Insomniac offers more information on what to expect from Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Revealed early-on in the PlayStation 5 lineup showcase was Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the follow-up to 2018's Spider-Man game for the PlayStation 4. But following the much-hyped trailer were fans confused about what exactly the game was: an add-on to the original, standalone DLC content, or a brand new game? Developer Insomniac answers that question in a new PlayStation Blog that goes into further detail regarding the announcement trailer. The story involving Miles Morales will take place somewhere around a year after the first game's story, with the scope of this new game to be comparable to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in terms of content, with the latter existing as standalone DLC that complimented the game that came before it and had its own full story. Spider-Man: Miles Morales will also take advantage of being on next-gen hardware, with some of the changes from the original PS4 title being improved character models, higher-quality assets, ray-tracing, 3D audio, and much faster loading. And while this adventure focuses on Miles Morales, Peter Parker's story hasn't ended either, claims Insomniac. You'll be able to get ahold of the game and see for yourself when it launches sometime this holiday season.

Hi! I’m Brian Horton, Creative Director at Insomniac Games. Last week, we were so thrilled to introduce you to the beginning of your Marvel’s Spider-Man journey on PlayStation 5 – Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. This standalone game lets players experience the rise of Miles Morales as he discovers new powers that set him apart from his mentor, Peter Parker.

The reaction we received last week was nothing short of incredible. But we wanted to take a little bit of extra time to talk about the game and the trailer you saw and point out some things you might’ve missed. Take a look above.

At Insomniac Games, we’ve loved the character of Miles Morales for a long time. It started years ago, when Bryan Intihar (Creative Director, Marvel’s Spider-Man), suggested that we should have Miles Morales be a part of the same universe as Peter Parker. We sneakily introduced him at the end of our E3 2017 demo, surprising the audience when they thought the PlayStation Briefing was over.

As we continued with the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, we knew that Miles’s origin story as a Spider-Man was something that needed its own game. Miles’s multicultural background reflects a more modern, diverse world and we wanted to give players a new story, with new set-pieces, fresh villains, and unique quests across Marvel’s New York City. This had to be a can’t-miss next adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.

Let’s set the scene for the game a little more. It’s now wintertime, about a year after the events of the first game. Marvel’s New York is covered in snow, and just before Christmas break, a war between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army has broken out. Miles’s new home in Harlem is at the heart of the battle.

We know a lot of you want to know how big this game is. Our team at Insomniac has been working incredibly hard to bring you a fantastic Miles Morales adventure since we concluded development on Marvel’s Spider-Man. You’ll experience a full story arc with Miles, one that’s more akin to a game like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in terms of overall scope. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an important, heartfelt, emotional and essential experience to expanding the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. And we hope it will be for you as well.

We are also excited for the game to demonstrate the power of PlayStation 5 this holiday. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio and the DualSense controller. We’ve upgraded our characters with 4D scans and improved skin shading for more realistic looking characters and spline-based hair that moves far more naturally. Many of the city’s assets have also been updated to take advantage of the new console. As you experience Miles’s story, you’ll see, hear, and feel things in a whole new way, all thanks to PS5.

It’s been amazing to be creative director on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, working with such an incredible team. I joined Insomniac near the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and being able to collaborate with our team and Marvel to create a new story and experience all around Miles Morales has been a career highlight. It’s been great to also work with Bryan Intihar, who directed the first game, as he continues to imagine big things for the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.

Oh and one last thing: Many of you fans have wondered if Peter Parker is OK. Don’t worry, we still have much of Peter’s story left to tell. But this game is all about Miles, a critical part of our Spider-Man universe, and you won’t want to miss what happens.

Thank you so much for the incredible reaction to our game last week, and for all of the kind words on social media. We’re so looking forward to getting to spend more time with you in the coming months to reveal more of the game we’ve all been working on.

We can’t wait to see you swinging through a wintery Marvel’s New York City this holiday. For all the latest, be sure to follow Insomniac Games on Instagram and Twitter.

I dont know how I feel about this. Spiderverse was so good because of the world, characters and artstyle. Removing most of that and just putting Miles into the ps4 spiderman game just gives me mixed feelings.

I know that miles first appearance wasnt in spiderverse, but thats where most people know him from. I just wished that they would somehow mix both versions of the character, especially since spiderverse was so well recieved.

Considering how recently the PS4 Spiderman is and how well it was received it will be hard to beat.

Plus let's face it, many people might ignore the game because this isn't Peter Parker.

He was introduced into the game well, what is mixed about that? If miles was just brought in then I would agree, but they built him up plus we are still getting a Spider-Man 2.

I grew too attached to Peter Parker to not be biased and like anything with Miles Morales in it less, not that I'll hate it tho...

More Insomniac Spider-Man can only be a good thing, I'd be just as happy with Spider-Gwen or any other character. Especially if it means we get a Spider-verse game later on with all of them teaming up.

Miles' powers lend themselves to some interesting gameplay ideas too, I'm imagining Spinter Cell fused with InFamous.

I dunno, maybe they could've bundled it with the full game, which they showed on PS5 months ago showing off the access speed advantages, but then again with PS4 BC, will that super fast loading just work by playing the PS4 game?
Either way, this doesn't come as a surprise as it was already mentioned to be dlc sized - as long as they're not trying to flog it at $60 I'm fine with it..

spider man PS4 was the first open world game in ages that made fetch quest and exploring fun again, it was a blast from beginning to finish, The DLC was a bit hit or miss.

But sadly I like Good old Peter Parker, and the characters I grow up with,
im not going to invest time in a character that i dont care about, actually i didnt even know him until the very end of the game,

damn, it's like it's 2011 again in this comment section

I hope you all give Miles a chance. He's an amazing Spider-Man, pun intended. You won't regret taking a chance on him, he's the true successor to Peter's legacy.

So Brian Intihar isn’t the creative director of this game, meaning they probably started developing Marvel’s Spider-man 2 at the same time with some of the developers, and the rest will join after Miles Morales releases

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol
