Final Fantasy VII Remake officially confirmed as a timed PS4 exclusive until March 2021

6maLdmn.png

The release date for Final Fantasy VII: Remake is fast approaching, and PlayStation 4 players will soon have the chance to play a reimagined version of one of the most popular JRPG's of all time. However, the game won't be just a purely PS4 experience, as shown by a newly revealed boxart for the game. At the bottom of the game's cover art is a banner, denoting that FFVIIR will be a timed exclusive. This has already previously been hinted at multiple times throughout the game's development, from the initial reveal saying "play first on PS4", to Xbox Germany claiming that the game would release on the Xbox One (later having the statement walked back as a mistake). What is new, and relevant from this cover, is the timeframe of when Final Fantasy VII: Remake could be headed to other platforms--March 3, 2021. Square Enix still hasn't confirmed that the game will be headed to any other platform, at this time, but there's a decent amount of options as to what fans could expect. Previously, the company brought Kingdom Hearts compilation titles to the Xbox One, and has a history of porting Final Fantasy games to PC, showing support for both platforms. Considering the date, it could also mean that we may see Final Fantasy VII's remake make its way to the next generation of game consoles.

Thanks for testing it Sonybros :^)

Jokes aside, good to see we'll get it handed to us on PC. Just like how they did it with XV, I guess they wanted to go the same route. Takes less stress off with being given an extra year on porting it. I'll probably buy both versions.

I honestly saw this one coming. The days of AAA Final Fantasy games being exclusive entire to PlayStation have been gone since FFXIII. And it makes Square more money, more fans get a chance to play the latest and greatest ff game so everyone wins in the end. Very much looking forward to FFVII Remake. A Switch Port would be awesome, although it would have to be watered down graphics wise to run on the hardware I imagine. It would be similar to what they had to do with Witcher 3 to get that beast of a game to run.

Thank fuck it's only a year. I was worried it would take them 3 years to port it, like it sometimes does.
I'm still not sold on the new battle system, but the cutscenes look great, they clearly put a lot of effort into portraying the story. Cutscenes are something I always miss when going back to older 3D JRPGs. FF7 technically has them, but all they're used for is camera movement and animating objects, the character models are drawn on top. I just feel like it's much more immersive and emotional when you have prerendered, detailed character interactions and animations.
And the bosses actually look fun. So maybe I won't end up hating the battle system after all.

There is no way in hell I am ever going to buy a PS4 just to try out the FF7 remake though, so I was hoping they would port it to PC, and looks like that will probably happen.
Still can't understand why is this part the most popular, have no idea at all. I think 9 is overall, character, story, just the warmth of mix of it all, best to me.
The best isn't necessarily the most popular.
I think part of it might have to do with FF7 coming out earlier in the PSX' life span, so more people had a chance to play it and more people have nostalgia for it.
But also, the bad guys in FF7 to me seem far more interesting than FF9. And the semi sci-fi setting is more unique and interesting. FF9 is superior in other ways, but I would have a hard time picking a favorite. They're both great in their own ways.

I'll be purchasing this when it comes out. I never pre-order anything. In anticipation for its release I have purchased Final Fantasy VII for the Switch for less than $15 and am enjoying playing it using a fresh coat of paint. I bought the original Final Fantasy VII on launch day and it has been quite some time since I played it. I wanted to make sure I'm up-to-date with the story before I dive into the remake. While playing the PC version in 4k on Ultra will be nice the PS4 is still a completely viable platform to play games on. I'm sure the Pro's 4k graphics will suffice.

There are far more mods for the PC version of FF7 so that is the one to play if you want a fresh coat of paint ;)

Aye, this is a big release, so I expect multiple releases over the years with various tweaks and updates. Probably a PS5/PS6 upgraded release as well eventually. I'm perfectly fine with all of this. It's a great game with compelling story-telling. The original is, at any rate. Hopefully this remake/re-imagining builds on what made the original great instead of character/story-swapping ffXV. Here's hoping.

I will buy the initial versions and I'll buy the re-releases. I have zero shame. PC mods will be quite lovely whenever it comes to PC as well.

Meh. This is just evidence Square-Enix has peaked and no longer believes in the Final Fantasy IP. I even recall an article years ago in which one of the producers or CEOs said this would only happen when they had their backs against the wall. I guess XV really didn't perform to their liking internally.

Did people actually think this was exclusive? The first time the game was shown it was already said "Play it first on ps4" so that was already a huge hint right there.

Final Fantasy 7 holds a special place in people's hearts, especially Europeans as it was their first* Final Fantasy. It came along at the a time when we were moving away from sprite based games and into the realms of polygons. At the time it had everything you wanted in an RPG, wonderful graphics, a fabulous story and amazing music. Back in the day it was rare to hear a bad word said about it. Back in the day of the PS2 there were even whispers on the wind of a FF7 remake. Fans have wanted it for such a long time now. It was inevitable that one day it would come to, Square Enix would mad not to, but, and this is a big but, they absolutely had to get it right.

I see people asking " why not 8 " or "why not 9" And the answer to that is that they probably will in time, but Final Fantasy 7 was one of the games that defined the Playstation and cemented Sony as a serious player in the console market. Had the N64 been CD based maybe all this would have been a very different story.

Square Enix knew they had a mammoth task in front of them as well as appeasing old fans of Final Fantasy 7 they needed to draw new fans in to the fold and to try and recapture the magic of the original. Have they been successful in doing this? Well I guess we are going to have to wait until March 3rd to find out, but in my opinion they are certainly on the right track based on everything I have seen and read since it was announced. A lot of people seem to criticize Square Enix for making the game 'Episodic' to that I say a couple of things. When it was announced I think episodic was perhaps was a poor choice of words or if not said officially ( I honestly cannot remember) it was misconstrued what was meant (possibly by pundits trying to generate more click for their content). Final Fantasy 7 on it's own is a big game. You can easily sink 80 hours in to it and not see or experience everything and lets not forget the other games and media in the Final Fantasy 7 compilation.* To stand any chance of doing the source any justice at all, it had to be split up into parts. There is no escaping given what leaps in technology we have seen in gaming since the initial release and Square Enix wanting to not only remain true to the original, but expanding it, adding content back into the game that had to be cut either for technical or time constraints.

Another comment I see a lot is " oh its not turn based" to them I say it's 2019 and while I'm not saying that turn based games have no place in 2019,I love to play turn based games on a regular basis, but we have come along way since 1997. Back then it was all technical limitations and sticking to broadly what had come before with previous entries and introducing new system and elements. If you don't enjoy the more action focused gameplay then hey, they have a turn based mode just for you and if that still isn't enough you can just head on over to steam and pick up a copy of the Remaster of Final Fantasy 7* Throw the Remako mod on it maybe a add a character model/texture mod for good measure maybe one of the retranslation patches .

No one is going to force you to buy and play the Remake. If your not sure what to expect the wait. Wait for the reviews to come out or the price to drop. Yes I agree that timed exclusivity is a silly practice but as gamers we shoulder much worse practices in the industry*.

What I'm trying to say at the end of all this is games are meant to be enjoyed. I'm if Square Enix really wanted to fleece us they would have just shoehorned microtransactions or loot boxes in à la EA. They really want, No have to get this right. A game this high priority failing could easily spell the end of Square Enix, at least as we know them today. It's not just a game, it's their reputation, their future and their legacy.

Regardless on how things end up, the original game will always be special for me. Hopefully this game will bring the world I once adventured across, alive once again.

* We did get Mystic Quest but without the FF branding associated with it
* Before Crisis (jp only), Crisis Core, Advent Children, Dirge of cerberus and on away to a smile
* I personally thought this was a bit of a missed opportunity to do a little more work on FF7 maybe tidy up the graphics a little more and do a few nips and tucks to the translation
* I'm looking at you Microtransactions and loot boxes in full priced games

because it was the first final fantasy (or even j-rpg) for a lot of people
In the short: YES. I have played this Game with 9 years and loved it. So played and loved 8 and after that 9 and also 10. FF9 is neutrally the best Game, but don’t underestimate childhood-memories, they are really strong. My big break with the series was FF12 because of the poor storyline. FF13, FF13-2 was mediocre. And FF15? It’s not that bad, but it’s different, it’s … a good JRPG, but a bad FF

Ooof... The wait. On the flipside, it being an Unreal Engine 4 game, like The Outer Worlds, outta mean it would run pretty well even if I've not upgraded by then.

Also, by the time it does get the pc release treatment, it should hopefully have more of the dlc integrated with the release.

Timed exclusive and episodic? Not a great look and I am curious to see what they will do to spice things up and tell a coherent story within individual games -- Square Enix have not quite pulled a Bioware or anything just yet but their major tentpole in house stuff this last however many years has been very dubious (I don't think I have played a mainline Final Fantasy game or straight sequel that I liked since 12, and I am apparently something of a freak for enjoying that one. Didn't much care for 10 either).

If someone says square to fk off then I also hav a right to tel them ther idiots or be equal and tell them to fk off as they hav just done the same thing to someone else- but as you can see we've been talking and for most part it's been no name calling and we had a healthy debate-if I slagged off nintendo then I expect people to tell me to fk off thts the way it is -I don't think as deep as you or some others here I just play the games tht I kno I will like and couldn't giv a damn what go's on behind the scenes of how a company operates
Are companies not jesters that dance for my amusement?

Hundreds get founded and go bust without it bothering me so much. The collision of Square and Enix doing better than most contenders but still jesters that dance for my amusement and can die and be replaced trivially. Why would I possibly expend any effort defending them or being upset if someone else dismisses them?

What a world we live in.

No combat turns.... The hype is strong with this Game, but no for me, even i prefer action combat but this remake must respect the pilars of the game
Probably a hot take, but battle system in original FFVII isn't all that good to begin with - too slow to deliver action, yet still forces too much interaction on the player (don't choose fast enough = lose turns) to have that "kick back" and relax appeal. I'm glad that they're leaving this jank behind and going into Crisis Core direction instead.
