either way, let's say the plot is bad, is that reason to boycott the game? I see tons of games praised here by almost everyone with very crappy plot and characters and nobody is talking about boycotting them. Specially games that are cartoonish of have an anime art style seem to get a free pass in the lack of tri-dimensional characters and a believable plot.

For someone from the outside it does seem like a political motivated outcry. People crying out loud conspiracy theories like 'cultural marxism' or 'brainwashing' doesn't really help at all either.

When it's blatant propaganda and ruins everything the first game so carefully constructed? When the first game did not need a sequel whatsoever?
Yes. Most people won't enjoy just how gory and traumatic the story is; most TLoU fans won't enjoy it, due to it destroying beloved characters and adding new characters that didn't need to exist.

The problem with comparisons like this is that the two don't relate in any meaningful way. Desires are not monolithic and different people can want different things from gaming. A person who was invested in the original Last Of Us isn't necessarily going to care about the latest instalment of Anime Tiddy Simulator 2000 and the quality of its writing. But when the sequel to the story driven game they love comes out, and fails to reach that level of quality writing by a large margin, that is something that's going to draw their ire.

I really get annoyed when people claim the game is bad because of propaganda or such arguments, this is not the reason and it really contaminates the discussion.

The game is bad because the storytelling fails badly, it is not well written. It has nothing to do with this tinfoiling ridicule arguments about propaganda and whatnot.
