I was raised on windows my whole life, Hate apple and OSX (love the look, hate their practices) and yearn for Linux... As much as I like Linux my life revolves around the bug ridden shackles that is windows. when it comes to my pc I do EVERYTHING there is to do with a pc I video, photo and sound edit, 3d animation, AI workloads, learning game development and of course pc gaming. Some of this stuff can only be done in windows. and if your REEEEALY adamant you can get some games/ apps working in linux but lots fall short, theirs also Windows store games/apps ( i have like 2 games from windows store ) and while I don't play a ton of triple A games I know playing that on linux is very hard to do. And another thing is that i hear that Nvidia dosen't work as well as amd gpu in linux (works good but open cl is better supported on radeon...or so im told)
For me windows (especially 10) is a buggy, crashing, hair-pulling experience that frustrates me to no end and I wish i could jump ship but a lot of my productivity apps aren't even on linux not to mention emulators...

Dual boot bruh. Use Windows for gaming and a Linux distro for just about everything else. I'm in a similar boat, though I've never really felt too "caged" by Windows until recently, with their change to a "the user is the product" business model. Steam's Proton is at about 80% compatibility for games, so that's not bad, and they're definitely gonna be driving that number up even further ahead of Deck's launch.

While the exact same apps often aren't available for Linux, it almost always has some equivalents that are.

i am dual booted, but i to A LOT of multitasking, while im rendering im probably playing a game as well or working on another project. i need to be able to go back and forth on the fly. and even though i have great specs virtual machines are not dynamic, once you lock in how much ram and cpu you want to use it will LOCK that off from the host until you close the VM.

Yeah I suppose that's part of why Steam Deck is so brilliant, you can have a dedicated Linux PC for $400 to run separate tasks parallel your desktop. It'll allow a lot more people to familiarize themselves with Linux and encourage developers to provide more options for user-friendly productivity and entertainment apps.

the thing they didnt say about the steam deck is that it will NOT support your entire game library. so dont expect to play those windows only games on it unless you install windows on that thing

Proton has 80% compatibility as I said before, and I won't be surprised if it's pushing 90% by the time Steam Deck is actually in consumers' hands.

@Xzi @xdarkmario With Windows 11's new secure boot requirement*, dual booting some Linux distros alongside Windows might become more difficult, and depending on your current setup, it might require some reconfiguration.

*currently bypassable

Most of the instability in Windows is due to your motherboard firmware and your installed drivers. If you have 16GB+ of RAM and an NVMe drive, you can usually disable your pagefile too, to prevent yourself getting "pagefault" BSODs. I use Snappy Driver Installer Origin, and it installs not necessarily the *newest* drivers, but the most stable and well-optimized ones. And the only BSOD I've gotten was from using an old version of SoftPerfect RAMdisk, and that was on me. (Keep your GPU drivers updated though, highly recommended)

With Windows 11's strict new system requirements, it's more likely the one excluding you.

yea i already disabled page filing, no need for it as i have 32gb and 2tb nvme. my issues are randomly crashing apps and freezes and flickering screens. but to be fair i have been through 3 motherboards, 2 CPUS WITHOUT fresh installing, only driver wiping :rofl2:

That definitely sounds like a nightmare, lol. I also use Ccleaner's registry cleaner a few times after uninstalling a few apps, to help keep things tidy and uncluttered.

Nah I'm sure my desktop would be compatible, just upgraded the motherboard January. But just because someone offers me a free VIP pass to a nightclub that plays exclusively country music, that doesn't mean I'm gonna go. :P

Literally what Valve did lol.
