Hi sorry I’m back, I had work and just a huge amount of homework, but let me fill you in on the story: I was having a sleep over at a friends house and I brought my switch, Wii, and laptop... I download smash for Wii and shovel knight for switch at the sleep over. I come home today to find out that he’s mad at me because of this a email AT&T sent (forwarded the email to me) I didn’t understand why this happened and what trouble I got my friend into so I asked the smart people of Gbatemp for some answers. And wow thank you all for filling me in and telling me how stupid I am, but in my defense I wasn’t thinking at the time... So I understand now...

(Also shovel knight was direct and smash for Wii was google drive, sorry for the confusion )

Edit: I will add the email to the og post to show this isn’t fake ;-;

So you downloaded a wii game off google drive and got a notice? I don't believe you. You already changed "legal file" to "wii and switch games" Post the notice, you could black out your personal info.
Done, happy?

Thanks for posting that but one problem, Google Drive is not P2P. P2P means Peer 2 Peer and the way you connect with other peers cannot be through Google Drive. That's a torrent.

Google Drive is cloud based and simply involves someone uploading it and then someone (later) downloading it. P2P you are both uploading and downloading at the same time. They're not the same thing at all.

It is possible though to get a torrent link through Google Drive that would make sense.

If it's his own ISP catching him nothing will work. They will know even if you're using a VPN.

You got that wrong, mate. If you use an encrypted VPN, like any paid service should be, your traffic is completely routed over that VPN. The ISP will see that there is a connection to some server, and probably also know that this is a VPN, but it is impossible for them to distinguish what you open and what you download as long as there's no DNS leaks. They just see encrypted data going in and out. That is the whole purpose of using a VPN. The way is like that.

Normally:
Your PC <--> your ISP <--> whatever you access and download. They can completely see every website you open, every file you download, if they wanted to.

With VPN:
Your PC <--> your ISP <-encrypted-> VPN provider <--> whatever you access and download. That means, technically, the VPN provider could see and log everything you do. Almost all of them say they don't, but you can never know, right... but your ISP won't be able to see it anymore. I have an ISP who specifically throttles traffic from Usenet, OCH and Torrent after some Gigabytes. With VPN it doesn't happen because they are not able to know where the traffic comes from.

Port 8989 is a often used for torrent software. So no, it's no Gdrive here. It's a plain old Bittorrent usage.
Also, if it really was torrent, then you brought that upon yourself. They're more after that because you're also uploading and sharing while downloading.

So lesson learned, nothing will happen. Just if you wanna pirate via P2P, protect yourself. VPN is the best option and preferable someone that doesn't log anything. Such as Private Internet Access, Mullvad and Integrity.st and a whole heap of others.

Private Internet Access have actually been in court to hand over logs, but they couldn't since they don't keep any.

Well. The mystery has been solved, OP downloaded a torrent from Gdrive rather than the actual file and that particular torrent was being monitored by a white knight company that logs and reports users to their ISPs.

hey so quick question, I was downloading a..... “completely legal” file and got sent an email from AT&T saying they know about it and I have a strike, what should I do?

you should immediately tell them to fuck off and that you are dropping them and going to another provider
the sooner they get the message that consumers will not tolerate their snooping and pettiness the sooner they will stop trying to enforce copywrong
they do not have a total monopoly (yet) so do not cave to them as if they do just go elsewhere

LOL. In Portugal, they don't care about it. No wonder America is so strict and mean. Yikes!

America is quickly becoming the land of massively protected corporate interest and nullifying consumers rights in the name of profit. Congress is basically a tool to anyone who gives them money like the RIAA, CRIA, MPAA or a content holder.

Seriously though, how can a guy download a torrent without realizing he's downloading one? You need a torrent client and everything. If your friend had a torrent client already then he was likely pirating already and you would have had to notice a new program opening to handle your download. If not you'd have to go out of your way to get one. Probably by Googling "how to open .torrent file"
