Nintendo Files Trademark For N64

n64 classic.JPG

After the wild success of Nintendo's classic console rehash in the form of the NES Classic and SNES Classic, many fans were wondering when, rather than if, the House of Mario will release its next classic console: the N64 Classic. Well, the latter might actually become a reality!

As spotted by JapaneseNintendo, a Nintendo 64 trademark was applied by the Big N, including video game program, controller, joystick and TV game machine and more. While this by no means confirms that an N64 Classic is on the way, as companies usually renew trademarks to protect their IPs, there have been a few hints that the N64 will be next in the Classic line. Commercial success of the NES Classic and SNES Classic aside, last summer Nintendo filed a graphical trademark for an icon depicting the N64's three-pronged controller in a style very much akin to the NES Classic logo. Coincidence?

The application also makes several mentions regarding downloadable software, in particular mobile ones. As such, it could also be pointing towards future Nintendo-branded mobile phone games.

So what do you make of this news? Is Nintendo preparing for the eventual N64 Classic? Or is the company planning something entirely different, like an N64 Best Of compilation for the Switch? Share your thoughts below!

But no GB or GBC connectivity (such as unlocking more characters on Mario Tennis), or lack of compatibility on majority of games/ROMs, I won't buy it.

It's bound to happen, the N64 is the last Classic console that's going to be viable for a long time. GC/Wii would require too expensive hardware.
Sadly, if it doesn't have Banjo, it's no good to me. They might be able to work out a deal with Rare/MS for that, but they'd likely have to pay a lot of money in royalties which they won't want to do.

Nintendo’s version of the gb boy? Backlit gameboy color with built in games. Or maybe a rehash of the original gameboy advance? Isn’t it’s anniversary coming up?

Oh wait, the gameboy color has a 20th anniversary coming up in October.

This is nice. But im glad I still have my original N64 running pretty well, then I can still enjoy Rare games. Im sure they will never release those games again

They filed a trademark for the GameBoy and the N64 controllers eary last year, too. After the success of the NES and SNES it's inevitable.
Interesting.
If we get a GB Classic, I wonder what games would be in that; Mario Land, Links Awakening, some Pokemon, Tetris? I would hope a couple Megaman titles as well, specifically 4 and 5.
I wonder if it would have TV out support? Hmm.
As for a N64 classic, safe to guess Mario 64, both Zelda games, and Starfox. If they opt for multiplayer support, throw in Mario Party, Mario Kart, and Smash Bros. I would like to see Megaman 64, but I haven't seen it in any VC as of yet, so I'm not totally expecting it.
Definitely interesting to think about.

pixel graphics of the NES and SNES era look great today and the style is emulated in modern 'retro' styled games, as well as the old sprites being iconic these days, which is why the NES and SNES classic were successful. Even if you didn't live though that generation, it is still relevant in 2016/7/8.

The N64? even the most ardent goldeneye players struggle to get over the graphics these days and anyone unfamiliar with it from back in the day is just going to see some kinda of terribly made cellphone game, plus, Mario64, Zelda64, the 2 key titles that would be likely to headline the line up have already been rehashed relatively recently. Would we even get Rare games on it anyway? No Rare, No need for Mario and Zelda. No point.

Retro, for the mass market should stay 2D, in my opinion.

I have come to appreciate blocky graphics from that era fairly recently. I find them just as charming as 8bit graphics (at some point I didn't like those either).
However, low framerates can indeed worsen the experience. While I advocate purity when it comes to graphics, I can't say the same for framerates.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

This is the first mini console to interest me. I really hope this can be hacked to add the full Rom set & possibly the snes & Nes romset too and just swap the controllers around.
Hopefully the have the same ports as (S)NES (Wii Classic Controllers work as well). However, even if that's not the case: the N64 gamepad is a good NES and SNES controller!

I've held off on getting both NES and SNEs classic as my 3ds and psp go both do a good job emulating both systems. Along with my other hacked consoles.

But I'm very hopefully that they come out with a N64 classic, so many great games. Although I think my biggest issue was a lack of Rpgs for it. Quest 64 was pretty fun but apart from that, I can't really think of any.
As a SNESC owner I have to say that it is a big deal when it comes to a full emulation box as it runs up-to PSP/N64. If this N64 Classic Edition comes with the "never seen" proper N64 emulation, it will be a beast!!!

This will be my cue to finally inject some games like Jet Force Gemini and Turok 2! (that is, if those games are not included in the library)

Well, there's nothing that can be done about it, so yeah, bitch on I guess.

Nintendo could release an updated controller that doesn't suck. Sony did it. Sega did it. Just supporting Gamecube controllers would be enough, if they want to only include "classic" N64 controllers with the main unit. They'd just have to support memory pak emulation for Gamecube controllers or a separate slot for memory paks--they might want to do that anyways to cut costs. It's all very doable, and honestly I think it'd improve adoption.

Easier said than done; I don't see them ever doing this because Nintendo.
