Sony is reportedly developing a new handheld console

plasysation.png

With the Nintendo Switch being such a runaway success, and having a successor console on the way, it looks like an old rival might be throwing their hat back into the ring. An insider report from Bloomberg states that Sony is looking to contend in the portable gaming market, and thus, are in the early stages of creating a new handheld device. Supposedly, the concept builds upon the PlayStation Portal, but would, "function as a standalone device like Valve Corp.’s Steam Deck". Bloomberg notes that the release of such a PlayStation-branded handheld would be "years away", or could never be fully realized.

The product is aimed at expanding Sony’s reach and contending with Nintendo Co. for the portable gaming market, according to people familiar with its development. It would also counter any potential mobile hardware from Xbox maker Microsoft Corp., which is working on prototypes in the category as well. Sony’s portable device is likely years away from launch and the company could still decide against bringing it to market, the people said, asking not to be named discussing private plans.

With exclusives? ---> nintendo switch 1+2.
WIth multiplatform titles ---> any handheld pc of your choice...
The market is booming with them.
SO idk what you call "good" but yes most of them arent even oled/hdr and good performance.
I wouldn't count handheld pcs or even a switch. They aren't really handheld formfactor. The switch is a bit more gray zone but I find it too heavy.

Just in time for the Switch 2! And here's me thinking Sony was tired of getting it's handheld teeth kicked in. Sony is having a really bad 2024.
There was Barbiehammer, and now Glicked.

Sowitch would be fine too, one in the left pocket and the other in the right pocket

If they do something Switch like I can see a potential. But if it's an exclusive handheld that requires Sony studios or even others to create ports or a handheld exclusive, I don't think it's gonna work.
It will be the same fiasco from Vita times. It makes no sense to create ports or handheld exclusive games nowadays with the development taking forever and costs. I don't think we gonna have a new one from Sony. It is not gonna be a VITA/PSP 2.

Back in the days Sony used to be one of the most admired. We don’t know when or if it may be again. Today is not the day.

It's always how Sony operates, they are always late to the party, or bail out, or never finish something properly and refine the experience enough for people to choose them first or make Sony devices among their top selections. The company has a serious lack of vision, but also as I noticed with almost all their products they sell: They don't use their own products, as is evident from their Noise Cancelling Headphones or other products. They always have a terrible user experience and features that cannot be disabled, and even if they have a toggle to disable/enable them, they often don't work, etc.

And this is the same problem I foresee for their handheld: It is competing with too many, already superiour alternatives and Sony fucked off from the handheld market a long time ago instead of further investing into it and perfecting it, they let other people do the job for them. Now, they believe they can jump back into it, but they don't even know where to begin.

Nintendo does what Nintendo does, which is extremely low-end hardware sold at markup prices with good first-party exclusives, which is how Ninty makes cash. The other competitors go for medium-end/low-high-end hardware with an open system and thus have versatility. Sony has neither of these. Their first-party lineup is mediocre at best, and even if some will disagree with me on the quality of their first-party lineup (which is subjective anyways), nobody can disagree on the next part: their first-party lineup is meagre. They simply don't have enough first-part titles in their lineup to justify the same exclusivity for their console that Nintendo can & does. And again, those that are in their lineup just aren't as highly regarded or remembered as being good as Nintendo exclusives, it's just the reality of it. And then the next problem: They also cannot compete with the versatility and open nature of the SteamDeck or its alternatives.

All in all, this product will likely flop and they will abandon it again due to it performing bad in terms of sales, because they don't realize what the market wants and needs, they just try to copy someone else's success without understanding what made it succeed in the first place, and for both the Switch and the SteamDeck, the reasons are vastly different, and Sony can cover neither of those reasons, but knowing Sony, they are also too afraid to do anything new and find their own success strategy, simply wanting to emulate the success of others as many cowardy businesses that don't understand their customers do.
You know, I was going to make some of the same arguments (especially Sony chasing others' - particularly Nintendo's - successes without understanding them, such as with the PS Move and Playstation Classic mini), but you already said everything that needed to be said about this. And I just want to say that I completely agree. If Sony doesn't outright scrap the rumored plans, their handheld console is doomed to fail anyway, just like every other knock-off second-rate imitation they've created.

People can't pocket a switch or handheld pc, making them bad home consoles.
They're all handhelds. Whether they're pocketable that's another thing.

Handheld - designed to be held in the hand.

If you mean pocketable then yes, they're not. I wouldn't expect anything like PS Vita for example anymore, that's just not happening in this day and age.

It's amazing how much crap people can write about a non-existent console. I was annoyed at the way a simple rumour was being spread around as fact at first, but now I'm actually finding it useful as it seems to be a good way to get people to expose their biases.

I guess I'll be the first to say I'm pretty excited if this ends up happening. The PSP and Vita are 2 of my favourite systems and I'm curious to see what Sony comes up with if they go that route again.

You actually think Nintendo has a winning formula ?

They are as clueless as you. WiiU was bad luck. Switch was dumb luck. Switch 2 is going to be anybody’s guess.

As someone who had an Xperia Play back in the day, and still has it in a drawer, fuck that. They did nothing with it. Just Crash 1 and... that was it.

Underspec'd it significantly on storage space (384 MB, I think) and RAM (128 MB, I think). You HAD to root it, and could never really work around the RAM issues without killing SD cards prematurely, sacrificing it for swap space.

Ask me how I know. Even for Android 2.3, that sucked. And I "upgraded" from a Milestone X. I hold onto smartphones for ages until I finally have to give in and upgrade. Usually the battery goes first. I got lucky, being able to upgrade from my Play to the m7 sooner than most I've had because my carrier phased out their CDMA network, and fortunately that Play was a CDMA phone. The RAM issue made it untenable.

They certainly won't back this one. They didn't back the Vita, either. Shame. Minus the paltry storage, RAM, and low-res screen, there were definitely things I liked about the Play. None of that proprietary rubbish Sony is well-known for. Decent stereo speakers for the time. The controller was really nice for its size. Great buttons. The two circle touchpads worked nicely, but the lack of tactile feedback made them unpleasant to use for any fast-paced games. Packed a very nice battery with the best battery life I've ever had from any smartphone at the time.

It also gave me my first taste for the rooting, tinkering, and flashing custom roms of Android. I would keep doing that until 5.0 on an HTC One m7. After that, I no longer had time and stopped giving a fuck wrt Android and its features, for the most part.
