Thank you followed your advise and put on rxtools 2.5.2. installed fbi to sysnand and went into devmode and successfully upgraded sysnand to 9.2.0-20E. Just a few steps left now and I'll be finished once I get coldboot working. Thanks again for your help.
congrats you just completed the most dangerous step that most end level users normally do
the next part is easy you first you need hbc access in systemnand for this i would install cubic ninja cia (as browserhax is now dead on o3ds) then ninjhax it and use that to install themehax this link has everything you need (except for cubic ninja/ninjhax) [Tutorial] Installing rxTools Custom Firmware - (3DS and 2DS)
if you want to continue to use the hbc after instalation then you need ctrbootmanager (also in the link)

Sorry you lost me on the bit about installing hbc in sysnand and installing cubic ninja.cia. Do I goto Rxtools devmode and use fbi to install the cubic ninja.cia file to sysnand and run ninjhax from there to install themehax?

ok first you are done with rxtools 2.5.2 you can switch back yo the nightly (recommended)
get cubic ninja cia (google it) install it to sysnand
install ninjhax (hbc entry point) on cubic ninja
enter hbc run themehax installer (in link) from there
then install ctrbootmanager (in link) so you can continue to use hbc on your 3ds and autoboot at the same time
"and then:yaynds:"

correct if you want to play 3ds roms you need sky $90usd or a new 2ds/3ds/3dsxl/n3dsxl with 9.2 or lower

there are people "working on it" but it is not something guaranteed to happen it may never happen or if it exist/(comes to be) there is no guarantee it will be made public
also a lot of people believe smea (the man behind the homebrew channel) has access to a hacked updated 3ds . . . but this is speculation

Hey guys, I've got an 8.1J Sysnand new 3ds, Gateway, and Sky3ds. I was wondering if there was any way to boot into emunand on the 3ds boot. Having to go through the gateway menu by swapping out both cards is a pain. And if I did this, would I be able to run the installed .cias?

I can run BBM on sysnand through Sky and install the MSET .cia, but I didn't want to brick anything and be sure before doing so.

No, 8.1J N3DS can't use themehax, unfortunately, it's for 9.0 and up (and even if it could, Gateway doesn't support it right now). You're pretty much stuck with MSET downgrading, or booting through a game (Cubic Ninja/OoT3D).

Weird, I installed the 4.5 mset with gateway, but when it goes to load the emunand now, it's just a black screen.

is there an updated list around somewhere on compatible roms that can be trimmed at all?? The wiki for it is outta date and most of my games are newer than that list!

I seem to be hitting issues at every step. Current issue is when trying to install themehax the screen pops up with the A to install or B to cancel screen for like half a second and then I get 2 black screens. Launching it using Ninjhax 2.5. Its themehax 1.3 offline installer I believe https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-homemenuhax.398124/page-23#post-5717329 that I am using.
more like every other step lol
did you apply a theme them switch back to no theme first?

thats fine i appreciate it. hypothetical then for you though. If i use sky army knife or NDSTokyoTrim3 to try to trim the roms will i be able to revert them if something happens and it errors? will it tell me it errored BEFORE i go to load up the game and play it or is it literally trial and error with this stuff??

@The Real Jdbye, I thought about that and I have blank DVD's and Blurays but honestly after like 90 songs I just listen to it a couple of hundred times toss it out and burn something else or have like 2-3 CD's. Florida here the heat in the car tends to ruin the CD's after like a few months even commercial pressed ones don't last too long.
