I'm borrowing a friends TP tomorrow to hack my wii. It is still on 3.2U so i should be good to go.

There are sooooo many programs and apps to put on the wii its really overwhelming. Ive been wanting to do this for a long time, but with this recent breakthrough with the usb loaders I am deciding to take the plunge.

I just need some advice on what are the MAIN things i need on my wii to run/install stuff without owning TP, brick protection, and anything else I am missing that is important.

As of now, I have on my list:

-Twilight Hack (0.1-beta1?)
-Homebrew Channel (version 1.0.1?)
-WAD manager (1.2?)
-One of the USB loaders... I'll probably just start with the default one until I have more time to read about all the custom ones people have made.
-Starfall/Preloader... (I've read starfall is out of date? Preloader better?)

...Foggy on...

-Any Title Deleter?
-Gamma? is this only for playing burned games?
-some form of cIOS updater?

Please list anything I'm missing or that you feel I need. I've been reading FAQs and stuff for about a week now, but I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up with my wii.

As of now, I have on my list:

Twilight Hack (0.1-beta1?) YOU NEED THIS NOT SURE WHICH VERSION JUST PICK A GUIDE AND USE WHATEVER ONE IT TELLS YOU.
-Homebrew Channel (version 1.0.1?) THATS THE LATEST VERSION I BELIEVE.
-WAD manager (1.2?) 1.3 IS THE NEWEST
-One of the USB loaders... STICK WITH THE ORIGINAL UNTIL YOU GET COMFORTABLE INSTALLING STUFF ON THE WII THEN MOVE ON TO ONE OF THE OTHER ONES.
-Starfall/Preloader... PRELOADER CAN FIX BRICKS I DONT THINK STARFALL CAN YET ON 4.0

-Any Title Deleter? NOT REALLY NEEDED UNLESS YOU PLAN ON INSTALLING TONS OF CRAP
-Gamma? is this only for playing burned games? YUP PLAYS BURNT GAMES
-some form of cIOS updater? ALL THIS INFO SHOULD BE A GUIDE YOUR FOLLOWING TO UPDATE TO 4.0 JUST STICK TO ONE GUIDE.IF YOU START READING OTHER GUIDES YOU WILL GET CONFUSED REAL QUICK.

Use this WAD Manager:
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=149502&st=30
(mirror 3rd page(?))

With that you will always know what IOS you are using(while messing with wads), maybe then you won't become a super noob like most noobs here.

With this WAD Manager you don't need to use ANY other WAD Manager, if you read a guide that tells to use a special WAD Manager, figure out what that does, und use this WAD Manager instead

I don't need a TP game to fix bricks with preloader, right?

I dont think so.You should just start preloader up and make it go to the homebrew channel then reinstall whatever iso you deleted that caused the brick or uninstall the wad the caused a banner brick.

I've never had to recovery from a brick so im not sure 100% how it works.

Hopefully boot mii comes out fairly soon and every one can be done with preloader.

No. Should you ever banner brick your wii of mess up the system menu, you just hold reset while powering on. That will bring up the preloader menu. From there, you can directly boot into the homebrew channel (and so skipping the system menu) to restore the system

I would suggest you follow the Softmii guide. This guide includes preloader install, and enables region free disc channel loading of backup wii games (with CIOScorp install). It's really easy to follow and the files they provide are all safe to use.
Once you have done this I'd recommend installing the most recent emulators for NES, Snes, SMS, Sega, and GBA systems if you like classic gaming. Without SMS you won't be able to play Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. You can convert game files to an iso using IMGburn (which is free), and burn the entire library of Nes, Snes, and Genesis games onto a single dvd to play off your wii. These can all be found with relative ease on wiibrew.org. (not the roms-the emulators) Also, if you want you can install wad versions of most programs. Use google or try wadder.net.
With the CIOScorp installed you don't really need backup laucher gamma 0.3, since backups will play through the disc channel, but I have it installed anyway.
I would install a version of the gamecube backup launcher because some gamecube backups need to be started with a patch and thus won't load through the disc channel.
With mPlayerCE you can play DVDs with your Wii.
GeeXbox lets you play video and audio files from a usb device.

I think that about covers it.

Alright, I got homebrew channel up and going and I installed preloader, snes9x gx, and dvdx.

I tried burning some roms to a dvd with nero in ISO 9660 mode, but when i try to read it with snes9x it says invalid disk. Anyone know whats up?

do i need to update something? I think im going to get a USB loader going tomorrow.

i don't think you should need an update to run emulators. I don't know anything about Nero, but on IMGburn you just use build mode and basically select all your rom files and then save them all into a single iso file. You can fit every legal backup for Nes, Snes, Genesis, and SMS game for NTSC-U onto a single DVD, which is pretty awesome, assuming you own all 3000 of the original cartridges. Just organize your folders (when you build the iso) so you have them split up, because this is what your emulators will read when you choose read DVD. Once you have an iso file, then just use write mode to write that iso file to a DVD. I would assume Nero can do the same thing, but I don't know exactly how it works.

You don't need mii installer/extractor unless you want to copy mii's from another wii or send your mii's to someon elses wii. Never used wad extracter 1.0-WAD manager seems to install and delete wads just fine. I think Gamesave extracter is an app for copying gamecube save files from an sd card to a third party GC memory card (I don't think it works with first-party). You can use Gamecube Saver for 1st party memory cards. And custom IOS36 rev10 is the latest version of Waninkoko's custom IOS and is needed for USB loader to work properly I believe, so I would install that for sure.

oh, another thing, what exactly is a wad? I can't find where I was reading about them before. if someone could just breifly explain the basics or point me to a thread or soemthing that explains it.

If i use that WADinstaller with the IOS chooser, how do I know what IOS to use?

If i try to go to my mii, news, weather, shop, any of those default ones, will it mess something up? do i need to update something for them?

I have the cIOS v10 with the 1.5 USB loader that I am going to, hopefully, get running in a bit. (I ask about that wad stuff because this loader has a boot.dol and a .wad file with it so I'm confused. Do they just make channels or something

A wad file is a channel that installs to your wii. Like a virtual console game or whatever. Before you install any dodgy wads I would make sure you have preloader installed. A bad wad can brick your wii (but with preloader you will be able to recover). With respect to USB loader the boot.dol goes in a folder called usbloader (which goes in the apps section on your sd card). once this is installed you can access usb loader though the homebrew channel if you want. If you install the wad, then a channel will be installed onto the main system menu, that forwards to the usbloader folder in the sd card, so then you can start the program without going into the HBC.

A wad file is a data container. They can contain all sorts of things, from IOS files to Channels. (reference:http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Data_Containers#WAD_Files )

The wad that you got with USB loader is probably a forwarder channel, though I can't say for sure without knowing what you downloaded. You can simply run the USB Loader boot.dol file from the Homebrew Channel if you don't want to install said wad.

On System Channels: you can update these without going to 4.0 by using WiiSCU: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/WiiSCU . I've only used it personally to restore Shop Channel functionality on SysMenu 3.2u.

If you already have cIOS36_Rev10 installed, you should be good to go. Other advices:

1.Don't mess with AnyTitleDeleter. You really don't need it until or unless you break something. ATD mostly breaks things if you don't know what you are doing when you use it.

2.Burning DVDs - Just use the latest ImgBurn and set the speed to "AWS". If you have a decent burner and good media you don't need to burn at 4x,2x,etc.

3.If you are fooling with installing wads, try and understand the guide you are following to know which IOS to select. Example - If a guide says to use a wad manager based on IOS16, you know to select that IOS. If it doesn't specify, you should probably select IOS249 (most common slot for your installed cIOS).

4.Consider Softmii as optional. Read up on and understand what cioscorp actually consists of before deciding on using it. It isn't required for backup launching or using USB Loader. That said, it is a decent enough package if you want backups running from the disc channel.

I think i got everything up and running that I want to now. I'm copying games to my hard drive as we speak. I just tested out mariokart for a while and it works perfectly. I'll have to add my external enclosure to the wiki. I got my dvd of roms working as well.

I want to thank you guys for helping me out and not just screaming noob. I did a lot of research and reading, but all this info is still just so overwhelming! I may dabble with WADs later, but there isn't really anything I absolutely want that I don't already have.

Again, I am really appreciative of your help.
