Nintendo to pull their mobile titles from Belgium due to micro-transaction laws

H2x1_SmartDevice_FireEmblemHeroes_Book3_image1600w.jpg

As Belgium begins to crack down on games that use micro-transactions and in-game purchases, developers have been forced to change their games for the region due to their new laws. Meanwhile, certain other companies aren't as willing to make such accommodations, resulting in today's official statement made by Nintendo's Belgian branch. Mobile titles Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes will no longer be available for those in Belgium, "due to an unclear situation regarding certain in-game revenue models". On August 27, 2019, service for both games will end, and they will be removed from download. Not only will this affect the two existing titles, but any and all future Nintendo mobile games that use a "gacha" style system will avoid releasing in the country from here on out.

Due to the current unclear situation in Belgium regarding certain in-game revenue models, we have decided to end the service for Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes in Belgium. It will therefore no longer be possible to play and download the games from Tuesday 27 August 2019.

Players who still have Orbs and / or Leaf Tickets in their account can continue to use them until the service ends.

In addition, future Nintendo games with similar earnings models will no longer be released in Belgium.

We would like to thank all players in Belgium for playing Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes.

Anyone expected anything else from them?
Iwata is dead, and with him the Nintendo we all know and loved.
Just look at the twist Nintendo did, the moment the new prez was announced.
Mobile gaming, microtransactions etc pp.
Just thinkin about Mario Run makes me wana puke, and getting lobotomized so i
forget those shiny kid memories. :P

Just download teh hacked versions presumably.

doesn't work if the games require online to be active/connect to a server to play
I don't play any forced online game. If a game requires online connection to play or even launch, it disqualified automatically from my list. As someone else said, I have enough games in my backlog to last two lifetimes, so why should i bother with this kind of crap design?

So in the efforts of "protecting" their citizens, they now get to get the lesser experience of not being able to play those games, even if they want to.
Who could've predicted that the government nannying citizens was a bad idea way back when, when everyone was cheering Belgium on? Gee, I can't remember... Good. :toot:

Good, now hopefully more countries would follow making companies realize that this bullshit can't go on anymore. Bring back the 90's era of gaming
Most people don't want to pay outright for a mobile game. Games with micro transactions and things like timers are a lot more appealing to said people because it still keeps the game free if they don't want to pay for anything. The bill is footed by people who make in game purchases. For whatever reason people would rather pay something outrageous like $100 over time than $15 initially. Just look at the downloads for free to play (with IAP) and games with an outright price. Layton Curious Village HD has 5,000 downloads on Android because it costs money, and Layton Brothers (free with IAP) has 500,000 downloads.

Good job Belgium, these games were garbage anyways so they are not missing out, hope the rest of the world adopts these laws in some fashion.
And then all mobile games will be paid and people will be whining that they have to pay for things on a phone which isn't a gaming device and very few mobile games are actually console quality. Or all of the free games will be plagued with never ending ads.

I'm one of the few that never ever paid for a single micro transaction in my life. Not even a single one and i never will. If everyone would have done that to begin with we wouldn't have this mess with micro transaction filled games. I'm atleast not part of the problem but everyone else is

You're so special......

I am glad this is happening, maybe Nintendo will think before they try to stuff this leaf ticket crap into the next major AC title.

The one problem I have with gacha games like Fire Emblem Heroes, not so much Animal Crossing because it is a different type of game, is all of the tanks of heroes and the power creep that comes with it. The company will usually give one of the SSS Super Omega tank for free too and it will just trash 50% of the game.

It's bullshit. Nintendo could have removed the microtransactions features instead of removing the wholes games.
Fucking greedy EA! They simply don't know when to stop.

Exactly! Sometimes when you are outside or at some places where there is no connection or the connection is very weak, you wanna play the games but it requires you to be online and you can't play... That's simply anti-consumer and I have zero-tolerance for that design.

You know Japan, Korea and China will never go through with this since the game company there made fortune from those kind of game and have very big influence with government. So yeah, good for Belgium at least.
