The technology they're going to use is probably this.

Yep, I second that. a screen with some kind of lens-thingy film on it.
Your probably wrong. It'll probably be this or this.

I'm sure those have already been posted in here but whatever.

I'm too excited for E3 now. Hopefully that new pokemon game is a complete twist on the series for the new console.

Stereoscopic rendering is not 3D. When do people eventually learn this. VR is 3D but not SR. Besides SR only works with a few people. And without special glasses SR doesn't work at all since you need filtering. How else are your eyes supposed to know which of the two rendered images it should use? Exactly, there is none. Filtering on the screen is worthless since each of your eyes needs a filter not both eyes together. Your eyes are also not "interlaced". So physically this is nonsense.

Since there are a few companies that've developed displays with some kind of filter on the screen itself, my guess would be that this isn't as "impossible" as you say. Unless you're an engineer with greater skill than all those people who've been working on these problems for so long, now.

There's an article on a display from Sharp here:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/12/3d_illusion/

Apparently your eyes need to be at about the right place to perceive the effect (I guess because the two distint images are reflected by the filter in different directions), but it's some progress.

Not really, it really seems like this stuff will only be useful for "lol my game is in a box" type games

Knowing Nintendo, they will show it off by putting it unneedingly into games.

i already plan on waiting until june to see what nintendo does, but i better not have to play zelda by tilting the handheld back and fourth

Really. There always seem to be people willing to step up and (lacking any ideas themselves) bash everything and anything new that happens to come along just because it isn't what they're used to.

If the rumours that this unit could be nearly as powerful as a Gamecube are true, then the 3-D depth effect could be used in conjunction with the type of 3-D graphics we've seen in games since the move from 2-D to 3-D animation. Imagine a port of Mario Sunshine (it's the next logical Mario game to port to a handheld, so I imagine we'll see it eventually) with that kind of 3-D depth to the screen.

It just adds a new dimension to playing. Sure, there'll be people who use it as a gimmick; but overall I think there are some awesome uses for this.

And there always seem to be people getting all giddy over anything Nintendo brings out, even if they have no clue how it will be used. Like i said, it could easily be the stupidest, gimmickiest thing ever. Neither of us know how it will be used, no real use fighting about it until june. If it's just used more like GCN type 3D, then thats fine, feel free to shove it in my face, but if it does turn out to be like that crappy little game in a box 3D thing, then i will be laughing in your face when it's announced. All we really can do is wait.

IT'S NOT AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE
Sony has been building momentum with an aggressive advertising campaign, so Nintendo announced this earlier than planned. Ninty want's to remind everyone that they are the true innovators and that sony will likely stay years behind ripping off their innovations.

Also this will be followed by the next gen home console next year as that is how they've been doing it, people who realize this will probably not buy a ps3 either.

If it's GCN-level 3-D animated graphics combined with a depth similar to the Real D stereoscopic effect, I'll be quite happy.

Well not exactly its still in the DS series of systems just like the DSi had some camera games this is just like an update with a few lame 3d games liek the few lame camera games the DSi has

This comment is saying that because the PS3 is in the playstation series of game consoles it is a PS1 with minor updates :|
To you and all those that don't understand, please realise that this is a whole new console. Apparently it will have graphics that rival the GC, plus it's on a smaller screen. I'm guessing the processing power will be increased too.

It was about time for Nintendo to announce a new portable system.
The DS lasted almost 6 years ( in all its interactions ).

So for starters, to address haters that just got a DSi and complain about a new handled to soon.....STFU ( I rarely use that word, but it's really appropriate here).
The DS was innovative, in its implementation of the technology, but not in the technology itself. It was far less powerful then the PSP and made that way in order to be inexpensive.
Never the less, because of its unique combination of touch screen and dual screen, we saw fresh, innovative games, and in spite of all the HATERS ( I can still hear them...why, why dual screen ? That's useless ! ) it went on to become one of the most successful systems of all times.
And it wasn't because of the hardware, which was already underpowered 5 years ago, and now it's just plain outdated, it's time for next generation.
So why release DSL, DSi and DSi XL ? Why not I ask ?
Each year people need to buy a new DS, either because they never had one, or the one they own gets broken/stolen/scratched and so on.
Now as technology becomes cheaper, Nintendo is capable of perfecting the system by adding features, or making it slimmer or bigger , or even just adding new colors, all of this while keeping the price low.
So if at this point I need a new DS ( because mine is broken ) why not get a DSi XL ? It has a bigger screen after all ? But of course nobody is forcing me to buy one , if I'm happy with a DS phat, nothing prevents me from enjoying the latest games.
This sick people that feel betrayed because every year they have to buy the latest interation of their iPhones or DSs should STFU, it's their problem if they can't keep control of themself. The hardware revisions are for people that are going to buy a new system anyway, so why not getter a better bang for your bucks ? I don't have a problem with that.

Now we got more HATERS saying that 3D is gimmiky and will never work......yeah right, I've heard it all before ( the touch screen, duals screen, the motion sensing of the Wii and so on...).
Now those HATERS look forward to MOVE.........enjoy their iPhones......can't wait for Natal.......such hypocrisy......
We are talking about Nintendo, they will do the right thing.
Besides who still thinks that the DS hardware is adequate for this times ? Nintendo will publish their next Zelda, Metroid and Marios on the new handled, like it or not ( I bet we' ll like it )....so eventually, slowly we will move to the next platform, as newer games won't be feasible on old hardware. Eventually everybody will get one and forget about the DS !

More idiots complaining about the name......how many times do we have to go through this......it's temporary, and even if it is not, we will get used to it over time, and maybe even find it cool, who knows ?

It's time for a next generation handled, I just wonder what took it so long! I'm all for a change...........

Indicative of fanboyism. How is the touch/motion controls not a gimmick? Anytime I'm presented with a d-pad option, I end up taking it. I love the 3D is not a gimmick...only when Sony does it.

So explain to me how exactly the touch screen makes Ace Attorney a worse game ? Would you please elaborate ?
And Broken Sword ? And Dementium ? Professor Layton anybody ? Would they all work better whit a D-pad...? If I'm a fanboy ( which I'm willing to admit ) you are a one dimensional, narrow minded conservative who lives in the past and never looks up to the future to welcome innovation.

It's not a gimmick because it makes the experience much better. Motion or touch control is not always better, but in many cases it is. The 3D seems a gimmick, but who knows what it'll be in the future. It's certainly interesting though, and in case of the 3DS it'll be more affordable than a brand new TV.

Just got my DSi XL, which means I am not going to get this anytime near release. However, I am really excited. I really want to see what Nintendo is going to do with this. Hopefully a good time to buy would be either when the second iteration is released or the new Pokemon games are. Historically, in the last 2 generations, the gap between a new console release and a new Pokemon game was from 1-2 years. Also logically thinking, the thing will cost at least as much as the XL if not more, which is what I think Nintendo will go for. They still want to keep the XL in for the wider demographic they were aiming for, which I don't think really care about 3D.

You do realize that Ace Attorney was originally released on the GBA and then ported to the DS, right? Touch wasn't necessary for gameplay improvements at all. It was the same with the screaming at the DS. There are very few games that are touch exclusive and even then use touch right.

Are you saying that Ace Attorney is better on the GBA with button controls then ? Even the latest ones where you can manipulate and examine 3D objects ? And also you'd take Duke Nukem Advance over Dementium the Ward ?.................Hmmmm...I don't see any logic in this, maybe you are a fanboy of the d-pad ( which was probably the first biggest innovation in the gaming world also by Nintendo by coincidence
