I'm aware that hardware mods for the form factor new 3ds are extremely limited I'm curios though hypothetically if you made a custom mother board designed to work with elements of the new 3ds could you upgrade the system giving it better memory / ram / ect by essentially making a custom console with the 3ds software

Due to the 3ds’s proprietary nature (meaning that parts of the motherboard cannot be bought by just anyone) and the fact that the 3ds’s proprietary parts may now be discontinued due to the console’s age, this would prove extremely difficult. It may be possible to take a preexisting motherboard and upgrade the ram, but again due to the proprietary parts, an upgraded ram module would be hard and expensive to produce, not to mention all of the software that would need to be adapted for the upgrade, and individual games would have to be patched to support it. Currently your best bet would be to simply emulate the console, which, if you have good specs, would play the games better than on real hardware. Overall, this currently isn’t possible in the 3ds form factor.

On second thought, there is the Aya Neo Flip DS, which is bigger and not exactly the same form factor as the 3ds, but it could technically run 3ds software through an emulator like Citra. It has increased ram and performance as well. The only issue is that you’d have to dish out $800.

RAM is like the only off the shelf part for the 3ds line lol. While increasing the amount of RAM would be useless without changing the software (which is doable!), you could always replace it with a faster module, which would be easy compared to trying to make an upgraded CPU or something like that. Hell, nintendo already went and did it thrice.
