If he doesn't have any eShop stuff installed, that'd be fine, but unless his emuNAND is trash, it makes sense to move it over in the end, no? At least get rid of it so that it's not wasting SD space.
Many Gateway users just use .3ds roms and never bother with anything else, if that's the case here then there's nothing really worth keeping on the emuNAND. But moving it over is simple enough if he has stuff there he wants to keep. I just don't want to give him too many instructions at once, that might just confuse him, and he might not need to do it anyway.

He might have to do a ctrtransfer anyway if his emuNAND is semibricked. But we'll deal with that when it happens. It's not a hard thing to do, the only issue is finding an 11.2 or older ctrtransfer image.

Haha I definitly want to get started! As far i understand it the first step is going through the steps for on 3ds.hacks.guide, using the boot9strap for being on the down grades system. Once I finish the "finishing steps" I
Before you begin, you are going to need to get your system able to run Gateway again, so you can backup your saves. Do you have a game cartridge that you can use to update to a modern firmware? If not, there are other ways.

It's easier to do that once he's all set up with CFW.

There is no risk.

When you follow the guide keep your emuNAND as is (don't follow the "move emuNAND" section when it asks you to)
When you are all set up with CFW you can follow this to get back into Gateway: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-luma3ds-gateway-on-b9s.431691/
And use this to back up your saves to get them ready to be imported to the CIA versions: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zf4fkbe8fwen7ee/GWSE.rar?dl=0
If you still experience the ROM menu issue at that point and can't back up your saves, I can help you with that.
After all that you can finally ditch Gateway completely.

I'm confused about what part I update the sysnaan to 11.9, does that happen as I do everything else?

Begin here: https://3ds.hacks.guide/installing-boot9strap-(soundhax)

You update SysNAND to 11.9 Near the end of the guide, on the last page. Do NOT transfer EmuNand to SysNand when the guide says to, skip that step.

Well it was a steep learning curve but I got the cfw installed, and figured out how to converted my old .3ds games into CIA using godmode, and im able to get the games installed and launched. I dont think I'm going to worry about my saves, as I said I havent played any of my games in about 3 year and I would be restarting my game files anyway.

Couple of follow up questions since there is a lot out there for the CFW.

1.where should I go to figure out how to use my old DS backup roms?
2. Wheres a good place to get themes for anemone?
3. Where are good places for emulators for my other game backups?

Well, we’ve gotta remove your EMUNAND to free to some SD space. I’ll go over that in a bit. Short answer: backup everything on your sd card - copy it to a folder on your PC. Format the SD card using your PC, then copy everything back.

1. Use them just like before. Put them on your flash cart, use the flash cart.

2. https://themeplaza.eu/themes

3. I don’t use emulators on the 3DS so I don’t know.
