... First, it's not porting unless they have the original source code- which you cannot get for any games but open-source games. Even for games that have been made free (GTA 1 and 2 for example) you CANNOT get the source code. Thus you cannot port it. Thus to get it on the DS it has to be RE-MADE, as in COMPLETELY REDONE. In re-doing it you have to create software which would (and did) take a professional company with hundreds or thousands of employees several YEARS to make. Then you can call the game created by the process a 'clone' or a 'remake'.
But to call it a port is just bullshit, excusing my language.

Oh, and to wiowao- sure it wouldn't take three years to PORT a game (which, once more, can only be done with a select few games), but it sure as hell would to REMAKE that game. There are basically no developers willing to spend several years (of full time work) remaking a game for no money and for a system which would be obsolete and unused by the time the game was released. (Keep in mind that I am talking about modern games, much older ones are a little easier because there is no need for excessive textures, models and a complicated 3D engine.)

And yes, I am aware of 'Bob's Game', but that game was not a remake, it was his own IP- this is why he feels he can make some money by selling it. He wouldn't remake a large game because he would not have any rights to it and thus could not make any money on it. In fact, remake projects are often shutdown by the companies owning the IP.

If you want further evidence of why remaking a game is hard- look at OpenMW (a remake of Morrowind). It's taken years for it to get anywhere (leaving it a little out-dated), and that's with many people (and a community) working on it. Plus it's open-source, meaning that the market for it spans across every operating system. It is a large project, and every system (possibly including the DS, if it can be scaled down enough) will later have the gane ported to it. You just don't remake large games for a console. They are made for Windows or Linux first, then ported. Go onto another forum, get a game remade, then come back here to talk about porting it to the DS.

In short, almost nobody on this forum (who has the ability to) is interested in remaking a modern game exclusively for the DS. And those who are (if any), are not organised enough or are simply not interested in the same game as the others.

EDIT- oh, and just to clarify- a modern game is pretty much any game released from the Nintendo-64 onwards.

Does having the dos demo of megaman x count as a source o.0?

No. The source-code files are the original files used to create the game. These are never released unless either the game was open-source from the start, or became open-source later.
Pretty much no game company have ever released their source-code files, excluding id Software who released the source code for the engines of doom and quake 3 (this is why we are able to have a port of doom on our DSes).

Basically, if a game has been sold at any time in stores or online over the last 5 to 10 years, it is not open-source. If a game is released for free online, it still may not be open-source.
If you want to find some open-source games that could be ported to the DS, check out this Wikipedia page or browse through sourceforge. Or check out some individual games like Battle for Wesnoth (a kick-ass strategy game), Nexuiz (a great fps with excellent graphics) or some of the open-source remakes and clones like FreeCiv (Civilization) or Frets on Fire X (an absolutely kick-ass clone of Guitar Hero).

There are tons of fun open-source games! Just look around and google a bit and you will find something you like.

You can't port Starcraft, you can't port Warcraft and, by the looks of it, the cave-story port is dead due to Pixel requesting it be taken down.
Sorry about that.

Super Metroid is already playable on DS.

Also, all I want ported to DS is Starcraft, Warcraft II, and/or Cave Story.
It's more or less playable, but the graphics and sound are all screwed up.
And those I don't think ever will be finished/done.

I'd really love to see one or maybe all of the Fancy Pants Adventure games ported to the DS. They're flash games, yes, so I don't know how feasible this would be since you can't get flash support on the DS. I'm guessing the game would have to be rebuilt from the ground up not using flash.

That having been said, these games are ridiculously fun, if you're into sidescrollers (think mix of Sonic & Mario with great physics and a sort 90s MTV Oddities attitude).

Creator's site: http://www.bornegames.com/

Judging from the dude's site, he seems to enjoy making free games. Whether he'd be interested in making a DS version of any of his games, I don't know. However he does seem to own a DS judging by his review of Bowser's Inside Story. That having been said, I didn't ask him if he'd be up for porting Fancy Pants, mostly because I don't know much about coding games, so I'd sound like a douche and wouldn't be able to do much with it even he did say yes.

Now I'm thinking if there were enough people interested in wanting this on the DS, and some of these people were programmers willing to help the guy recode the thing, and maybe some other people clicked that paypal donate button, then we might get somewhere with it. Hmmm, I think I'll make a thread about this.

In the meantime, in case you haven't seem them:

That's my list of games that NEED to be ported. They should be ported. It would make even a hater of Nintendo a believer.
In fact, if someone would teach me the easiest way to port these without having to go through years of code, i'll do it.
I'm dead fricken serious.

One could always try to code for another system if they found the DS to difficult to program.
There's high hopes that the x86 emulator is the door needed to play popular DOS games and at some point people could be even inclined to write launchers for games that don't necessarely meet all requirements of the emu (the sound blaster emulated is damn pretty I must add)

The Mame/Mess source documents all types of processors including NDS's arm7 and there's a couple couple of good Dev'ing stuff around for the DS. For those with less time and technical capability at hand there are game makers such as XtenDS around and other libraries that will make it easier (or not >_

Once again, these cannot be ported as we don't have the original source code. There is no way to do it but to create those 'years of code' and remake each and every game.
Sorry to be a buzzkill, but people need to understand that 'porting' simply isn't possible for non-open-source games and that 'remaking' or 'cloning' a game takes many years and a whole team of committed, experienced coders, graphics designers, QA testers etc.

Or some drunk dudes at an IT college who accidentally do something like that.
