Sonic Central broadcast happening tomorrow, as fans plead for SEGA to delay Sonic Frontiers

In lieu of showing up at a specific Summer press conference, SEGA will be taking to hosting a new Sonic Central event. The broadcast will detail the future projects, partnerships, and events regarding the franchise for the rest of 2022. It'll go live on June 7th at 9am PT/12pm ET.

This will be going on amidst the recent gameplay showcases for Sonic Frontiers, SEGA's next mainline Sonic game. Following IGN's exclusive reveal of two new trailers, concerned fans took to social media, where the hashtag #DelaySonicFrontiers began to trend. The first trailer focused on the open-world level design and general gameplay and was received fairly negatively, with the second trailer highlighting the combat, which caused even more outrage, ranging from fans claiming Sonic's animations were too stiff and unfinished, to the world being lifeless and empty, jokingly compared to fanmade "x series in Unreal Engine" videos.

Right now, Sonic Frontiers is slated to release by the end of this year. Sonic Origins, which is a collection of the series' most beloved retro games, will be out at the end of the month, on June 23rd.

Guess I'll just look for fangames projects for that "Open world" Sonic game I've been always thinking of.
Frontiers don't be seeing too promising, looks more like a mod to me, imo.

I remember ages ago seeing some dude basically porting Peach's Castle from Galaxy in this, like, open world Sonic engine and it was so cool, wish anyone would like port the map of Crazy Taxi on some fan Sonic engine or something.
It was rad driving down them streets in them crazy taxies, imagine running all over the place as Sonic, heh.

Hmm, let's see what sega's next move is. Delay the game or proceed as planned? It feels weird to see something like this. More like sega doesn't know what to do with sonic in 3D anymore. Is no shame if that's the case. Ask for help or ideas. I seen square enix release demos for Octopath traveler, bravely default 2 and that triangle strategy game. Just to have a survey on opinions and such. It seems like people feel shameful or something for doing that. It's not the worst thing you know.

They could "you know" go back to the awesome 2d that everyone loved and add a good story/well made boards and most would be happy. (I AM LOOKING AT YOU TOO MARIO.) 3d does not make a good game. A good game is good in 3d or 2d. It depends on the game not the graphics. When will companies figure that out.

I understand why people are asking for a delay, but I’m not convinced a delay will be enough to fix what people are complaining about. Like, Halo Infinite was delayed a whole year and I hear it still came out lacking. I’ll still give this game a fair shot though.

I mean, albeit the game looks interesting, it doesn't feel like a Sonic game to me at all. The combat more than unpolished seems to me way too complex for Sonic. Sonic should feel simple, as complex as using homing attacks and spin dashes being enough for the base player. Even Mario built everything until now on a simple gameplay with more complex moves added for expert players only.

Then the world itself is yet again trying to copy a Nintendo Game and, as a result, doesn't feel like Sonic at all. Yet another Sonic game that feels like a Sonic spinoff.

I keep thinking at some point people will just realize that Sonic was never a good game, and if that isn't the case, it was like 2 games out of 30 that were decent.
list of good sonic games:
sonic 1 2 and 3 with knuckles (cd is debatable)
adventure 1 & 2 (excluding adventure 1 dx. Due to the port causing a lot of issues. and even worse on the pc version via steam since it ports the xbox 360 version, which was a port of the pc cd version, which is a port of the gamecube version, which is a port of the dreamcast version)
sonic unleashed (Fans have reconciled with the werehog and realize it's not that bad, it's just not fit for sonic)
sonic generations
sonic mania
sonic rush 1 & 2
Sonic colors ds & wii

Frontiers kinda looks like Sonic was dropped into Xenoblade Chronicles.

@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)

when SD cards/microSD write speeds drop below a meg a sec, they're usually on the verge of dying
