The Last of Us multiplayer title delayed; Naughty Dog working on a new single-player game

tlouheader.jpg

Back at Summer Games Fest 2022, Naughty Dog announced a new multiplayer Last of Us game alongside the PC port of the first game's remake. Few details were given, just that it began as a mode for The Last of Us Part II, but eventually outgrew that to become its own title. It appears now, however, it is being scaled back down, as Naughty Dog redirects resources elsewhere and reassesses the viability of the live service.

Naughty Dog confirmed the delay on Twitter, writing that the game needed more time and they would continue developing the project alongside "other games...including a brand-new single-player experience." They did not confirm if the new game is related to previous IPs or if it will be wholly original.

The Last of Us fans,

We know many of you have been looking forward to hearing more about our The Last of Us multiplayer game. We're incredibly proud of the job our studio has done thus far, but as development has continued, we've realized what is best for the game is to give it more time.

Our team will continue to work on the project, as well as our other games in development, including a brand-new single-player experience; we look forward to sharing more soon.

We're grateful to our fantastic community for your support - thank you for your passion for our games, it continues to drive us.

Sources speaking to Bloomberg have reported that the delay was prompted by Sony themselves. Sony purchased Bungie early last year, in part, to work on their upcoming slate of live-service games, and asked Bungie to evaluate the live-service titles in development. Bungie questioned the long-term viability of the project, which led to Naughty Dog scaling it back and reassigning some staff.

A prequel co-op game set in the start of the apocalypse could be interesting. Group of people trying to escape a major city and reach some remote safe location while evading zombies tHe iNfEcTeD on one side and the army on the other. Maybe a Dishonored mechanic where if you kill too many soldiers or healthy humans they start hunting you down in larger numbers, so stealth and evasion is encouraged when dealing with them, while with zombies all bets are off. And of course the mechanic to bait/herd zombies towards military road blocks so you can sneak past in the ensuing chaos. That would be fun.
Escape before the bomb comes down.

The concept art for the cancelled jak game looked so bad so yeah hope they don't go back to it until they remember what makes jak jak.

I'm so excited for a narrative driven shooter to give us a multiplayer experience, I bet that'll make tons of sense and won't be complete trash!
Guys let the series die it's pretty clear it's all downhill after 1...why they gotta make the death more painful and drawn out.

Just like Final Fantasy.
No, triggered by a prospect of having a new game with an LGBT character.

Also Final Fantasy mainline games don't follow each other, they just have common themes. I dislike them since XII but if the parallel is draging the plot further, doesn't really apply. Unless you want to specify FInal Fantasy VII with the Compilation, since even the "remake" is another sequel than actually a remake.

Sony ordered them to make another single player game due to the falling out of replies about the showcase lacking, i am guessing.

Also funny is that they asked Bungie to evaluate another studios game. Firsty, does Sony not have the confidence to know what the "fans" want and secondly, they ask another studio that is doing a live service game so obviously they don't want another game to cannibalize their studios game since they (judging from leaks) both not only live service games but doing extraction shooters too.

Maybe also thirdly, since bungie keeps their ips unlike naughty dog where they are Sonys ip strictly and won't be ported might have a role in it as an exclusive live service game will make less sense

Last of us 3 incoming, this time we get to brutally slay Ellie and play as an even more unlikeable unknown character - hurrah!

But seriously I suspect it will be a good game, they would be smart to at least cater a little more to their core audience
Stop with these dumb ideas.

For me, last of us 2 had the worst story and pacing of all the games i've played. It felt forced. I hate it so much that I created a metacritic account just to get it off my chest.

They saved it on the website by only having a Facebook page.

They seemed to have delisted episode 1 and 2, but left 3 online, is this a newmarketing technique ?
Oh wait it's like a miniseries or something? Huh, the imdb page said it was a short.

emulation isn't telling the silicon to perform a specific way, it's just translating the commands into something the cpu can understand

    fpga runs them natively

and i assume there is a level of verification that is not possible with emulation since you can actually probe the pins to verify that it behaves the exact same as real hardware

so it's easier to get it 1:1

there aren't even virtual pins with emulation that you could "probe", it doesn't go that deep

i guess they were thinking in emulation capabilities

In emulation capabilities one can run Gamecube and the other can barely run n64.
