Almost nobody buys physical discs in Japan anymore.
Some titles are released as a download only.
Main advantages of removing the disc drive is the reduction of manufacturing and distribution costs for games (more money for Sony) and the block the sales of secondhand games (you don't own the game anymore).

Unfortunately all trends are towards discs going away eventually. I specifically bought a PS5 Slim FOR the disc drive so I'm glad I have that, but it's crazy to me that even after the disc drive being removed the PS5 Pro is so expensive. I've seen figures that adjusted for inflation the PS4 Pro would cost about 524 USD if it came out now and that thing HAD a disc drive. This trend is just slowly moving me away from console gaming as a whole. I'm just tired of buying something, and then a better model that makes me buy an entirely new system comes along.

Its a niche product, but those in that niche buy a lot of games.

The ps4 pro was also an upgrade from a less expensive console in the first place though. I am a bit surprised that sony didnt find a way to get the ps5 pro to be closer to launch ps5 price though, but what can you do? Its not as if the og ps5 is a bad machine.

They actually removed the disc drive, finally developers won't release physical games that are fancy licenses /s
For the disc drive, you have to pay an extra $80 which sounds like a huge ripoff.

You're exactly right. I've run out of shelf space so had to limit myself a lot otherwise I'd be over 200 discs by now.
Having physical media is more important rather than paying for a game that is tied to both your console and your account. And by the time that game disappears from the store, then you wouldn't be able to play it.

I much agree with this. Without the physical media, there's a good chance that the things you own will just disappear someday. It's something I always worry about when buying something digitally these days. Had it happen with an anime back in the day, and now I refused to watch something unless I have it on blu-ray or DVD so it doesn't disappear if I like it. I think people are more open to this right now because shops for PS3 and PSP are still up. I'm sure if those ever shut down people will think more about this.

It could also drive up the cost of games for consumers as Sony is the exclusive distributor of PS DD.

When I got FFVII Remake back in Aug 2021, I got it for £20 physical (PS4 copy with PS5 upgrade) when as it was £60 on PSN.

Yes DD has sales, but I tend to find outside of maybe grey market sites, in the short term physical generally gets cheaper quicker.

Yeah. But they buy a lot more physical games than do the non-niche PS5 owners.

No Xbox fanboy is buying a PS5 Pro. No Switch owner is buying a PS5 Pro. The only people who might are PS4 owners who haven't made the jump and current PS5 owners who want to spend $700 so their digital games that run at 30FPS can run at 60FPS or that want to spend $820 so both their digital and physical games that run at 30FPS can run at 60FPS (like they already do on my ageing but upgraded/upgradeable PC).

The PS4 Pro was a compelling upgrade (as was the upgraded Xbox a year later). This... isn't. Having the most powerful console didn't help Xbox this generation. Neither is this minor jump in performance for $700+. And minus the disc drive and the plastic stand, it is a joke as a "Pro" model. 2024 is shaping up to be one of the worst years for Sony in gaming.

What was sony smoking? the $1000/gram opium, evidently. Primarily off the back of the $50k/day kabuki courtesan in the board room meetings.

Wanting to be digital only just lets sony speedrun banning users even faster.

I completely agree. 799 euros for a console are too much, then let's add the fact that it doesn't even feature a disk drive, and we are good.

Like I said in the PS5 Pro announcement thread... I QUIT!

80 or more if the scalpers got ahold of them all and are selling for 140+/-.

$ony is pushing people to accept the digital format by making the disc drive separate/optional and even worse if it's overpriced due to scalpers. If at least the digital purchases were permanent, but it's more like rentals.

Crappy "Pro" console without a disc drive built into it.

Parents: "Why are there two PS5 Slims here? One has one stripe, the other has three... 🤔"

I couldn't get a PS5 when I wanted one (fuck scalpers) and bought a gaming laptop instead. I want a PS5 Pro but all my games are on my Switch and laptop already. Too bad for Sony, it's too late now.

The PS5 Pro is supposed to "target" 60fps so even spending $700 doesn't guarantee a stable 60.

Oh, and the PS5 Pro looks like the PS5 Slim with three stripes like why.

I don't actually hate the design. It makes previous skins compatible.

Sony made the determination they could release an incremental update at an inflated price and enough people would buy it, and they will. The removal of the disc drive was always inevitable because the physical games and used games market isn't as lucrative for Sony compared to a completely digital store front.
