The PlayStation 4 reaches 102.8 million sales, becomes second best-selling home console of all time

New statistics show that the PlayStation 4 is one of the most popular game consoles of all time. According to Sony's recent financial results for the quarter, the PlayStation 4 has just reached a massive 102.80 million sales. This officially places the PS4 as the second highest-selling home video game console, dethroning both its progenitor, the original PlayStation, and Nintendo's massively popular Wii in one fell swoop. The only console that surpasses such high sales numbers is the PlayStation 2, which sold over 155 million units during its reign. If you factor handheld consoles into the equation, then the PS4 is only the fourth highest-selling, beaten out by the original Game Boy/Color line, and the Nintendo DS.

While attaining such a high amount of sales is impressive, it appears that as the PlayStation 4's lifespan comes to a close, sales are beginning to slowly decrease. Sony originally predicted that the console would sell 15 million units this fiscal year, but they've lowered their projections to a slightly smaller 13.5 million.

congrats sony! I'm still hoping nintendo pulls ahead in the end though :P

tbf the PS4 failure rates probably count for at least 20% of that total, at one point i was getting 40+ broken consoles in per week, only to be surpassed in failure rate by the xbox 360

PS2 was pretty reliable, so couldn't argue with those sales totals...well except lots of people bought it simply as a cheap DVD player
That's one of the reasons I tend to use my xbox 1s more than my ps4. 4k blurays, kodi for all my video files, and streaming. ps4 video support is atrocious.

It's odd it didn't seem to affect too much this generation, when it was so important during the ps2 era. Suppose everyone already has something which supports those things or don't care about them.

I tried repairing a few ps4s, but the blue light of death is a bit rougher to fix than the 360 ring of death.

I remember how much it struggled at the beginning of it's life. It all pointed to the PS4 being a major flop for Sony. Man it have turned around haven't it?
i dont remember ps4 ever struggling lol, it was 100$ cheaper than xboxone and sold pretty damn well and the xbox one struggled and you can see how they ended up.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

4 ps1s, ps2s, psps all dead. I'm on my sixth ps3 and i just gave away my third and last psp go for a Pseudo Saturn, because i got tired of them breaking.

My made in 2006 360 elite is still running flawless. I also just revived another back into full operation. I've also since revived and restored four original Xbox systems.

I've had Nintendo systems break but most of the time I've been able to repair them fully as well.

It's also impossible not to recall how especially bad Sony's deal with Foxconn is, considering the company opted rather than to offer proper mental health and counseling services for their employees, to instead by some anti-suicide nets because so many literally wanted to die than make a single ps4 more.

And none of this factors in the pro model, and how most all the games i gave even half a care about actually ran worse on the upgraded model; all because Sony had to arbitrarily mandate that "games can't run better than on the vanilla model".

It's like I'm watching lemmings jumping to their death. Or the amount of people that literally buy a brand new iphone every year, to the day.
i have no idea what you do to your consoles lol

got
original n64 still working only replaced the transformer
gc from launch day
ps2 phat
ps3 phat(made a small fix because it was heating and replaced the metal part or whatever its perfect again for years to come)
original xbox
xbox360
launch day wii
wiiu
switch

everything still works only the phat ps3 ever needed a fix and t was like 15 euros and the n64 got a new transformer because the original one fryed on a thunderstorm.

srs how can you break so many consoles is beyond me lol.

never ever had to buy a console because one broke in my lifetime and i follow all 3 companys.

I see you are part of the ****ing problem then, stop buying them ....
And what am i supposed to do when the console breaks in the middle of a play through or i have a library of games for it at home?

And in the case of the ps3, it is basically still useful as a bluray player. The only other I'd have is the drive in my PC; even then, it feels like even the most basic player programs out there get progressively worse. I haven't even yet to be able to fogure out how to make my own in spire of having the media for it. Mostly because the programs that used to come with the purchase of a burner either flat out don't exist or are so deliberately obtuse, that i can forgive someone thinking that "optical media is ded" on PC.

I have no use for a ps4 because the ps4 won't even try to have any backwards compatibility. An xbox one is still infinitely more useful than a ps4 to me for this reason, too.

it depends on a lot of factors, amount of use, ambient room temperature where you live, humidity, type of usage, i know a lot of the consoles i had to fix this generation were HDMI port faults on both the Xbox one AND the PS4, the xbox one had the retimer chip issue on the xbox one S though so a little more work than just replacing the HDMI port on the PS4, but then again i would prefer doing the XB1S retimer chip than the PS4 HDMI port simply because its much easier and faster to get the XB1S apart and back together, again the majority of console owners are children who are more rough or less concerned about ventilation as its their parents who have to pay for the system so its kinda unreasonable to say "works good for me so they are all big fat liars" i saw the same stuff getting said about the joy con drift issues "well i have 30 pairs of joy cons and never had an issue, so your all BS'ing", if the failure rate of a console is somewhere around 20-30% you could be in that 70% that never have an issue, while someone else could roll unlucky and land in that 30% 3 times in a row, so the vast majority of people have zero issues, while a good 30 million people have consoles that die within a couple of years.

so again the PS4 is nowhere near the failure rate of the XBOX 360 at launch, but i have had a consistent stream of failure all the way through its lifespan, even with Pro consoles, it seems the XB1 was the opposite though, original consoles are pretty solid, the XB1 S and XB1 X both have the HDMI re-timer chips failing fairly often

Nintendo DS is the second best and Gameboy/color is the third best console. This statement that PS4 is the second best is wrong.

I suspect it was deliberately designed to not be, at least initially, a middle end high value media center (due to their typical logic of selling the hardware at a loss) - never had one but I remember the official media player software wasn't out for a while...

Also agree with people saying the PS4 is the only $ony home console without flagrant reliability problems to be blamed on cheapassing

The PSVR will have contributed in those numbers since it gave many their first taste of actual VR gaming without needing to build a PC and then get a PC headset.

I've got one and i don't regret my purchase at all and i got it as an add-on to the PS4 that i have since launch day.

And since the console launched i only had one issue where the console didn't wanted to give me my disc back but thanks to the engineering at Sony and the screw that controls the disc drive mechanism i was able to get the disc back out

And yet it STILL accounts for a very, very, VERY small and insignificant amount of PS4 owners.
You are really underestimating this

100+ million and I am still not sure what games I am supposed to be playing on it.

This many years into the 360 I was doing fantastically for games, and after a seriously rocky start the PS3 was also more or less doing things. Here I am at a loss.

The games look recognisable, play about the same (I am still enjoying such things on a 360 so it is not like I aged out or something) and do much the same things but I am really not sure what I care to take away from this generation. I am normally quite content to enjoy a game on a console and get the PC version in a few years post bug fixes and mods. I walk through game shops and... nothing jumps out at me as either something to get or something to hope I find cheaper/save up for.

The PSVR will have contributed in those numbers since it gave many their first taste of actual VR gaming without needing to build a PC and then get a PC headset.

4.2 million as of late March 2019 (October 2017 launch)
https://venturebeat.com/2019/03/25/playstation-vr-sales/

That is nothing, even if we assume it saw people buy their first or reup for the shiner model. The utter flop that was the kinect did 24+ million https://www.engadget.com/2013/02/11/microsoft-xbox-360-at-76m-sold-worldwide-kinect-at-24m/ (November 2010 launch there, the xbone launching in November 2013).

You are really over-exaggerating this. PS4 release date - November 15, 2013. PS4 Fortnight release date - July 21, 2017. By the time that dumb game was on the PS4, the console was already above 62 million in sales. Thanks. Goodnight. :)

[ps2]it will be extremely hard to ever beat that imo dont know if any console will ever sell like that.

I can see it happening, indeed I would be surprised if it doesn't happen sooner than later. 155 million is the number many look at here for sales volumes but there are higher estimates (less than 10% though).

By various markets opening up and countries gaining if not wealth then people with some disposable income (a game console takes you out of a bad situation into something fun so it ends up surprisingly high on the list) it means there are plenty more markets coming online (China, South America, India, middle east perhaps, Russia maybe) and 150 million + is quite reasonable there. Japan might also be fading a bit as a result of that, though the death of Japan centric gaming might be harder to quantify if we are going to consider China and its state in the world).

Also at this point it is fairly reasonable to have had people that are now grandparents into gaming their entire lives (it has been about 40 years since the Atari dropped -- if you were 10 when it dropped or even a greasy teenager you will be in your 50s or nearer than not) so it has gone widespread/mainstream as part of that, though I will note it took a while longer for it to become a mainstream hobby (something some put at the feet of the PS1*), never mind it getting to the point where it is somewhat weird if you don't play games, so we also have that to look forward to. That alone will probably be enough but I will ponder further.

*at what time the PS1 really hit I don't know but I don't imagine anybody is going to put it much later than the January 1997 launch of Final Fantasy 7 (22 years ago, and nearer to 23, at time of writing, if you were 10 for that launch then chances are you have a kid or two, quite possibly one that themselves is now 10 years old).

So between all that and people often buying multiple consoles (bedrooms, front rooms and possibly a game room, as well as if they serve as media players) you surely have the potential to get there.

I am not entirely sure what the next one will look like. Probably going to be some actually useful multimedia device ("smart" TVs have had how many years now, would have been trivial to sort at basically any point during that and still utterly suck... we can probably count on that continuing for a little bit, to say nothing of TV replacement rates being far lower than that and 3d and 4k and whatever all floundering), and maybe for the would be competition to fail or render themselves secondary devices like the Wii (nobody sensible got the Wii to stay current on games). Speaking of failure wind in a bit of a failure that necessitates replacement (quite possible with the amount of heat modern things generate) and maybe a mid tier upgrade (if nothing else ensuring those two+ device houses) will pump those numbers up a bit, just make sure they have a few hundred hours of pleasure first. I am not sure what online will factor into this but will likely help if local play is to remain on life support. Phones/tablets might trouble this but they also have had many years and are still largely bad for what we typically expect from consoles despite outpowering many things throughout it, though I would be less surprised to see some company break away from Apple's awful design philosophy.
On the negatives then I don't know what effects the fractured culture (as in back when I were a lad there were 3 channels on TV, not that many more radio stations of relevance and a cinema with more than 5 screens was a shock) will do as far as being able to have some kind of cultural touchstone moment that drives a sale or three. On the flip side someone might marry wallet bothering gameplay with a reasonable loop that gets many people on side.

Edit
Do these sales milestones even mean anything anymore?
Yes and no.

Yes in as much as it gives an idea of install base as we are still suffering the idea of both exclusive games and games that won't work on multiple systems (I can buy a DVD and region issues aside...).

No as in the market is rather different to what it was before (see the earlier parts of this replay for at least a jumping off point there) and I don't know what comparing to original xbox sales really tells me. I have previously contemplated some kind of inflation adjustment type metric but did not get far.

For the most part it is a statement for fanboys and investors in Sony or those looking to fund games for their systems. For the man on the street I would probably say as long as the sales are not so low as to see devs pull out (see Wii U, or in some ways more interestingly the Xbox family and Japan**) then it is probably more important to find a controller that fits you, a form factor you like and functions you care for, as well as maybe any "I really want this game but it is an exclusive anyway for no real reason" type efforts.

**The 360 did see some very nice things as far as shmups that the PS3 (and in many cases even the PC) did not but at the same time it missed a bunch of fluff RPGs ( https://gbatemp.net/threads/ps3-and-360-exclusives-a-discussion.360416/ , give or take NIS' last minute efforts and Ni No Kuni).
