No. Luma3DS has FIRM protect on by default, so it'll always keep FIRM0/FIRM1 from being updated by Nintendo. So you can update just fine. I've gone from 10.7 to 11.0 just fine, and that was when 11.0 was the new thing. If running Luma3DS it's impossible for you to install stock firmware. You have to go out of your way to remove it yourself, by using Decryp9 to flash back a clean sysNAND backup that doesn't have A9LH.

This is why we setup Hourglass9, as that always keeps A9LH, so you never have to worry about losing it if you don't remember if a NAND backup has A9LH. Or if you simply forget to use the (keep a9lh) option in Decrypt9. Before Hourglass9 was a thing, I would see a couple posts of people flashing a NAND without A9LH without using the keep a9lh option, and then complaining that they spent hours for nothing, when it was clearly their fault for not choosing the correct option in Decrypt9.

Now I'm kinda nervous that I chose the right options..... how can I double-check before I update?

Oh.... and two last things.... so, which files are absolutely necessary to keep so I can continue to boot my N3DS after all these hacks are installed? I have a LOT of un-needed junk now and would prefer to get rid of all this extra stuff I no longer need all over my card.

And.. after I fully update it, do I need to do anything special to perform a system transfer from a fully updated but unhacked 3DS... or can I just perform one as if neither of them were hacked?

can someone please help me decrypt9 doesn't detect any cia's over 1gb for me.
I'm not sure why it detect cia's under 1gb with ease but one's over don't work.
I use groovey cia to download cia's if that matters

Well, one quick way to tell if you have A9LH is to take out your SD Card, and try turning it on. If it just blinks a blue light for a short second, grats! YOU ARE BRICKED.

Kidding. Kidding, relax. It means you have A9LH set up properly. With A9LH, you need a file on your SD Card for it to boot. Which in this case is the "arm9loaderhax.bin" file. Which is Luma3DS.

Other ways to check. Turn it off, with SD Card still inside. Hold Select, and turn it on, you should now be in the Luma config screen. Turn it off, hold start and turn it back on, you should now be in Hourglass9. Turn it off, Hold Y, turn it on, you should now be in EmuNAND9. Turn it off, Hold X, turn it on, you should now be in Uncart. This is assuming you setup the payloads as instructed in Part 5, with Luma3DS.

If you also followed the guide, your Luma config should be as follows:
"Autoboot SysNAND"
"SysNAND is updated"
"Force A9LH detection"
"Show current NAND in System Settings"
"Show GBA boot screen in patched AGB_FIRM"

With these settings on, especially the Show current NAND in System Settings, you should see "Sys (then your system version here)" As opposed to "Ver. (your system version here)"

Now for the unneeded stuff, scroll all the way to the bottom of part 5, and there will be a nice image showing you what you should keep. :)

Then to do the system transfer, just make sure both are updated, then initialize the System Transfer, and you should be good to go.

Oh sorry, I should have been clearer. I know that arm9loaderhax itself is installed, I meant those other hacks/patches that prevent a system update from overwriting anything that would allow homebrew and CIA launching/install and other hacks.

D'OH! Well, I feel like an idiot how. How could I have possibly not noticed that?

Hmm.... only question about that is that I seem to have some duplicates of some of my homebrew apps, such as Decrypt9 and OTPHelper. I assume these came as part of the starter pack or whatever, but didn't use the default folder names that the separate downloads I .... downloaded... use. I know for a fact that I have two different versions of Decrypt9 because I launched a version that had a bug preventing me from installing that injected version of Health and Safety at first until I found the newer version I had manually downloaded later in the list.

But... I can't seem to find them when I browse my SD card. Any way to tell which version of what homebrew app I have installed and where?

EDIT: Oh sorry, one last quick thing I forgot to ask. Is it safe to do a format? The only thing I will lose are any CIA files I installed (since this was a blank 3DS and I haven't done anything else) right? I would like to basically have the firmware "start over" from a blank slate... but with all hacks intact of course.... before I start using it.... and should I perform the system transfer from this initial setup or wait until after I finished setting it up?

Luma3DS doesn't let you toggle on//off that stuff. It's on by default. It's a beginner friendly // noob-proof CFW. The only configuration options you are given, are the ones in the config menu.
Link: https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Options-and-usage

A9LH FIRM Protection explained: https://github.com/AuroraWright/Lum...notes#arm9loaderhax-and-firm-write-protection
As well as the standard features it has: https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Other-features-and-notes#standard-features

As for the Homebrew Launcher stuff, Decrypt9, EmuNAND9, OTPHelper, etc. Those won't run from Homebrew Launcher anymore, they need arm9 for that, that's why we use the a9lh.bin payloads at boot time for them. You can pretty much delete them all, except for maybe the EmuNAND9 folder inside the 3ds folder. I think. Not sure.

Also, those Homebrew Apps are inside the 3ds folder.

Yeah, I looked inside that folder, could only find one instance, not sure where the others are coming from.

Also, would you be able to answer the question I asked about? Formatting? I edited my post after you were already replying it seems.
Could always delete the whole /3ds folder, and just re-download the starter pack, and make sure you merge the /3ds folder from the latest EmuNAND9.zip, and just leave it like that.

EDIT: Oh sorry, one last quick thing I forgot to ask. Is it safe to do a format? I've done system formats just fine on A9LH systems, all a system format does is deletes the content inside the Nintendo 3DS folder. As for that, I don't think it really matter, guess you could just do it from that initial setup and be done with it. Though I've only ever done a System Transfer after I've setup the systems, though it shouldn't matter to be honest.

Stock//Vanilla//OFW 11.0.0-33. No. You need a hardmod on that system version, even if you have Homebrew Access.

Either get a hardmod, or wait for a solution to be found on 11.0.0-33.

I keep reading about hardmods.
What would that be exactly? (noob question of noob questions, probably)

I was about to buy a New 3DS XL with that firmware just now, so I'm curious to know what the options are :)

A hardmod, is a hardware modification, it means you have to open up the 3DS and do stuff to it, so you can get it downgrade.

Here is a guide on how to do a hardmod on a 3DS: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-noob-friendly-nand-dumping-2ds-3ds-3ds-xl-n3ds-n3ds-xl.414498/

Then after you have that setup, you would follow this guide: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Hardmod-Downgrade

You'll probably need an alternative homebrew entry point, in addition to the hardmod.

Basically, if you have a 3DS on that firmware, it complicates things, especially if you aren't good when it comes to soldering or don't want to open up your 3DS.

There's also this thread to find Hardmod installers in your area, they of course charge for the service: http://gbatemp.net/threads/list-of-hardmod-installers-by-region.414224/

Apart from that, you either wait for a downgrade option to be available on firmware 11.0, or you buy a Sky3DS+

A Sky3DS+ can only do .3ds roms, and you need a private header to play online, and you are limited to retail cartridge releases only. You'll need homebrew access to even consider playing out-of-region games on it. Which, I guess on an NA or EUR console, you'd just get the Freakyforms Deluxe .3ds rom and get that setup.

But anyways, those are basically your options on 11.0.0-33

Thanks for the extensive informative reply!
Hardmod seems a little too complicated and a Sky3DS seems a little annoying in use, due to the button and all.

Guess I'll hold off on buying that New 3DS then. Thanks again! :)

New3DS XL on firmware 9.5.0-23E here.

I googled a lot and found pretty scary stories about the downgrade being unstable on N3DS and people bricking their consoles.
However the posts were 5 months old. What's the current status today?
How can I safely downgrade to 9.2?

Thanks!

Pretty safe. Just do a system format prior to downgrading your system to 9.2, and you'll be fine. This is to avoid the issue explained here:
Link: https://github.com/Plailect/PlaiSysUpdater/issues/8#issuecomment-218588857

Now if you have saves that you want to backup, I'd try to get Homebrew Launcher setup, then use SVDT to backup any meaningful saves you need backed up.
Links: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-1-(Homebrew)
https://github.com/meladroit/svdt/releases

Then you would go through with the System Format, and start from Part 1 again. Don't skip any steps, and be sure to follow them correctly, and you should be fine.

Hi might be a silly question but i recently brought a n3ds sorted all the homebrew emunand ect prrfectly working on the 4gb original sd card, since then I've upgraded to a 64gb sdxc followed the steps on a sd card transfer usbimage tool and then partition programe, after i move the middle partition to take over the rest of the unallocated memory the sd card then becomes unrecognised by windows 8, but still viewable in the partition programme.. seems as if the hidden emunand is taking the main part of the sd and not allowing the rest to be found with windows..
Once formatted completely again its then viewable in windows.
Any help is appreciated!

Thanks! I followed the guide and successfully downgraded!
I have one more question: if I wanted to use another SD card (a 64GB one) instead of the original SD card (4GB), what would be a good time to do it? Before starting Part 3 (rednand, luma, ..) of the guide?
Is there anything I should take care of before using my new SD card?

Edit: Successfully installed al9h on my new SD card :)

Using luma3ds emunand on a9lh and i have a question
is there a way when booting the n3ds to press a button to boot to sysnand(without going to luma3ds settings and check force sysnand)?

also found this

GBA Save Game Patch
When you quit a GBA game, you'll be forced to SysNAND in every case.

hmm,so if i am playing GBA game on emunand and after i finish it will boot to sysnand?
