The pc market is less than 10% OSX. Apple is making most of their revenue in iDevice sales.
Apple =hardware
Microsoft =software
To get OSX in the market Apple has to ship a computer. Windows can be installed on any computer in the market with a disc.

when a companies market share is larger than anothers, which had been stated, then its net worth must also be greater... so that kind of nulifies your flashy statistics too... but i mean isnt the stock price more of an indicator of future progress and value? like in the 80's when MS stock was thru the roof ... it allowed them to become the giant they are today. so its kind of a valid point, granted, maybe not for this discussion.

When one says that market share is "up 30%," they do not mean 30% of the entire market. It means whatever share was held is up 30%. For example if it was 3% initially, "up 30%" would mean an end result of 4%. First of all, I would say the huge majority of all consumers do not upgrade their computers, regardless of make. It doesn't matter if its Apple or another manufacturer, they will ride what they have to the ground and replace the entire box when they feel it's necessary.

Second, if an OSX machine is replaced with another OSX machine that doesn't alter the market share.

I've encountered trolls before, but always fall for your traps.

But those who do are PC users. And yes, many do this.

You're speaking of just one machine, there are millions of these machines being replaced, which I assume contributes to the share.

If you're going the *nix route, then take advantage of the fact that it's not Windows or OSX rather than replicating the bloat.

How quickly you forget that OSX is in fact a Unix based operating system. Since most distributions have been around far longer than OSX. I'd say OSX is the copycat. I'd say Steve and Apple owe quite a bit of thanks to the guys at Berkeley and the thousands of *nix hackers around the world.

If those millions of machines are being replaced by machines of the same platform, then no, it doesn't contribute to the share.

Going to ignore the first part, as all I got was insults.

So, it is like a pie chart...?
That's more Macs sold, while many PCs are kept and updated. This would contribute to the share (in Macs favor) but would have no say as to their quality or dependability.

It uses snippets of actual UNIX code sporadically as the Mach kernel was originally built off a BSD kernel, and the current Mac OS kernel is built upon the Mach kernel. The parts used are under an open license, and also very, very minute in quantity; to the point of not even being relevant. Might want to check your facts before spouting topical knowledge you don't understand.

You are however correct in that the post has an error, as OSX conforms to the current UNIX spec and thus is part of the OS tree. I figured in the context it wasn't particularly prevalent that I mention OSX' exclusion, since it was mentioned later in the sentence.

the funny thing for me, is that this is posted on a primarily nintendo based site.
nintendo and apple have a lot of commonalities.
their hardware isn't superior to their competition, but they maintain loyal fans due to the fact that designers create an "experience" for the user.
apple products don't "feel" like any other, and people will buy them for that.
same goes for nintendo.

On topic: I have looked at the sales of macs in 2009, and I have found this site. It seems macs have been on the rise, but I sense that this is a heavily biased site.
This site seems to point out that mac sales have decreased this year, but it looks like old data.

Here is a person asking for the market share of Macs and PCs. It seems to be a very well informed answer, that clears any doubt that PC is still going strong, and will not be dethroned anytime soon. The clear truth is that PC can do anything a mac can minus little insignificant perks.

i mean people can compare specs and financial bullshit allday, but it comes down to what you prefer. When you look at the average end user experience on either platform, theyre nearly identical.
Word Processing = Same.
Internet = Same.
Pr0n = Same.
Games = Not same, mac owners just buy 360s (they own macs, they can afford to)
Photoshop and the rest of Creative Suite (flash, AE, illustrator) = Same.
Pro-Tools, Reason, and music creation = Pretty much the same, Mac trumps by a hair
PROFESSIONAL Film Editing = Same, tipped in macs favor (Avid and Final Cut are comparable, except Final Cut is way cheaper, requires no proprietary hardware other than the mac itself, and handles more file formats than avid,)
Customizing = Windows has more options.
Programming/Coding/Development = I dont know but my guess is Windows

Dude, there isn't any argument there... But why would a PC user want to. There is more software available on the PC than there will ever be on a Mac.

I could make the same argument for a different product: there's more software available on a iOS than android, why ever choose the latter?

The reason, obviously, is that quantity of software is not the defining factor in the quality of the platform.
