I've just about ran out of reasons to defend Sony

I grew up on console games and I've had every Sony system and mostly enjoyed them all, but now they're just becoming a PC and there's practically no reason to not game on PC and while I bought a pretty decent laptop a few years ago that could play most games up until recently I have no considered myself a PC gamer. While I started on NES and have always loved Nintendo Sony consoles have always been very special to me. Also 20 years ago consoles and PC's were totally diffferent. Nobody was playing a PC on anything but a PC monitor and most games did not support a controller. Today it's easy to play PC games on a TV and every game supports a controller. So there's two things that made consoles and PCs similar, but now that Sony decided to release a console upgrade in the middle of a cycle that's out of the box digital only and INCREASE the cost by $200, you may as well game on PC over that option.

And then I just looked at latest scene releases for PC, God of War Ragnarok is already one of them. A game that game out a little under two years ago. So let's say next gen PS6 is digital only, why would I not just buy a PC and I only have to wait two years for any Sony exclusive to come to PC? It feels like Sony is saying just buy a gaming PC it's better in every way and don't bother with our console anymore, and if PS6 is digital only that's what I'll do.

The whole point of buying a console I thought was to get something there you couldn't get anywhere else, and I'm not seeing what that is if Sony is going to make all of their games for PC and go digital only.

Don't see the point of even buying new consoles, im fine with ps4

I'm still gaming on PS4 way more than PS5 which I just bought this year and have exactly 5 games for. I think that PS5 has been somewhat of a disappointment and the problem is going to get worse with higher and higher game budgets and games that will take longer and longer to make especially on PS6.

Sony is probably thinking about how expensive games will be to make so why not go digital only and get a bigger profit of the games sold cut out the stores. A retail store gets about 34% of a game sold.

Same here, I would never buy a console unless it could be hacked to play backups. Every console and games playing machine I have ever bought has been hacked and the only time I bought online games from the net Xbox360 and PS3, my consoles were banned for being modded so those games were unplayable. Once you get burned like that you soon realise it's better to have a physical copy of the game that requires zero internet access. The few games I bought for Android no longer work on updated Android software, so a PC and hackable consoles is the only way I will ever play games now and I would never buy a game ever again that requires an internet connection or server (which can go offline at any point) to play it.

Originally I was into PC gaming (also online gaming was free then), then when ps1 came out, I changed to consoles when PC's kept coming out and you needed the latest graphics card to play a new game, but now you need to "pay to play", games are download only, servers go offline, micro transactions - wtf are they all about!

I still play on xbox/xbox360/ps2/ps3/ps4/vita/switch/psp/android and PC and don't need to buy games for any of those. If PS5 gets properly hacked on the latest firmware, I might consider buying one and downloading the games - but until then, it's PC for me if I wanted to spend some cash on a decent rig + I could use it for other stuff.

I believe there's some agreement between Sony and the hackers to never hack the latest firmware, however they're about to come out with 7.61 which would be games up until August of 2023. There's usually always like a year delay.

They're making games require internet for license checks, part of a consoles OS. They're discontinuing old libraries of digital content leaving you without access if the content isn't stored on your console. They're building PC's, calling them a home video game consoles, and charging PC prices. Used consoles, I've been there for a loooong time as the last brand new console I've bought was the Xbox 360 S (trinity). I'll buy a brand new actual PC before a game console. I'm not in the market of modding consoles for the sake of free warez, but protecting my old physical libraries... that's where the line in the sand is drawn, and companies have overstepped their boundaries in this digital realm.

I'd argue there's no reason to defend any big corporation at all. Most of what they do is immoral scum, and aside making yourself a fool by "defending" them, they don't need your free "defense", they more can afford lawyers and whatnot, lol.

To go back on topic, yeah, I haven't seen the point of buying a console since, like, the ps3 or something? Basically 90% of games on consoles are on PC too (and cheaper usually, mind you), and what few exclusives are there, at least for me, don't seem really that appealing (also, whenever applicable, emulation says hello).

The only like current gen console I own is a switch, which I really only use for a bunch of exclusives or for those few games I'm interested but my crappy PC can't run, and even then, I didn't really buy it, a friend of mine did, would lend it to me when he wasn't using it, and due to barely playing with it much, plus any emulator on PC just being a straight upgrade, one day he just goes "eh, just keep it, whatevs", lol.

Why would you want to defend them in the first place? I'm sure they can defend themselves. I bought a whole bunch of craps from Sony and never felt like defending them whenever they came up with any dumb ass idea or releasing stupid stuff. I have both 1st model PS5 as well as the slim, VR set, oh yeah and a portal. I even bought the Astro bot controller because I like it.

If you want something and can afford it, then go ahead it's your money. Do you really think any big companies would care about the so called fan boy or "loyal customer"?

Same.

However, I do want a PS5 to hack it and to play Astro Bot and DBZ Sparking! ZERO (I'm a fan of it).

I've bought PS5s so even if the firmware is too high I'll just resell it.

Gaming isn't the same as it used to be. The last "console" era was probably the 360/ps3, and even those 2 you could argue against, after that they became just pcs with a handful of exclusive games which fortunately changed a bit soon after. Excluding Nintendo ofc.
So yes, not only there's no reason to get the latest consoles, to me your just buying a pc with a ridiculously closed ecosystem -the big trade-off here, even if the hardware seems cheap in comparison to the overall price of a decent pc- that'd be significantly difficult to bypass (with an exploit like hen/cfw) and if possible at all (Xbox systems)..

Sony should take a page from Microsoft and open the console up a bit since hypervisor sandboxing... start a "productivity/creator mode" much like Microsoft "developement mode" but not b!+¢# out and retract the content like Microsoft... could bring more indie developers/crowd to the scene... that's the exclusivity Sony needs.

Rootkits were a wholly sufficient basis to never buy a Sony product again. This is a company with a track record of depravity in business practices, way beyond the norm.
Yep and if you have ay of these CD's below, you will infect your PC with a rootkit if you try to play them on it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_compact_discs_sold_with_Extended_Copy_Protection

There's also been the same sort of thing with computer games having rootkits, just google that for more information.

While it was absolutely a stupid move on the part of Sony, it has been nearly twenty years since those CDs were sold and I doubt the exploit works under current versions of Windows at all.

(I expect CDs with the exploit might even be rare collector's items by now.)
