First-party Xbox games to cost $70 starting 2023

xbox games.JPG

As reported by IGN, Xbox plans to hike the prices of its first-party titles in the new year. Titles like Forza Motorsport, Redfall and Starfield will cost $69.99 USD at launch in 2023. While there might be differences in regional pricing, Xbox didn't provide the details for other countries.

"This price reflects the content, scale, and technical complexity of these titles," a Microsoft spokesperson told IGN. "As with all games developed by our teams at Xbox, they will also be available with Game Pass the same day they launch.”

In October, Phil Spencer hinted at such a price hike and we now have a confirmation; at least when it comes to first party Xbox games. For the time being, the pricing for Xbox's other offerings such as Game Pass has remained unchanged and will be the case until the end of the year.

I find it interesting that so many are acting like a $70.00 price point hasn't been a thing before.

For comparison:

Super Mario 64 – $66.99 (Source: GamePro #97)

Wave Race 64 – $64.95 (Source: GamePro #99)

Those were N64 Games. N64 was known for being costy due to the carts being built needing a huge cart for the time

Replace "expensive chips" with modern R&D and higher employee costs. N64 games were made by a handful of people, some of these modern studios employ dozens of people working on a single game for multiple years. The $70 price point complaint is pretty weak unless it's a really shitty shovelware/indie title. Artists/Voice Actors/Motion Capture/3D modeling isn't cheap.

I wouldn't worry too much.. as it says, first party games will be affected. I only have like 6-9 series x games, so I don't think people will have to worry about most. I bought far more from the bc component, several bc from xbox one and the 360.
my series x is pretty much for bc, exclusives, and homebrew. my main console now is the ps5. they've (sony) has crushed most of the bugs with the system, which microsoft has failed to do over the past year or so.

The N64 was more expensive to build carts for due to the ROM chips being more expensive than the SNES and needing MORE space to fit said game

ALOT of Modern games perform like shit, use loot boxes, and is filled to the brim with glitches, or are awful. Then people get mad. you can see why people are pissed to pay more for a game. If it was WELL MADE, People are willing to pay the extra like the N64 games

The N64 was more expensive

You aren't schooling anyone on anything the majority of the world already doesn't know, we've known exactly how the cost of an N64 cart breaks down ever since EGM made a nice pie chart article on it. What isn't spent on "chips" is now spent on R&D and Marketing.

The $70 price point has been hit before, with cart games and disc titles. Stores are free to mark up MSRP as they see fit if the demand for a game is high. Impatient people paid Gamestop $70 for GTA San Andreas on the PS2 back in the day, $20 over MSRP.

The N64 was the first system to hit that price point and it isn't the last. I'd complain when the average price of all games goes up, first-party titles are nothing to complain about.

Its going to be a trend where most AAA devs are gonna beef it up to 70 bucks for a single game. Were complaining because the game is shit, Were complaining that the game is filled with microtransactions. Were complaing that there getting less fun.

70 bucks for a AAA game with little substance and is a forgettable, rushed, experience where you have to wait on it for it to be enjoyable 6 months after the release. Reminds me of the Coke price hike where soda went up a few years ago for money.

tbh, I don't think many people on temp will be affected, yet they'll complain about. most of temp are pirates, so what does this have to do with them? I don't care if you pirate or not, even new games. what I do have a problem with is the vast majority just leech shit. they claim not to have the money for a $5 donation for devs, yet they have enough disposable income to buy a next gen system, and stick it in the closet for, in some cases, years. it makes no sense. it's like the people are looking for an excuse not to contribute.

You're complaining based on a tired rehashed assumption, we've all heard those complaints ever since paid DLC was invented. The answer is always the same: no one has to own a game on release day. If a AAA game is worth $70 people will buy it and those that can't afford them wait for sales. There are other games that can be played while waiting.

I pay for most of my games, Those of witch being physical on current/last gen because Digital is fucking awful. I only get roms for old ass consoles because there just easier to grab instead of dumping them.

Unless its PC. I just buy them

I've been all digital on the xbox due to deals, and the switch, because I was afraid of dropping stuff. my hands do shake sometimes, and I don't want that to be happening with the switch while picking it up. I almost dropped the pokemon switch already. a part of me wishes I was all digital on the ps5, but I do like having a disc slot. something my friends and I do is determine which has the lowest price and go with that. it doesn't matter if it's digital.

This boils down to intrinsic value vs perceived cost. Now let me remind you my point is that $70 games have been a thing since the N64 days and are nothing new. People will pay whatever they think an item is worth at the time of purchase, simple supply and demand.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the recent Xbox console has a lacklustre lineup of games, an issue even Spencer noted in a recent interview (I believe) - yet they're going to raise the prices of what few games they have?

What? Why not draw more people to your struggling console by lowering prices, compared to the competition? Making your console a relative 'better deal' than the PS5?

I love that Gotham Knights is one of the example images given, when the game basically launched at half price because of its review scores. I'm not too surprised by the price increase, but it does feel like bad timing given how few AAA games have been releasing in a complete, polished state lately. I count maybe three this year?

Pushing people more towards GamePass.

At this point, I guess we can expect $80 and $90 in a few years. Maybe by 2024 or 2025.

So more reasons why to not get a xbox? Oh well. I guess ill go back to PC
PlayStation games are $70, too.

Switch games are still $60 (MSRP), but I'd bet BotW2 will be boosted to $70.

Sony are already 69.99 with first party PS5 games.
I can't wait when standard edition of PlayStation/Nintendo/Xbox games cost $99.99. 🤮

Meanwhile, on PC if you wishlist a game via Steam, when it goes on offer you get alerted. Done that for a couple.

Xbox with GamePass and online play is what many have gone with rather than buy the games themselves.

Sony tried that too with the messy PlayStation Plus tiers. Didn't work out too well.

Yes because everyone knows that the executives are the ones making the games, same way Bob Iger personally writes and films every Disney Film
let me hint you in since you can't seem to take the hint:

the executives could have lost a little yacht fuel and took the difference hit rather than leave the burden of cost to the consumers.
