IDW and Konami announce 'Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game'

Get ready to cry out Snake? Snake? SNAAAAAAKE! out loud during board game night! IDW Games and Konami are partnering up to release Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game!

The game is designed by Emerson Matsuuchi (designer of the Century game series, Reef, and Specter Ops) as a cooperative tabletop game complimented with miniatures and follows the PSX's Metal Gear Solid plot. Players can sneak into the shoes of iconic characters Solid Snake, Meryl Silverburgh, Dr. Hal “Otacon” Emmerich, and Gray Fox and put their unique skill sets to go past enemies unnoticed in order to complete objectives across multiple campaign scenarios. The game is also said to feature "a highly dynamic A.I. system" and a sandbox gameplay where missions can be "completed in multiple ways and will always play out differently".

“I’m probably the biggest fan of Metal Gear Solid. Ever since playing the first Metal Gear Solid, it has forever altered the way I view games. The story it told was so memorable and the gameplay experience so rich that it has shaped my expectation of games as both a designer and gamer. So the opportunity to bring this masterpiece to the table has been an honor and dream come true. I’m excited to be able to capture the tactical stealth action that is the hallmark of the franchise as well as create a new experience and story for the Snake fans. Age hasn’t slowed him down one bit,” comments the game's designer Emerson Matsuuchi.

The game's miniatures will be designed by the sculptor Francesco Orrù, and will also feature art from Metal Gear Solid fan and comic artist Kenneth Loh.

Gaming media interested in playing Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game will be showcased at E3 2019 and during 2019 summer conventions Origins Game Fair, Dice Tower Con, San Diego Comic Con, and Gen Con.

Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game is expected to be released to the public sometime in 2019.

Are you looking forward to it? Do you think that the essence of MGS can be translated into a board game? Share your thoughts below!

I'm very hesitant to say "interesting", but that has to do with Konami. The way they treat their franchises isn't something I'd be proud of. Therefore, my stance on this is very similar to EA's remastering of C&C: "they've got the right idea, but I don't trust them to not screw this up".

Lemme explain: board games have come a long way since monopoly. Concepts and characteristics are shared more, innovating concepts get built upon and designers and illustrators get praise when they deserve it. Hence my comparison: both EA and konami understand that others know how to design a (video) game better than they do. EA has these C&C remasters made by former westwood studio employees; konami hires a known board game designer (honestly: specter ops is probably the best board game involving stealth movement on the planet). The question is: to what degree will they allow the designers creative freedom?

I'll be honest: I don't know anything of miniatures or the illustrations. To more heavy board gamers, this isn't a trivial matter but I personally have no idea just how well it'll carry the game.

Yknow what would make it even better? If it was monopoly
Okay, it's sarcasm. I get it. But really: to a board game connaisseur, this is like saying "this Sistine chapel...Michelangelo, you say? You know what would make it better? If it was painted by the Hello Kitty factory!".

I +1 that ???? and raise you with a  How does one mix a board game with an Artificial Intelligence system?

My guess would be that this is one of those mixtures. Meaning: some board games have an accompanying app nowadays. I've played escape room puzzles that uses (physical) cards as well as an app for hints, entering codes and ambient music, and I know there's one very innovative app where you have to use your smartphone as a pawn. In this case - remember: it's a co-op game - I would assume that an app will tell you at which point guards will start their tour, how many will come out once the alarm goes off and things like that. Something like that would be doable...but even there, mentioning this under "highly dynamic AI system" is pushing it. So...I don't know. But I'm really curious to see what he means by that.
I don't really get why everybody is bitching about this now. A lot of game franchises have board games, most just don't get on the front page of GBATEMP so you don't know anything about it. I really don't see the problem why people are bitching about this when most companies do this.
The problem with that is that they seldomly do the franchise justice. There are a few renowned board games based on television and movies, but video games themselves rarely get fitting board games (and honestly: hasbro churning out monopoly versions of franchises isn't helping out board games). Kind of strange, if you consider how interwoven video games and board games are (lots of board game designers end up working in the video game industry).

Konami seem to be pretty interested in the MGS IP lately. Hopefully that means we might be getting a new game/remaster, though I might be setting my expectations too high with that one.
We just got Metal Gear Survive. What more could you possibly want? I doubt you've even played it yet unless you're one of the lucky ~5000 people who bought it on launch.

I was in the beta and it was enjoyable to a degree. Survive was nothing but a spin-off though, not even in the main MGS series.

There's still plenty of avenues Konami can pursue with this, such as Metal Gear Rising 2 or a separate game altogether.
