The PlayStation Portal is getting cloud streaming support soon

streamythingy.png

Sony's remote play device will be getting cloud play support soon, following the announcement of a new beta release of the Portal's system software. If you're subscribed to PlayStation Plus's Premium tier and have a PS Portal, you'll be able to trial out game streaming on the device, allowing you to play a catalog of PS5 games off of PlayStation's servers. There are some specific limits for the beta period, as streaming PS4 games is unsupported for now, and a handful of other features won't work.

  • Stream select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
    • Over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog, including Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, will be accessible on PS Portal via cloud streaming*
  • Streaming up to 1080p/60fps**
  • DualSense wireless controller features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, speakers, touchpad (emulated on the touch screen for PS Portal), and motion sensor***
  • PlayStation Plus Cloud storage
    • Save data and game progress can be stored up to 100GB and will be automatically synced with your PS5 console, making it easy to switch seamlessly between local and streaming gameplay, and between multiple devices.

You're telling me that the PS5 streaming handheld... didn't have streaming support? WTF could it even do before?

Is this implementation like a newer version of PlayStation Now or are the games all free if you have PS Plus

Stream from your PS5 via Remote Play.

Although if I'm honest, the more surprising thing is that we've had few returns at my retail job from twits who don't do any research when they're spending £200.

Even when the PS5 becomes actually affordable and has some games worth playing only on it, I still don't see the appeal. Especially since you have to be hooked into their premium "service", which is another, what? $50+/month on top of $150-200 for the thing? Then again I've become adverse to subscriptions in general.

I guess if you're already locked inside their walled garden there's no reason not to drop another portion of a rent check to get a glorified gaming tablet. That exclusively stream games from your alabaster living room monolith.

Just give us a real handheld, Sony. I still give my Vita TV more love than you ever did.

you're not supposed to do THAT to an electronic device buddy

on topic: I'd like to give this a try, but all cloud streaming stuff is usually not supported where I live. And even if it were, the gameplay conditions would probably be awful, laggy and whatnot. At least the only time I ever tried a cloud streaming console, it didn't feel anything like playing a regular game on a local console.

Look, what one does with their game consoles behind closed doors is not anyone else's business.

OT: Remember trying to get the Steam Link box to stream correctly to the upstairs, and even that lagged while on Ethernet. Can imagine the headache trying to get the Demons' Souls remake running on the go from the cloud, even with solid wifi and gigabit speeds. We aren't there yet.

I don't really care for the PS5 as it is, and this isn't changing opinions.

I have absolutely zero and even negative interest in cloud gaming…

Basically:
-Locked to their subscription system, per month subs + pay more premium if you want 4k res
-Limit to your playtime like the one in geforce now
-No modding
-No backing up your save data
-Rip game preservation
-If their server is dead so is your entire game library and most importantly save data
-Lag because of constant internet requirement

Imagine a Steam Deck with chiaki4deck and *only* chiaki4deck, without the ability to do anything else with it. That's what it was - just a Wii U GamePad for your PS5.
