Is a backup done via Gateway enough to restore nand in future via the testpoint method? I have a severe case of shaking hands, so the best hardmod I can do is the pogo-pin option. I wasn't able to find a local supplier of this, and the best I can get from ebay/aliexpress is these 17mm ones. I measured the space between inner lid and mobo with a caliper - it's 5.5mm. Can someone point me to a shop with international shipping or give me some tips how to securely attach the longer pogo pins to TPs?

You can still try to use the 17mm pogopins, you only can't close the case. For a temporary solution, this is fine. For a permanent solution, you have to find shorter pogopins.

to a pad, my original plan was to cut some holes trough kapton tape and mask them. Then apply some solder paste and wire and heat them up for about a second with my hot air gun at 150 degrees celcius. But according to gamesquest1 its easier to use a soldering iron :)

The problem with hot air is that it is harder to control where the heat goes. Since the pads are pretty close to another, you risk desoldering the previous wire when connecting the next one. Even kapton can't prevent this. With a soldering iron, you apply the heat only where it's needed.

Ended up ordering these ones. I hope that double spring won't cause problems.
i dont think they are double spings they look like they are designed to go into through holes on strip-boards/pin headers that kind of thing, so only one end should be springloaded, the other is for fixing it to a pcb......should actually make it easier for you making a board to hold them in the correct position

due to inattention, my 3DS XL was upgraded to some 6.x.x FW. Fortunately, I had a NAND backup and managed to do the hardware stuff. After successful downgrade back to 4.2.x, my SD card wasn't working anymore (error message "could not access ..."). Reason was some soldering tin on resistor array near NAND pinout. Solved that, everything is working fine except: my R4i Gold card is not read anymore. Starter card is working fine, Launcher.dat gets accessed but 3DS game card won't be detected (worked before upgrade issue). Any ideas?

China post is effing slow with those probes... is it safe to do a NAND backup via Gateway internal function? Can I flash this backup afterwards using the hardware mod (basically: is it really a 1:1 image)?

Hey i´ve done the hardware mod (gotta love the clk pad. . .) If i dump the nand twice (without restarting) the MD5 matches, but if i first start the system normally and then dump it the nand MD5 doesnt match the first dump (before the restart) is this normal?

yes its normal, the nand is written to on every boot, as long as it dumped twice with no reboot and the MD5 was the same your all good

Thanks, the mod was pretty fun to do actually. I might do it for other people (after some practice ofc) ^^

edit: Just updated to 9.2 and flashed back a 4.2 backup. Works perfectly!

So, has anyone figured out if the New 3DS also has its NAND access pins exposed like the old ones have? There's nothing on 3DBrew, as far as I can see.

I tried to solder my cable to a microsd adapter... Failed, not good at soldering. Is it possible to solder a USB cable straight to my 3ds and plug into my computer?

Nope, that won't work. You need to connect the 3DS to an SD host controller somehow. In the end, I'd say soldering the cable to a SD card adapter is the easiest way to do it, and also the cheapest if you mess up.

By the way, and no offense; you need to solder the other end of the cable to the pads in the 3DS too, and that's a way harder to get right. Is it really a good idea to take that risk if you feel that soldering might not be your game?

I've tried two different SD card readers, and i've soldered 3 different SD card adapters (to make sure i get it right). I get the same error message others have reported working.

However I can't get windows to recognise media.

When I plug the SD card directly into the SD slot on my macbook, i can see it using diskutil list. But obviously I don't have access to the necessary programs to read/write the nand.

Am I just unlucky with sd card readers? Or am I doing something fundamentally wrong when connecting them to windows?

Nope, that requires a bootrom flaw to bypass the RSA signature checking of the FIRM partitions.

Some infos:

The NAND and console IDs are stored in the encrypted NAND. A NAND image does only work on the 3DS, on that it was made. Each 3DS uses his own keys for NAND en-/decryption. So no NAND sharing. Only up- and dowgrading currently.

But be aware. The 3DS deletes all contents on the SD card with missing tickets in the NAND. Downloading a new game on the latest firmware and dowgrading results in the 3DS deletes it!

Even with the keys, we will have potential issues like bad blocks that need to be individually remapped per console if you were to swap nands, potential remarrying etc of console and components with keys like the card reader, cart reader, wifi boards to the motherboard etc...

Is the repair under the warranty? If so you are not allowed to open it else you'll void it and you have to pay.

And yes they will update the 3ds.

lol they have a bit of paint/coloured glue on the screws and if you don't use precise tool they can tell you opened it due to it's cracking and chipping on the paint. Pretty easy to avoid. If you can't do the stickers, then you probably should back off as thats the second easiest to the screws.

If it comes back together the same as it was, your right. Any little sign is visible to a technician, if you can't make it look identical to you it won't to him/her and generally from experience they don't care unless it's obvious you broke it...

Or it was full of those little German cockroaches or some other pest. I have sent many away for a customer and never had an issue ever with opening, just bugs like roaches that instantly void warranty....
