"I found a random fw.img" is the last thing I want to hear, brb time to make a firmware image that bricks your console and put it anonymously on pastebin

I just wanted to let everyone know that you can now set this wonderful quote as your wallpaper with this image. Low-res laptop owners only.

It can be used to install DLC with a fake ticket. ;)

Yeah, but having to dump the NAND, install it to an SD card, format the SysNAND and have to re-format the USB HDD to install the games, yeah, still on the fence about RedNAND :P It sounds really cool, but I'll wait till there's a better dumper for 8 GB users.

I've finally got a wii u. It's now mounting a 4.1 fw. Looking around, it seems that I can mod my console on this fw. Otherwise, I could update to the latest firmware and use the temporary mod. I'm still not sure about what to do, i have got sone questions

- is nintendo banning accounts for using backups?
- is the "permanent hack" reversible, if I'd need to send it for repair?

I would not use the "permanent hack" aka the leaked "IOSU exploit" if you don't know what you do!
On the same note I'd say an update to 5.5.1 (the most recent fw atm) should be alright since everything is being developed for that!
But with 4.1.0 you've got one heck of a lot more potencial entry-points in terms of exploits.

TL;DR:
- Don't use the IOSU-exploit before Team SALT officially releases it an their tools.
- Update if you want (everything will work fine), don't update if you wanna stay on the "more than just safe route"! ;)

Update to 5.5.1, that has IOSU already.
Nintendo isn't banning anyone.
The permenet hack is reversible, just delete the games you used. It isn't IOSU.

Thanks to both, but maybe I used the term "permanent hack" incorrectly...what's this iosu hack? Judging by how you're talking about it, it looks like it's something new and untested. With permanent hack I meant the old hack, the browser hack I think

there are no permanent hacks on wiiu mode, even iosu will go away once you shut the console off.

well there is the ticket method to install games on the wiiu nand or usb but those are passed off as legit they arent homebrew stuff per say.

Only if you cheat online, Nintendo doesn't ban users for hacked games; the installations act as though they're legit.

OH wait so maybe I'm getting things a bit more right:

- iosu hack is a new hack not yet fully stable and tested, but (googling) I read that it will be useful to use loadiine with USB devices (which would otherwise be impossible to do)
- browser hack is not permanent (/ i will need to load it after every reboot) on any firmware, not just 5.5.x
- i won't get banned for using not-so-legit games

so
-if i'll update to 5.5.1 i will be able to do exactly what I can do now but it's less safe(there's been less testing i guess?)

right?

5.5.1 is completely safe, and what you can do isn't limited as it previously was; once you reach that version, however, it is prudent to blacklist Nintendo's update servers should there ever be a new firmware.

No it is as safe as older firmwares. The only danger from iosu currently is if you try using the unofficial unreleased version of wiiubru's redNAND with sig patches

Yes, except that it will be just as safe. Just make sure to set an update-blocking DNS if you want to be extra safe (but you will not be able to download anything from the eShop while it is enabled).
