They should do this for all platforms. I have at least half a dozen ghost Facebook accounts from various bans over the years that are just cluttering up the interwebs.

Doubt there's any grand conspiracy...they just seem to be reclaiming some server space.
Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure! It's about the space!

You realize that this will affect lots of great YouTube channels (especially for gaming) that haven't made new uploads for more than two years but still have great material ,right? And since YouTube's double standards isn't a thing, I bet this new policy will also affect YouTube's approved channels (and yes, I'm sarcastic).

Did NOT think about that.

Yeah. I do not want this. There is this one genius polyglot who died recently, Moses "Mouse" McCormick. I do not want his channel to be deleted.

Finally I can create back the original gmail account I had.
Fucking Google are horseshit when it comes to actually helping people directly, to this day I haven't been able to contact them to reenable my email in any capacity.
I might as well just wait for it to get nuked and then I'll create it again

Space is possibly an overly simplistic reduction. Maintaining dormant accounts for things also means maintaining your probably high availability fault tolerant database, distributed at that as well and at massive scale is a far cry from backups that you and I deal with where copy of it on a hard drive somewhere is enough.

I am sure there are some bonus perks like oh no magic rule change we are going to have people guess at.

Alternatively you get what you pay for. Eventually the venture capital money runs out on these platforms and they go paid or otherwise just die and we repeat the cycle, at least until the info becomes so relatively small that it can personally hosted somewhere at basically no effort.

Good if true. I made so many accounts I lost count and access because I didn't save the emails/passes. 😆

Amazon should do it, too. 😅

Eh... What is the possibility of deleting the wrong accounts? Also, isn't two years too short?
Two years is plenty of time.

I read PayPal charges users a fee who don't use their account? That's ridiculous. I've deleted my PayPal account since 2021 and happy with it.

Oh, it is real, but for specific regions: https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/what-is-the-inactivity-fee-help947

Inactivity fees are not charged for PayPal account holders in the US. The inactivity service fee applies only in certain countries in the European Union, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Fuck you, PayPal. 🤣

This isn't actually new. They have been deleting old gmail accounts since gmail was first created. My old email account, which got overran with spam because of all the GPT sites I used, and I stopped using, hasn't worked in a decade.
They may have just reduced the inactivity period before deletion. Maybe it used to be 3 years, or 5 years, it doesn't really matter. If you haven't used the account in 2 years, you probably aren't using it anymore.

That is a problem. I'm sure that anything worthwhile will get reuploaded, but the original uploaders will lose out on potential ad revenue, and views, like counts and comments will be lost. Then again, if they still pay attention to the channel and care about ad revenue, it's not difficult to keep the channel from being deleted.

If I owned the system and I had to pay for the server space of a service that is not useful to anybody (and from which I can't profit because it is not being used), then yes, it would be about space, it would obviously be about space.

There is enough obscure but valuable stuff* on there, people losing a game of beat the bus and the like that I don't know if I can get there for that.

*and if not valuable at time of writing then later on. What was that recent one with someone just uploading some footage from a circa 2002 US high school (now as far away as the 1980s were at the time), and before that someone got a flim camera and went out on 1980s or something New York streets, or that guy that signed up for every news letter, pamphlet and such from silicon valley in the 80s and 90s so got not only the stuff you and I could trivially get from a magazine scan but also all random stuff that actually makes up the era.
Granted my personal favourite still has to be art 1992 aka the great and the good of central Pennsylvania are not quite comprehending furry not quite porn. Look at the clothing in the background there of the housewives answering phones.
