It's some sort of modified R4i (I guess as the folder the firmware comes in is Blue Card (R4i))

Download the 2.02b release from here and copy everything inside the blue card folder to the micro SD card for the blue card: http://www.gateway-3ds.com/downloads.html
Thanks. Then I can just put the ROMS onto the card and they will just work? Nothing special to do on the DS right? I had a CycloneDS but it's been so long since I used it I don't remember anymore.

Hey all!!

I just purchased a 3ds XL red with FW 4.2 on it yay! (funny thing was the blue one with the same 2012 date on the back had FW 6 on it.. odd)

Anywho, I have my gateway 3ds coming in the mail soon. few questions for ya.

1 - What is the max size microSD card that can be used for the 3ds portion of it
2 - Am I correct in understanding that when in gateway mode you do actually connect to the nintendo servers and update the FW from there?
3 - Can I use the SD card that came with the DS to set it up or is it best to leave that one alone and start with a fresh one?

THanks all!!

1. Not sure on max size. I know 32 for sure will work. I think 64 is max size.
2. No. You must first set up emuNAND. After you run the Gateway exploit, go into the Gateway menu and choose "setup emunand." This will create a 2nd partition on your SD card. This will let you update the FW to retail (currently 7.1) while keeping your sysNAND at 4.5 or below. Make sure you are in the Gateway emuNAND before updating. When you go into Settings you will see on the bottom right "GW3DS" as the version. It is safe to update then. If you see your regular FW 4.5 listed or below, you will update your system and be unable to use Gateway!
3. Use the SD that came with the DS. Its 4 GB, plenty of space. Unless you plan on downloading stuff from the eShop. Then you might want to get a bigger SD card to store more games. The stuff from the eShop gets saved to the SD card.

Awesome thanks for the info!!

I guess my main clarification was that when in emuNAND you do actually connect to the Nintendo network and get the FW from them.

Are there any current games that require a higher firmware (games that wont run without FWxxx syscalls? I have no interest in playing online

Yes, you connect to Nintendo and get the current FW, which right now is 7.1

Here is a list of all the 3DS games and what FW they require. http://3ds.essh.co/
I believe someone said that with gateway installed, even if you don't update the emuNAND to the current version, you could still play games that require a higher FW while staying on 4.5. From what I understand there's no software reason the game needs to be on a newer firmware, just Nintendo wants people to update so there is less piracy. The GW can spoof the games into thinking it is updated. I'm not 100% sure.

When I load into GW mode in 2.0b1 with emunand I can't go into the settings, it gets stuck at the 3DS animated logo screen.

Can emunand just not access certain functions of the 3DS, read a few posts searching that indicated a lot of stuff doesn't work on 2.0b1. Is there any way I can add a wifi access point at least?

emuNAND on GW 2.0b1 cannot access System Settings, Mii channel, or eShop. You'll have to have the 2.0b2 launcher, change your system settings, then go back to 2.0b1.

Do any of the online features work? I mainly wanted to use emunand for Fire Emblem spotpass stuff, but I wonder if that will even work. I can't access the normal DLC menu in game, it locks up and I have to restart the 3DS.

Internet features do not work in games. However, regular wireless connectivity will still work. I managed to locally pick up another user's data in AWBW via Spotpass.

Yes. As for the latter, look up its (ace3ds) save type.

Really? I feel like I've seen people say you can access spotpass on GW. Or are they just referencing <4.5 physical carts? Or are they confusing streetpass with spotpass? The only reason I went to 2.0b1 and updated my emunand was to get the fire emblem spotpass dlc. Is this not possible at all yet?

You can have spotpass with GW. Just not online multiplayer.

I tried to unzip the Gateway firmware 1.2 using the standard unzipping program in Windows and encountered a bunch of errors. Is this supposed to happen? The files in questions were all in /languages/filename and had a random Chinese character in them...

To use the blue card for DS roms, can I just drag and drop .nds files?

Could someone give me a simple step by step if I only want to use the blue flashcard, not the red one?

There have been cases, but it's 1 in a ton. It's probably an issue with your writing system, and if you can't get it working, your best bet is to wait until tomorrow when you get your adapter. Don't get too worried, I had issues with my card the first time I tried using it too...

Also, make sure you're actually in Gateway Mode. If you're not in Gateway Mode, the card won't be detected.

Ok so i went to get a reader and used win32 imager to put the image on the micro sd and it's still not detecting anything when i put the red card in. I tried with another micro sd that I had lying around (different brand and different size) still nothing. How did you solve your problem? Should i contact the site where i bought it from and see if they're willing to exchange it ?
